We all have heard that MSC has been trying to sell Melody for a while, I understand that she will be sailing her last season (alongside Sinfonia) in SA from next month and has been sold to Thomsons ! Not sure that is a big plus for Thomsons though as she is pretty well knackered - a plus is her toilets do seem to work.

We will then probably then get Sinfonia and Armonia next year.

I don't think Thomson owns any ships outright apart from the ISLAND ESCAPE. Likely the MELODY will be sold to Louis cruises (or other Greeks/Cypriots) and then chartered out to Thomson.

If it is true it would be funny that they have the Atlantic and the Homeric.... the Nieuw Amsterdam and the Noordam.

Thomson will be cornering the market on on early 1980s cruise ships!

If feel another BBC Watchdog program coming on

A couple of weeks ago the dream was trashed in a BBC consumers program. Sewage and air conditioning problems. Thompson marketed it as their "newest" ship in the UK. Needles to say she wasn't that new.

During her Home Lines days she was considered to have nice, large cabins. She even had a good number of single cabins. Home Lines still used the odd layout of placing the dining room on a low deck. In fact they did this on the Homeric which was newer yet. It's odd because most of the ships built in the 70's had dining rooms high up. Go figure. She was built as a replacement for the Doric, but oddly, many of the Home Lines regulars preferred the Doric.

And SONG OF AMERICA, and SCANDINAVIA! Clearly someone at Thomson has a thing for ships of this era.

My late husband and I sailed her when she was the ATLANTIC with Premier Cruise Line and visited her when she was new with Home Lines. Yes, the rooms are nice and spacious. I particularly enjoyed one her of lounges: Blue Ribbon Pub.
It has black and white photos of all the ships that won the Hales Trophy, a beautiful white piano..just a beautiful atmosphere. When you walk into the lounge, it's as though you're going back in time and really seeing these beauties afloat again.

I don't think is is to much a "thing" for ships of this era as they are what are available for the discount operators.

Just like Commodore surviving of 1950s vintage ships and Premier's rag tag fleet .... this class of operators survives on the hand me downs of others.

What I think is kind of interesting is that they are reassembling the fleets of others, i.e. Home Lines and Holland America.

At least Thomson was smart enough not to go near the Atlantic Star ex. Fairsky with all of her problems and high cost of operations. Wonder if Thomson looked at the Norwegian leftovers or if Star is still trying to get top dollar for those ships?

I agree with the poster who suggested what will eventually come to surface is that Louis or someone like that bought the Melody and is chartering it to Thomson. Or maybe MSC kept ownership and chartered it because MSC wanted it out of the fleet and this might be a good financial solution.

I also cruised on this ship at the Atlantic for Premier. It was a long time ago but I do remember the cabins being a nice size.

I know. I was joking, hence the " ".

Yes, seems they will be reassembling the whole Home Lines fleet of 1986-1989, and also the whole HAL fleet of 1989-1993 (or really 1983-1993, just with ships added along the way), minus a certain ship that is now a hotel in Rotterdam of course.

I'm sure Thomson looked at them, since Louis contracted to buy both MAJESTY and DREAM, even though it only wound up with the former. At the time the rumor was that DREAM would be chartered to Thomson but of course Louis backed out citing technical problems with the ship. I wonder if the name of Thomson's "newest" ship is a clue there.

Any more news on whether the former Atlantic will be joining her former Homeric sister with Thomson?

MSC told me as of a few weeks ago the ship was still for sale and no deal had been done with Thomson or anyone else for that fact. They said they will continue to run her as she is a good ship but longer-term she will be sold because she simply does not match the rest of the fleet.
