Hurtigruten's NORDLYS caught fire this morning in the engine room just off Ålesund. Reports say 2 people were injured. Passengers have been evacuated by lifeboat although she is now alongside as the fire is still alight and copious amounts of smoke pouring out. Some of the photos look awful and I hope it is not as bad as it looks.

Reports with pictures here and here, there are many more. A video clip.

It is now being reported that 2 people have died, found by the fire crew 1 in the engine room. It was previously said that 4 people were missing, maybe 2 now.

It's been reported the two who died are crew. One was found around the engine room and one in another part of the ship. The smoke must have been sufficating. Very tragic news, once again big headlines here in Norway for the wrong reasons

Some news say that the smoke is now spreading all over the town of Ålesund and parts of the town centre has been evacuated because of toxic smoke and the situation on board the ship is still not clear..

There are some good photos here. [UK press coverage is poor. NCL should complain about this header and then we have 'a cruise liner carrying 200 went up in flames'. Only Capt Greybeard is worth reading].

Norwegian reports say she is now listing at 10degrees with all the water and they are addressing this. The fire is under control, but not out yet.

This is rather spectacular...long time there was such a bad accident, and this (perhaps luckily) in coastal waters. There are some reminiscences with "Prinsendam".

I may be wrong, but it seems that "Hurtigrute" is getting a dangerous reputation...

Hutigruten has an excellent track record...this is a very odd anomaly. These ships are run with such precision, so it must have been a very unexpected issue. It's sad to see this happen to a ship that is run so well.

She is atm listing 19,7. They are talking about 20 as the critical point for capsizing. Too close to that point that I think they are able to save her. Think the next hour will be critical.

I am sure Google's Norwegian Translation does not give the right meaning at times, but it appears she went over the critical point to 21.7 [or 22 depending on which report one reads] but that now they have managed to seal a fair number of leaks and she is coming back slowly, also with the help of a floating crane

The German (official) Hurtigruten webpage reports that Nordlys is in a stable condition for now and that it will be decided within the next few hours whether the luggage of the passengers can be retrieved.

Interview with the Captain (video in Norwegian)

A translation or summary of the interview would be highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

Another (Norwegian) article with some pictures.

It has also been confirmed by now that the two deceased are the chief engineer and an apprentice who has not even finished his first trip - see e.g. this article.

Condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

I interviewed the Hotel director that is seen in these videos. I never did meet the engineer, but did interview the Captain, which isn't the same Captain that was master of the ship when it had it's fire. Sad to see this happen. Such good people running the ship. I hope to see the results of of the cause, because I doubt it's human error.

Frankly, I do not think that it is appropriate to jump to such conclusions in a public forum at this time.

There is no reason to publicly come to conclusions based on (recent) incidents with Hurtigruten ships or the impression one had when aboard - be it good or bad.

Giving that two people died and that several were injured it's probably more adequate to wait for the results of the official investigation before making accusing or exaggerated absolving comments in a public forum.

News from Norway has said that the Chief Engineer and an 18 year old apprentice, on his first voyage at sea, are the two crew members who died.

My thoughts are with their families and friends.
