No images yet but at 135,000grt and a little over 1000ft long, I think MSC Fantasia class.

Since Daewoo builds some of MSC's huge container ships, it's probably safe to assume they've been talking cruise ships.

If this ship is for the North American Market, I wonder if it will be re-badged as a Chevrolet?

It may share some similarities, but I think it will be a different class of ship. The MSC Fantasia Class is not SOLAS "Safe Return to Port" compliant, and this went into effect for all ships ordered after July 1, 2010.

A senior MSC executive went on record as saying they could spend the money to enhance the MSC Fantasia Class and make it compliant, but they decided it's not worth the cost and will instead concentrate on a new design.

eroller, could you explain what this means "The MSC Fantasia Class is not SOLAS "Safe Return to Port" compliant"? She is so new, how she isn't SOLAS aproved?

Thank You

There are new regulations. Newly built ships have to comply but these rules will not be applied to non compliant vessels built before 1st of July 2010 - and yes, even some very recently built ships do not comply with these new regulations (but do not have to). This is one of the reasons why some designs will be discontinued.

Short 'abstract' by Germanischer Lloyd on 'Safe Return to Port'

Most of the new ships sailing today are not SOLAS Safe Return to Port compliant. I believe the Solstice Class, Oasis Class, and CARNIVAL DREAM and her future sisters are compliant. I'm not sure about DISNEY DREAM but I would imagine she is as well.

It's fine that ships ordered before July 1 are not compliant, as they are exempt from the regulation. It's only ships ordered after July 1, 2010 that must meet the new requirement.

I don't know what implications it has as far as ship design go, but I think they are fairly significant. The basic premise is that the ship itself is it's own best lifeboat, and the best chance for survival is if the ship can safely return to port. This has become especially important as ships get bigger and bigger.

Some speculate that had CARNIVAL SPLENDOR met these new SOLAS requirements, she could have returned to port under her own power.

Thank you Ernst and eroller!

I could understand now what does it means. Last month i could not believe that a cruise ship so new (and safe?) as Carnival Splendour could lost all power just after a switchboard fire! It was a real mess for something not too serious (at least that was John Healds seems to say). Maybe with this new SOLAS requirements may prevent this happens again, well, at least stay a drift for 4 days or more ...
