Was looking through some old magazines I happened to have packed and moved with me to WV and ran across some interesting old advertisements from 22 years ago:

I agree! I have seen all these ads before and they sure bring back memories.

It's unfortunate five of the companies are no longer with us.

It's also refreshing to think they were all separate companies, and not "brands" of Carnival Corp. or RCCL.

Back then you didn't read about brawls or gang style graffiti on ships either. A different class of people I suppose? I never thought I would read about LA gang graffiti etched into elevator walls, or a brawl that resulted in 10 people being disembarked from the ship, but I have read about both just this week, and both took place on Carnival. News like this certainly doesn't entice me to run out and book a Carnival cruise. I deal with this behavior on land, and I sure don't want to deal with it on vacation. It seems the mass-market cruise industry is getting trashier and trashier, and if it keeps up I will need to review my options. I wonder how many security officers Carnival has on any given ship? I recall the days were a team of security personnel were not required, or even imagined. There are certainly some downsides to opening up the cruise industry to the masses (there are upsides too), and they are dealing with some of the same issues that the airline industry has been dealing with for years now.

Wonderful ads!

It just shows you have fragile the cruise industry is with many of the lines no longer existing - not to mention some of the ships!

I find it hard to believe that Concord could get to NY in three hours from London and now we are back to it taking 6-7 hours. It's pretty rare for progress to turn back-wards.

Thank you for posting those. I remember collecting some of those out of old National Geographic's. I also found an old ad from cunard featuring the QM and QE! I also found an old Canadial Pacific, pre Ted Arison days.

This ad brings back so many happy memories. I know I am getting old as it seems like only a few years ago that the beautiful Indy and Connie were sailing the Hawaiian islands.

Ever wonder when political correctness really began to take hold? Well, judging by this 1969 Prudential Grace Line brochure it was sometime after then.

What's really incredible about the price of cruises is that most of those fares from 22-years ago are 1/2 that amount today!

Instead of going up 2-3 times w/inflation, those prices (like airfares) have come down by 50%! That is generally a good thing but as seen w/the quality of some of today's passengers-not such a good thing.

Wow, I joined Royal Princess on May 14th 1988 in San Juan. We sailed to LA and on to Vancouver and Alaska.

Yep cruising has definitely gone cheaper but at what price??

I think what's even more impressive than the relatively very high prices being paid in 1988 is the fact that for the most part the ships back then were considerably smaller than today's average cruise ship, there was significantly less 'stuff' to keep passengers 'entertained' and 'dined 24/7, and yet with the then new 'wow' factors of Sovereign of the Seas and the giant Norway being around it didn't keep people from being just as happy on those 'tiny' 21,000-35,000grt ships.

Well, there is of course no correlation between the size of the ship and the 'quality' of the cruise experience. Actually, most 'luxury' vessels today are in the size range you mentioned. Also, if we compare to prices for a cruise aboard a contemporary 'luxury' cruise ship with the prices for Royal Viking, Sea Godess or NAC posted above one (sadly) comes to the conclusion that not much has changed (considering inflation).

Exactly my point! But it would seem the new generation of cruisers today do need all the 'innovations' and 24/7 stimulation and would otherwise be bored to tears if they had to spend a week on the much smaller ships from that time period.

I looked up a cruise my grandmother took me on back in the summer of 1977. It was a 13-day Alaska cruise roundtrip from L.A. on the ss Mariposa. The minimum fare was $728.00 per person for an inside cabin. I remember that my fare was somewhere around $1,500.00.

The average cruise passenger of today would have been incredibly bored on that 300-passenger ship for 13-days.

Comparing prices from 1977 to today: A top-of-the-line Cadillac Eldorado was priced around $13,000 and a nice 3-bedroom/3-bath home in a desirable part of L.A. sold for around $200,000.00. A comparable Cadillac today sells for 60k and that house would go for between $1.5 million to 2 million.

Wow thanks for posting those, I remember so many of them, looking at the prices as many have said, it's kind of a shock, except Alaska which is pretty much the same (just in todays $$$)

Did you ever fly the Concorde ?
I found it small and uncomfortable, I was lucky enough to fly LHR - JFK on the Concorde, but switched to BA first for the flight back, though it took longer it was a far better flight.

The same goes for Song of America, I remember my father calling our house just as she passed Calshot and raving about all the stuff there was to do onboard.

What really shocked me was the price NCL was getting for cruises on the Skyward etc, that really is shocking.

80% of the problems are caused by 20% of the people. Cruiselines should do criminal background checks and those with a record within 7 years denied booking. This way the poorer people who are not aszholz can enjoy a non-budget busting vacation.
