DESTINY TO UNDERGO DRAMATIC TRANSFORMATION

DURING MASSIVE $155 MILLION REFIT IN EARLY 2013

Ship to be Renamed Carnival Sunshine and Operate Mediterranean Itineraries from April to October 2013 Followed by Launch of Year-Round Service from New Orleans

MIAMI (March 6, 2012) – Representing Carnival Cruise Lines’ most ambitious refit and transformation project ever, Carnival Destiny will undergo a $155 million makeover next year that will incorporate all of the line’s “Fun Ship 2.0” dining, bar and entertainment features, as well as a variety of exciting innovations unique to this vessel.

The refit will also include a reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck and the expansion of two other decks within the forward section of the ship, providing the opportunity to incorporate a number of new and exciting on-board spaces. One-hundred and eighty-two cabins will be added, as well.

The redesign will be so extensive and wide-ranging that the ship will be renamed Carnival Sunshine following the 49-day dry dock, which will take place from February to April 2013. The refit work will be completed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri.

Following the dry dock, Carnival Sunshine will embark on a schedule of nine- and 12-day Mediterranean voyages from Barcelona and Venice from April to October 2013 then launch year-round seven-day Caribbean departures from New Orleans beginning November 2013.

“This is our most ambitious ship conversion project to date and it will radically transform the Carnival Destiny into essentially an entirely new ship offering a variety of exciting dining and beverage choices, spectacular outdoor spaces and entertainment options, and on-board innovations not available anywhere else,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO.

Here’s a look at some of Carnival Sunshine’s many features:

Wide-Ranging On-Board Dining Choices

Guy’s Burger Joint, a free-of-charge poolside venue developed in partnership with Food Network personality Guy Fieri serving hand-crafted burgers and fresh-cut fries in an atmosphere that celebrates the chef’s California roots and love of car culture

BlueIguana Cantina, a complimentary poolside Mexican eatery where guests can enjoy authentic, freshly made burritos and tacos on homemade tortillas that can be personalized with a variety of salsas and toppings

Fahrenheit 555, a classic American steakhouse offering mouth-watering steaks and gourmet appetizers, entrees and desserts, all enhanced by understated ambiance and impeccable service (venue will carry a surcharge consistent with other steakhouses in the Carnival fleet)

Cucina del Capitano – or “The Captain’s Kitchen” – with Italian favorites and new Carnival classics served family-style in a fun and engaging atmosphere reminiscent of a cozy Italian home (during the day, the venue will serve as a free casual lunch-time pasta bar with a nominal charge for dinner)

A stunning new full-service Asian restaurant inspired by the line’s popular Mongolian wok casual eateries that will feature an extensive menu of delicious favorites from the Far East, along with a striking Asian-themed décor (no charge for lunch with a nominal fee for dinner)

An expansive casual poolside eatery, Lido Marketplace, offering a seemingly endless array of delectable favorites from around the world, from paninis and pizza to a deli offering piled-high sandwiches and just about everything in between

A new casual dining option, “The Comfort Kitchen,” located within the Lido Marketplace and offering a tempting array of American-style “comfort food” entrees and side dishes

Completely renovated main dining rooms that will offer extensive menus and wine lists, with a tantalizing selection of salads, appetizers, entrees and desserts nightly, including Carnival’s legendary chocolate melting cake

A newly designed coffee bar, serving a wide range of sweet and frothy concoctions such as cappuccinos, lattes, espressos and other caffeinated favorites, along with delicious pastries and other decadent confections

Innovative Bar and Beverage Concepts

Alchemy Bar, a vintage-themed cocktail “pharmacy” that’s the go-to spot for guests seeking a unique experience with mixologists who “prescribe” concoctions from different elixirs and ingredients or guests’ own custom-created cocktails

The Library Bar, a warm and cozy venue offering full bar service for those seeking a more intimate spot for before- or after-dinner drinks

An exciting new lounge, Havana Bar, a tropical-inspired nightspot located aft within Lido Marketplace featuring a panoramic ocean view from its floor to ceiling windows and offering a unique and memorable venue for cocktails, live Latin music and dancing

The new Sunshine Bar, an elegant lounge with sun-splashed interiors located at the lobby level of the ship’s towering atrium where guests can enjoy a cocktail, dance and listen to live music

