Very well captured!

For a brief moment, I thought that they had added a model of the Stature of liberty to her bow!

The Norwegian "Epic,'' claimed to be the largest ship to ever dock in New York, arrived for inaugural celebration this morning.

The massive ship docked at Pier 88 in Manhattan around 10:30 a.m.

A spokeswoman for the line tells USA TODAY the giant, 4,100-passenger vessel is going to have to drop some of its lifeboats when it arrives in the Hudson River in order to fit comfortably into its assigned dock space.

Music super stars Justin Bieber, Enrique Iglesias and LeAnn Rimes will perform on the ship for NBC's live broadcast from 9-10 p.m. EST of the Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks over the Hudson River. The show will be hosted by Nick Cannon from ABC's "America's Got Talent," and Alison Sweeney from NBC's "The Biggest Loser."

Bigger than all but a handful of Royal Caribbean ships, Epic is more than 60% larger than the largest Norwegian Cruise Line ship currently at sea.

Of course that's wrong. Queen Mary 2 has dimenions of 1,132' x 135 while Norwegian Epic is "only" 1,120' x 125

Of course Epic carries 4,200 on 153,000 gross tons (PSA 36.4) and Queen Mary 2 2,620 on 148.528 tons (PSA 56.7) so Epic is certainly a much more crowded ship.

It depends how you measure a ships 'size'.

Gross tonnage is the 'standard'. However I assume NCL mean the ship with the biggest passenger capcaity? Would that not be true or does the Freedom class beat Epic? (Oasis never stopped at NY, did she?)

The Oasis Class is 1st followed by the Freedom Class and then the Epic.

I'm not sure that line about the Epic being the largest to dock in Manhattan is true. I am 99% sure that when the Liberty of the Seas was in Cape Liberty for her pre-innaugurals and naming she took an empty trip up the river to spend an afternoon in Manhattan to allow people on the ship for tours directly from NYC. I think there may have also been another ship in Cape Liberty at that time which may have been part of the reasoning. I've been googling but can't seem to find any kind of schedule from her pre-inaugurals so maybe someone else on here will be able to verify that.

Edit: Found it! The Freedom of the Seas broadcast The Today Show live on May 12, 2006. She then returned to Cape Liberty to unload the TV gear and then left for Manhattan. On May 13, 2006 the ship was then open to the public in Manhattan Cruise Port for people to go onboard and explore. At 4PM she then left to go back to Cape Liberty.

Not the best shot, but here is Freedom of the Seas at the PST in Manhattan.

Here is a question, do we know for sure that the Epic measured in at 153,000gt? I mean Freedom class is only 154,407gt. So Maybe Epic sneaks a little above her?

No. OASIS is the largest no matter how you want to measure. GT, length, height, width, capacity, etc.

Now in terms of the largest passenger ship to visit NY based on GT, it appears EPIC is the winner if in fact her official measurement is 155,873 gt.

As far as physical dimensions go, QM2 is both longer and wider than EPIC. I'm not sure about height though. I can't imagine EPIC is any higher as QM2 was built to a maximum height to pass under the Verrazano Bridge. OASIS is actually a bit higher if her funnel piping is extended.

Pretty amazing how the number of decks with verandah stateroom keeps increasing. Ten years ago, new ships had verandah decks 3 - 4 high, Freedom class has 5 decks with verandahs. Epic has NINE!

Ships have grown taller much faster than they've grown in length or beam.

Yup. QM2 has 8 decks of balconies and OASIS has nine (including the Loft Suites).

As a kid I frequented the same finger piers in NY that EPIC is docked at. The big ships were OCEANIC, ROTTERDAM V, and CANBERRA. I remember thinking they were huge! The fact is they only towered over the pier by a couple decks. QE2 was a bit higher but I didn't see her as often, and to be honest she was not a favorite. If you look at EPIC, FREEDOM, and QM2 it's amazing how much taller they are than the pier.

THe thing that amazes me about those verandas is that while 8 to 9 in 6 years doesn't sound like a lot the Oasis did it with all 9 decks above the promenade. Image how many they would have if they used hull cabins like the QM2 and Epic. How low are they able to go with those?
