I have known this piece of trivia for a while now, but having recently seen the movie again it reminded me about it.

A P&O ship has actually featured in a James Bond movie. It can clearly be identified by panning shots of its horn blasting on the funnel, the promenade deck farewell party and the ships lower windows.

There is also a fight scene obviously involving James Bond where you get a glimpse of a life ring stating the ships name.

I am just curious if there is anyone else on here who knows what ship it is and what movie and how well known it was that this cruise ship was in a James Bond movie.

I guess 'everyone' interested in passengers ships knows about the short appearance of Canberra in 'Diamonds are Forever'. However, I doubt that anyone cares or knows about that beyond this group of people.

In Quantum of Solace an MSC ship can be seen behind the boat chase. It was filmed at Colon, Panama. If memory serves correctly the ship is Lirica.

And no, probably no one else cares, but I'm a big Bond fan and a ship geek :-)

There is another Sean Connery film, a non-Broccoli Bond one, with Klaus Maria Brandauer. It has some great waterfront scenes of Nassau with several ships: Rotterdam V among them.

The Rotterdam 5 is appearing in a James Bond movie late 1960's early 1970's. Sean Connery was still 007. The Rotterdam was steaming up a channel.

They also used the burned out and partially sunk QE in Hong Kong harbor.

Greetings Ben.

Diamonds are Forever was on tv here last night. I always knew it was the Canberra that the final fight was filmed on. It was the first time I caught a glimpse of a lifering with the ships name - a sign of how good large plasmas are.

The only thing about that film that confused me was the where that final scene was shot. I always suspected it had to be the Captains balcony or in that large area below the bridge. However the film crews went to the extent of putting a WW initialed sign on the glass doors which was unique to the film and would not have been on the ship.

Very likely in a studio and not aboard Canberra.

I do not remember her to be in a 1960ies or 1970ies Bond movie but as NAL said, one can see her in 'Never say never' (I am pretty sure about that - BTW - Is that a Bond movie?). Amerikanis in Costa livery is also in that film.

Yes, as Ernst said, Amerikanis in Costa livery is also in the film. Costa had chartered her from Chandris Cruises for a time. In the first Bond film, Dr. No, there is an old liner visible.....perhaps the Evangeline or one of her fleet mates.

Ernst: The last Sean Connery Bond film is Never Say Never Again. It is not in the official series and is a poor, plodding and pointless remake of Thunderball.

The shots in You Only Live Twice in the QE struck me as being very sad - Even as a young lad, long before, my interest in ships, and before i knew which ship it was. To see such a fine old lady in such a condition was distressing.

That's what I meant but I guess one can still call it a Bond movie.

I've watched "Never Say Never Again," several times up to the point of the ships. After that I turn it off. It is such a poor Bond film and doesn't even have the Bond music as we know it.

I havent seen Never Say Never Again for a while. It was the battle of the Bonds at the same time as Octopussy. Persobally my least favourite is Die Another Day.

Has everyone heard of the new Titanic 2 movie? Rather far fetched story isnt it having a tsunami through an iceberg at it. What is it a cross between Posieden?

You know what would make an interesting debate. Could Titanic have been saved?

I have always wondered if there were any tactics they could have done such as counterflooding, ditching cargo/anchor and chains or opening the watertight doors to level the ship and then reclose them, would have slowed its sinking or kept it afloat.

Yes this was the movie, I wonder why I think it was a bond movie. It have to do with Sean Connery.

Rotterdam 5, appeared in a Black Emanuele movie. Scene was shot in Hong Kong harbor and the Rotterdam was fore short in the back ground.

Greetings Ben.

It was a Bond movie; just not an "official" Bond movie.

The "official" Bond movies are those made by EON productions, of which there are now 22. "Bond 23" has unfortunately been shelved indefinitely because of MGM's financial difficulties.

There have been two non-EON Bond movies: the first Casino Royale (a spoof starring David Niven as Bond), and Never Say Never Again with Sean Connery. I think that means that Connery can count seven Bond movies alongside Roger Moore's seven, although all of Moore's were "official" EON movies.

I think that the rights to use the Monty Norman/John Barry "Bond music" must belong to EON. I can't imagine them allowing any non-EON Bond movies to take that part of their branding.

Thanks fore you're information. I really did not know there are official and non official bond movies after Casino Royal David Niven version. Interesting.

The Rotterdam (6) played a leading role in the Dutch movie "Vriendschap (friendship)" A very good movie with a all star cast of the best Dutch actors. Very nice the movie was shot in Rotterdam and a/b MS Rotterdam.

Greetings Ben.