A new cigar bar concept, with plush, comfortable surroundings, along with fine cigars and a variety of brandies, cognacs and liqueurs, ideal for pre- or post-dinner drinks and conversation

Outdoor Fun and Relaxation

Hasbro, The Game Show, where guests are part of the show through a series of larger-than-life productions and entertainment activities based on the company’s iconic and popular games and presented in the ship’s remodeled main show lounge

Piano Bar 88, a new twist on Carnival’s popular piano bar concept that will amp up the excitement with themed nights, an engaging new décor and opportunities for spontaneous sing-along fun

The Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez, featuring a hilarious line-up of both established and up-and-coming talent evaluated and vetted by the popular TV personality who serves as Carnival’s “curator of comedy”

The Punchliner Comedy Brunch, for those who want a little merriment in the morning, serving up laughter along with delicious cuisine

Staterooms, Shopping and More

All staterooms will be fully revamped and feature a new tropical décor that pays homage to the ship’s Caribbean itineraries with a combination of bright colors and soothing pastels, with 182 new staterooms to be added across a broad range of accommodations from interior to balconies, including 96 new spa staterooms

The ship will then operate a series of 18 nine- and 12-day Mediterranean cruises either round-trip from Barcelona or sailing between Barcelona and Venice. These departures will visit a wide variety of the Mediterranean’s most spectacular ports, including Marseilles, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Livorno (Pisa/Florence) and Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy; and Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Carnival Sunshine will then sail on a 16-day trans-Atlantic crossing departing Barcelona Nov. 1 and arriving New Orleans Nov. 17, 2013, positioning the vessel for its year-round deployment from the Big Easy.

So Carnival is taking an already crowded ship and making it even more crowded? I sailed on this ship just after she entered service. It was crowded then and I can only imagine how it will be after adding another 400+ passengers.

I noticed that they are taking the aft of deck five and adding about fifty cabins there. That was originally lounges. Also the upper level of the foward dining room is now going to be reconfigured into specialty dining.

Also interesting that Carnival renames this ship Carnival Sunshine after RCI announced the Sunshine class to be built.

After looking at the deck plans, I don't see anything but a more crowded ship. Some of the additions sound really nice but not if I have to fight for more space on board.

By looking at the old Destiny deck plans verses the new Sunshine deck plans, they are adding cabins to deck three forward where part of the show lounge was originally placed. Show lounge is now only showing on two decks in place of three.

Why even the need to change the name at all? And I hate the name. It's really stupid.

Why not Carnival NeoDestiny or something else pathetically original?

Never mind the name of the ship, this is the part that caught my eye:

quote:
Fahrenheit 555, a classic American steakhouse offering mouth-watering steaks and gourmet appetizers, entrees and desserts, all enhanced by understated ambiance and impeccable service (venue will carry a surcharge consistent with other steakhouses in the Carnival fleet)
Are they comparing cooking steaks to book burning? Or has no one at Carnival heard of Fahrenheit 451?!

I looked them over. They improved the fore-aft circulation except for deck 3 with the galley in the way, yet disimproved by adding more berths to an already overcrowded ship. Who wants the noise from the nightclub on Deck 5?

I agree. One thought is maybe 555 is the temp the steaks are broiled?

The Destiny was getting ripped apart in reviews over the last several years. I guess Carnival felt the need to try with a fresh start after spending so much money on this ship but why this name?

If she was being ripped apart for being outdated (I assume), a nice refit with a blog from John Heald should should solve the problem.

With this "rebirth," she will be an even more crowded ship than before. Not only are they adding more capacity, but at the same time reducing the amount of public spaces and lounges - not to mention a much smaller show lounge.

...reconfiguration aside, I still can't get over the name. *shrugs*

Maybe because of these reviews? These times you can 'google' everything - the new name is not yet 'out there'.

Is this the first time a cruise line is renaming a ship and keeping it in their fleet? I find this strange, the only reason I think they would rename it is because the naming scheme "Destiny" doesn't sound fun, magical or tropical. Their other ships have a fun or tropical feel to them.

Also, looking at the deck plans I do see that the showlounge is one two floors and the forward dining room is only one level not two.

