it's been a long time already when I put together this history. I should start to work on an update :-)
Here in the States, we dabbled in hydrofoil tech on Pegasus-class Navy ships from the Cold War, the butt-ugly Boeing Jetfoil, and personal sailing cats. The French Hydroptére is an amazing engineering feat.
The Soviets, on the other hand, have already made hydrofoil tech commercially viable for scheduled fast ferry service 50 years ago-- so viable, in fact, that old Meteors are in demand and in service all around the Eastern Hemisphere!

If transat air travel devolves to the point where the express greyhound ocean liner makes a comeback, the new liners will probably resemble a scaled-up Meteor (or its coastal seagoing cousin the Kometa) much more than it would the QM2.
