Just saw this post on Steamboats.org...Has any one heard if the Empress of the North may have been sold to Asian group as a Gambling boat?....... If this is true it would seem MARAD could be doing its part to help out with Asia's unemployment problems as its doutful even 1 Amerian job will be created......And meanwhile MARAD guaranteed the 55 million in loans it took to build the Empress of the North back in 2003......Since both companies that owned her returened her to MARAD due to loan default....The US taxpayer may have just got wacked again .....Thank you President Obama (he appointed the MARAD Admistator)..........I hope this is all not true and the Empress of the North will sail again with an American crew to American ports like Alaska & the Columbia river.
Can any one shed light on the Empess of the North sale?

I haven't heard anything, though honestly, she is not a ship I followed closely, with all the groundings she is a ship that just held no interest to me.

Let me do some digging and see what I can come up with.

An AMERICAN EMPRESS
Posted on Sunday, May 19, 2013 by Peter Knego

quote:
Memphis-based American Queen Steamboat Company is on the verge of announcing its acquisition of the laid up EMPRESS OF THE NORTH for Columbia River and Alaskan cruise service. The 2002-built, 223-passenger EMPRESS OF THE NORTH was withdrawn from service in 2008 following the collapse of her last owners, Majestic America Line and remains under the stewardship of the U.S. Maritime Administration at Portland, Oregon.

A 2014 sailing schedule for the vessel, which will be renamed AMERICAN EMPRESS, is slated for release on Tuesday, May 21. Meanwhile, American Queen officials are still working to secure the complete financing and acquisition of the AMERICAN EMPRESS.

American Queen currently operates the 436-passenger AMERICAN QUEEN, the largest, most lavish steamboat ever built, on the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee Rivers.

definitely not a rumor as plans were well along when I departed Memphis to head back home to Fort Lauderdale. I believe the principals are in NY and will make the announcement at a press lunch. Glad to see the project name I gave her has stuck.

Well, I guess if we can have an American queen we can also have an American empress.
