Below is a link to the violations. There's some pretty gross and sad stuff in there....such as human hair in the ice machine.

If it makes anyone feel better most land restaurants would score about 70.

Not in Nevada, I am just up to the "Other-Port Deck Storage" part, I can tell you, at that point the restaurant would already of been shut down.

Knowing how seriously cruise lines take these ratings and how the CDC scores them, I am actually amazed they managed to get an 84.

I agree 100%. These days it's actually quite rare for a modern ship to fail this inspection. Far more common is for a ship to score 100%. Years ago it was more common to see a ship fail, but that was because the ships were a lot older and the galleys outdated. These days the cruise lines work with the CDC even during construction to ensure the galleys are up to the latest standards. Of course this only goes so far if the crew is not following procedures or if there is poor management.

Any other ship failing would probably not make headlines, but this is QM2. The publicity works both ways. All the more reason Cunard should have been on top of his.

She is an old ship. Doesn't surprise me. Years ago when we had a lot of older ships cruising, it was much more common for a ship to fail the inspection. Not so much anymore.

Havig just come of the QM2 on the 24th, I would have to say she was in need of some TLC in some of the areas that have never been touched. Little things that caught my eye: tattered bedspreads, carpets straining at their seams, mold on the ceilings of the spa of the canyon ranch, mismatched tiles, chipped corners here and there. I hope that they fix all this in her next dry dock. She is a special ship and should be taken care of properly.

I had a wonderful voyage and love the ship. Kudos to Cunard for booting out that awful art auction company!

Glad you enjoyed QM2. I noticed many of the same things you did last April. Most of the public areas looked good, but the cabin needed help. Worn carpet that had no pile left, threadbare bedspreads, an old TV, and a mattress that sagged.

By the pool in Canyon Ranch, the signature sculpture had been removed and placed to the side. The wood stand it sat on was completely rotted and covered in mold. I assume they were building a new stand, but it wasn't completed during my cruise.

Like you I love QM2, and she deserves better than to be failing health inspections and becoming more tattered than what is acceptable for a ship of this stature.

I'm glad the art auctions are gone. Are they still setting up the bargain basement gift shop tables in the atrium and grand corridor? Hate that, but judging by the numbers of people buying I don't think they are going away.

I'm booked on QM2 in January, after her refit. I'm hoping it will be comprehensive and QM2 will receive the attention she deserves.

While I have not sailed on QM2, I have been on 43 cruises on many various ships and many cruise lines. In all that time, the only "dirty" ship was QE2. Most of the soft furnishings were very worn and stained. Cabin was full of chips on almost everything. The mold on the bath tub tiles was there on boarding, and there when I left. The shower curtain was disgusting. The "dust bunnies" under the bed had been there so long, they had many many grandchildren!! I enjoyed my crossing, but have reservations about sailing with Cunard again.

My first cabin on QE2 was pretty dirty. Just like you a lot of dust and mold, plus we had moths and virtually no a/c. It sucked. Thankfully it got better from there on future cruises, but I don't think QE2 was ever a 'spotless' ship. Part of
that was probably her age.

Part of QE2's charm was the worn bits here and there. I had a crew stateroom - a single's stateroom when I worked on QE2 and loved the little cabin. There were some worn parts but it had such "character" and I was so thrilled to just be on the ship that I overlooked the little issues. There's no excuse for QM2 having these worn-out issues so early in her career.

My guess is that Cunard/Carnival Corp will infuse quite a bit of money into QM2's soft furnishings and cleanliness efforts to squelch the bad press, which will be a bit hard to overcome considering she is THE Queen Mary 2. I also believe that the hammer will come down hard on someone onboard QM2 and that someone will lose their job over this. By time you board her in November this will all be a bad memory for the folks at Cunard.

The hotel director was some guy that has been with Cunard for over 30 years (they kept metioning it). I don't think he could see all that was getting old on the ship. I asked around and it seemed that the dry dock was mostly cosmetic, carpets, cleaning, etc...nothing major

I wonder how much fault lies with those tight a--d bean counter accountants that are emplyed with these cruise lines who are trying to save money at the expense of a decent ship?

It could all be down to management and ships staff powerless to change things.

In my opinion if it is a high class cruise ship selling expensive cruises then they ought to replace worn and wasted furniture and equipment.

Also the fail of cleaning standards could have allot to do with the number of staff employed and the work demand on them. If for example Cunard has pulled staff from the ship to save money and standards dropped as a result then there is no excuse for that.

If you want good quality work then you need good quality crew who are able to do it and are not over worked.

Refit and drydocking to refurbish a cruise ship is on a timetable. Not sure on what that is as far as years?
On our last cruise aboard the Grand Princess one could easily see the areas that really needed to be fixed. It went into a long drydock a few weeks later.
If you followed the Princess pages on the GP drydock ,they just about gutted the ship and replaced the majority of furnishing and venues too.
I heard it cost $26M.
I guess one could check on two things before selecting a ship for your cruise. No.1--- Age, and No.2 last time the ship had a major refit.
We did this for our Westerdam cruise to Alaska in Sept.
I recall seeing somewhere that ships get awards from the parent company for outstanding up keep of their vessel.

Can I ask about the quality of the materials used to construct QM2? Would that not be a factor in such early wear and tear?

Did the older ships last longer, really? Or do we just say that they did?

Cockroaches and fruit flies which were found on QM 2 are not what I would call wear and tear.

This speaks of lack of cleaning in the food service areas which may be due to crew being tired and having to work too long a hours or a lack of supervision by those in charge.

Using cheap concessionaire labour on cruise ships is asking for trouble !

All crew should be employed on a proper monthly wage and not be expected to rely on graturities to make up a low wage paid by the shipping company.

One would think that the hotel housekeeping, bar staff, and dining room/buffet personel get to share the gratuities????? Ship operational crews should be salaried??
Anyone have any insight on this????
