Sad photo in website referenced below. Website is French but if you scroll down to 20/3/13 you will see photos of Atlantic Star (previously Fairsky, Sky Princess and Pacific Sky) but now renamed ANTIC by her new owners who are known as wrecking merchants. She is rumoured to be undertow on her final journey from France to Alang in India where she crashed onto that ugly beach and broken up for scrap .French Website

The URL you posted wasn't complete but I found it - here is the link.

It's not a surprise at all but still odd to see such a 'young' ship being scrapped.

P.S.: Nice to see Europa 2.

I have seen reports saying she is headed for Alang and others saying Aliaga. I have seen reports saying she has been renamed ANTIC and others saying ATLANTIC S

So... she is more than likely going to end up in Aliaga as that is where IONION PELAGOS' AIS states at present and certainly they are sailing in the right direction... it could change.

A photo here, looks as though she is named ANTIC, but it's not too clear - photos on the site I think you were trying to link to definitely show ATLANTIC S - here. Who knows what is correct?

Pam

Pam,

Look again at those pics on Marine Marchande: it's definitely ANTIC!

I'm obviously a fan of this ship given my screen name. I sailed on one of her first cruises in June 1984 during her inaugural season to Alaska. What a shame to see this young ship go to the scrappers. It only highlights how much the industry has changed. It is remarkable that the RVL trio, which are 10 years older, are still sailing while Fairsky is gone.

Sad to see such a fantastic looking ship headed for the beach. Loved her as the Sky Princess. Just saw Europa 2 turned out uglier than i thought . Funny you have ugly ships being built and all the sexy looking ones going to die, not fair! no pun intended lol

I went down to San Pedro when she made her maiden voyage and inaugural ceremonies in Los Angeles. She was quite a sight. She was docked at the old Matson pier and towered above everything around her. Compared to the other regular callers to LA at the time (the Princess trio and Fairsea) she was a behemoth. In those days it was beyond easy to board, so I spent the day exploring this brand new ship. What a wonderful day that was. The Italian crew were so excited about their new ship. The excitement in the air was infectious. At sailing time it was fire boats and streamers, bands playing and all that goes with a maiden departure. What great memories!
It's seems like it was almost yesterday and now she is off the the breakers. So sad to see her go.

Michael

She has always been one of my favorite modern cruise ships. When I see her, I could easily imagine her being an Italia liner from the 1980s w/her tiered aft decks with swimming pools and her very attractive profile. My family and later I w/friends did three cruises on her as tss Fairsky and later Sky Princess. She was so impressive when new w/her traditional yet modern profile. She was the newer big sister to the older tss Fairsea and Fairwind.

It is sad as there are simply few if any attractive cruise ships being built today. It is ashame that Sitmar ordered her as a turbine driven ship. Had she been built w/diesels, she could easily seen another 10-15 years of service.

The steam turbines were only part of her downfall. The Oceanic made it to nearly 50 with her steam plant as did the Emerald ex. Santa Rosa. Steam is getting difficult to run and the costs are getting out of hand nowadays but it was not the root of the problems for the ex. Fairsky.

Maintenance was a big part of it (and maybe partially how well she was built). By the time she left Princess she was having mechanical issues and by the time she was finished in Australia she was already mechanically worn out. Pullmantur bought her because they were afraid a competitor would buy her and Pullmantur way overpaid for a ship with major mechanical problems.

Very sad to see her go because she was a nice ship but she lacked modern amenities and the mechanical problems were simply prohibitively expensive to fix. If she had been taken care during her life maybe she could have avoided some of these life ending problems.

When did she finally hit the beach? I can't seem to find anything about it yet online.

She had rust problems too.
Part of her side had to be cut out and replaced after it gave way and she took on water while sailing out of Auckland.

wel.. in the "good old days" of the ocean liners, those ships rarely made it past 25! And, while pretty, she was simply an unreliable and outdated steam-powered ship.

True but we have seen many ships older than her trade for another 10-15-20 years. The former RVL sisters are perfect examples and yes those are all motor ships. The poor Fairsky of course had outdated engines installed when new and apparently was not properly maintained for decades based on mechanical as well as structural issues she has endured. As for being old and outdated, I get a kick looking at the above photo of her w/the 65-year-old former SAL liner Stockholm (now Athena) docked in front of her. 65-years of continuous service but w/tens of millions of dollars in refits and rebuilding and still in service. Some ships are lucky and others not.

Indeed. So sad.

Still, I would love to see the video of how they beached her. There are other videos on YouTube from Aliaga showing ships steaming at full speed onto the beach. I don't know how Fairsky managed as she was towed to her final resting place.

Are there any more photos available?
