Royal Caribbean's Grandeur of the Seas has suffered a small fire overnight and it is making the rounds of the news media now. Just what the industry did not need.

It happened overnight and some reports say it was on the aft mooring deck. Passengers were rousted and sent to life boat stations as a precaution but the fire appears to have been quickly extinguished. The ship did not lose power and is on her way under her own power to Freeport in the Bahamas instead of Coco Cay.

I guess they felt it was easier to access the extent of the damage in Freeport and they have the shipyard there if need be.

And for the funny irony .... when the fire was reported the closet ship in the area was the Carnival cruise ship which the US Coast Guard ordered to stand by just in case.

The aft mooring deck is where Carnival's ECSTASY had her fire, famously blazing off South Beach in 1998. In that incident, it was determined that lint clogging heating vents caught fire and ignited coils of nylon lines on the mooring deck.

Just got off the Grandeur of the Seas on Friday. We had a small fire while entering Bermuda last week. While standing on deck 10 watching our sail in the Bravo Bravo Bravo alert was sounded. Couldn't understand the details because of all the wind up there on that day but it was some kind of closet. Not sure if it was electrical or IT related. Never heard anything else so I'm sure it was just another one of those small fires that happen all the time and nothing related to this.
Royal Caribbean seems to have done an excelent job of staying on the story. From what I can tell the story broke first from them and they've maintained control the whole time. They even posted the first pictures:

The open deck directly above the effected deck is the crew disco. It has tons of lights and music going all night long. According to the crew though no one uses it because they want to sleep and it's the only place they can smoke onboard so that's all that ever happens there. Wonder if someone smoking may have caused something.

She's a great little ship and Captain Espen Beem is onboard. Incredibly personable and a great sense of humor so I'm sure that's helped the onboard moral.

Not going to lie, I really wish I was still onboard to have seen this. Especially now that the execs are headed there to talk to everyone onboard. This is Royal Caribbean's first incident of this nature in a while so it'll be interesting to see what their compensation package ends up being.

Royal Caribbean seems to be doing a great job of handling the situation and PR side of things. Less than 8 hours from the time the fire was put out Adam Goldstein was already on the scene. Less than 12 hours from the time the fire started they've already shared a picture of Adam in the South Pacific Lounge looking at the damage.

From that picture it looks like the windows were intentionally taken out to aid in fighting the fire from above. All of the internal damage is right at the windows. Even the chairs right there only suffered partial damage on the side facing the window. If the fire naturally broke those windows I would think the damage would be worse.

They have canceled the trip; flying the passengers home from Freeport.

They do seem to be on top of it with a good disaster plan but still the industry did not need this press.

I assume the Granduer will be off to the shipyard in Freeport ASAP for some new windows, paint, etc.

Here in Canada tonight, Royal Caribbean made the National News with this fire.

It was reported as part of the ongoing woes of the cruise industry, and quite possibly a fresh warning to Canadian travelers to be on guard of cruise ships.

Since summer is upon us, we like to travel far and wide.

Our national news is good at informing the public.

This was handled with a helluva lot more finesse than Captain Shettino of the Costa Concordia.

I wonder what structural damage she has that will take until July 12th to fix. The Oasisizing she went through last summer only took 5 weeks and that was a complete overhaul of everything. They upgraded the centrum, added interactive screens in every lobby, created restaurants out of conference rooms, and even redid the cabinetry and sinks in every cabin onboard. I can't imaging any level of cosmetic damage from the fire could take longer than all of that did.

I think Royal Caribbean will fix the ship in no time. That fire awfully resembles the one Carnival Ecstasy back in the 1998.