I sailed on the Destiny back in 99 and did find her cramped. I wonder how it will be with the added pax. Strange move to me but these execs think they got it right I guess! Probably have never cruised themselves.....

I guess it's cheaper to rebuild a ship in dry dock, than to wait two years for a new build that is fresh.

Costa is down two ships now. Does it sound interesting that they would debut the new ship in the Med before bringing her back to New Orleans. That's what everybody else does when a ship comes out of dry dock over there.

Let's just say for shits and giggles, now I've thought this through a bit more ... Carnival takes an old ship, rebuilds it and puts it in the med. Do a season and see what kind of reviews a Carnival ship gets in the Italian market and if that proves to be successful, then the migration of ships from here to there can be set in motion ... Could you see other destiny ships or even fantasy builds being crossed over to a new platform based on the sunshine model?

Maybe once this repositioning comes Carnival might break up the fleet and start spreading ships across the spectrum of their holdings?

Something is afoot in Miami ... I guess we will see what happens with this rebuild.

Or even go so far as to re-brand Costa and absorb them into a wider fleet under one name and get rid of the problem child and create something new under the Carnival name? I.E. Sunshine Cruises ???

The older Costa tonnage will be sold off, the newer ships retrofitted and renamed and brought under this new umbrella.

Do you think that by renaming and re-branding an old ship they will begin to consolidate part of the lines into a new brand or ship type instead of ordering new builds?

Is it cheaper to start retrofitting ships rather than build from the keel up?

Just a few thoughts...

Definitely, if it will update the tonnage and give them a few more years of marketable and competitive use. Royal Caribbean has been doing this since the 1980s: look at the number of ships they have stretched, revamped and recreated public rooms, and added balconies to. Celebrity has done the same thing, adding entire decks of balconies, updating public rooms; currently they are "Solsticizing" their older tonnage.

What is a bit new and seemingly odd in this Carnival situation is renaming the ship--the speculation about exploring a new brand is intriguing.

Maybe Carnival just wants to start over with a clean slate for the DESTINY?

In this age of "Googling", the average cruiser knows all about Googling stuff and nothing about ships! So, if the potential passenger will look up CARNIVAL SUNSHINE on Google, they won't see the aforementioned nasty reviews of the CARNIVAL DESTINY!

Just thinking about which ships were renovated and kept by the same company with a new name. One would be Galileo being completely renovated into Meridien, though that went from Chandris Fantasy to Chandris Celebrity. Matson did it twice, first with Malolo as Matsonia and then in the 50's with the Monterey, completely refurbishing her as Matsonia, and then later renaming her Lurline. Furness Bermuda was planning on renaming the Bermuda as Queen of Bermuda after her complete rebuilding from the 1931 fire in Hamilton, but she burned again at the yard. Cunard refurbished and renamed the Vistafjord as Caronia. P&O refurbished and renamed Sea Princess as Victoria. So it definetly has been done before.

And SEAWARD/NORWEGIAN SEA.

Also, Pullmantur's SKY WONDER/ATLANTIC STAR and PACIFIC DREAM/HORIZON.

A whole mess of ships had "CARNIVAL" and "CELEBRITY" added to their names in the past few years but I assume that doesn't count.

To be fair, the NCL examples of Dreamward/Norwegian Dream and Windward/Norwegian Wind, as well as the Nordic Empress/Empress of the Seas, were cases of bringing older ship names into conformity with a fleet naming system.

That isn't true with Carnival Destiny. It isn't like "Carnival Destiny" is a name out of conformity with the rest of the fleet. It fits perfectly fine. They're changing it for marketing purposes.

1. They can market the ship as "The NEW Carnival Sunshine" despite being 17 years old.

2. Passengers who sailed Destiny in the past, and who may not have been too impressed, will also be more inclined to try Sunshine with its new features.

With CCL (and NCL), if you're looking for an explanation for their decisions it always comes back to $. Period.

Actually NCL did over the names of all the ships at basically the same time when they launched the new naming pattern of Norwegian this or that.. Only the Norway was left alone. The Seaward became Norwegian Sea at the same time. It was the launch of the Norwegian branding which finally came to the silly Cruise Like a Norwegian that they are now using.

I keep waiting for the new activities ... shore side pillaging, etc ....

The new name should be 'Carnival Density'.
