Here’s a very unexpected announcement:

Costa has confirmed it will take up an option to build a new cruise ship.

According to reports, the new vessel is set to be the first in a series of “Super Costa” vessels from the firm and is planned to arrive in October 2014.

The ship will follow the firm’s recent tradition for large-scale vessels too, with the new 132,500gt design likely to feature capacity for up to 4,928 passengers*.

Latest newbuild ‘Fascinosa’
Italian state shipbuilder Fincanteri will take up the contract, with the ship pencilled in for an October 2013 arrival.

Pier Luigi Foschi revealed the plans on Saturday, as the company celebrated the delivery of its newly-constructed liner the Costa Fascinosa.

Speaking to the Independent, Mr Foschi also revealed that business was booming for the firm.

“Bookings now are higher than we forecast, and higher than they were a year ago. The [customers] who knew us in the past have been loyal,” he said.

(cruise.co.uk)

Malcolm says: That’s bigger than Concordia with more passengers! This sounds like a very brave business decision, given the Concordia tragedy, but If she is to be delivered in 2014, it must have been planned and designed at long time ago. Given that Costa bookings are said to be down (by some sources), it is not very good timing all round.

*If the figures quoted are right(?) she will be a very crowded ship indeed. She is smaller than Royal Princess, Breakaway and project Sunshine, but carries almost 1,000 more passengers.

The passengerc capacity must be wrong!

So is this a new class of ship or based on 'Carnival Dream' at a more realistic 3,600 pax approx?

hi Malcolm,

you surely must have missed an order

the one coming up in october 2014 was ordered some 2 years ago and has 3.708 lower beds

the one they are talking about now is another option of the same type of ship, with that crowded max capacity of 4.928 pax

surely very crowded when fully booked, i think
these two ships will be variations on the Carnival
Dream / Breeze type with similar figures

best,
Joe

So I guess this is what Micky Arison meant when he said they would not be building any larger ships than they currently are. I guess if you can keep increasing the capacity and thus profits without going bigger why waste the money. It's only the customer's experience that is sacrificed.
I'm really surprised that Carnival would go through with this order. I'm sure when mass media get's a hold of the story their will be a lot of negative attention over the increased capacity right after the public viewed them as being unable to handle the capacity they had. If it's a new build from scratch for Costa (doubtful with Carnival's record) though they may be able to spin this into a positive since it will be the first post Concordia ship design for them (even though it was likely designed prior to the accident).
