Celebrity Century is to join CDF Croisières de France, the Paris-based subsidiary of Pullmantur/Royal Caribbean, in spring 2015, adding more berths, balcony cabins and amenities.

The ship will join the 1,444-berth CDF Horizon and replace the smaller Zenith, which is scheduled to operate cruises from Marseille for CDF from mid-April to mid-November 2014.

The change, announced by CDF, would explain why Celebrity Century is cutting short its Asia season in 2015 and deploying to Europe in the spring, as earlier reported. Asked to address the ship transfer, a Royal Caribbean spokeswoman told Seatrade Insider Celebrity Century remains an active member of the Celebrity fleet and if that should change, it would be announced in 'an official press release.'

Built in 1995 and extensively upgraded in 2006, Celebrity Century has 1,814 lower berths and tonnage of 71,545gt. The 1992-built Zenith, which also previously sailed as a Celebrity ship, has 1,440 lower berths and tonnage of 47,255gt. Currently in the Pullmantur stable, Zenith just emerged from an 18-day refurbishment at Navantia in Cadiz.

The addition of Celebrity Century enables CDF to provide a more upscale offering since, unlike Zenith, it has many balcony cabins. It will also help to reach the 120,000 passengers CDF aims to carry in 2015, up from the 2014 target of 100,000 and the 55,000 achieved in 2013.

To support its ambitions, CDF plans to increase itineraries, as well, to 22 different ones in 2015, up from 15 in 2014 and eight in 2013. Among them is a new Caribbean route with a call at Venezuela's Margarita Island in winter 2014/15, a 12-night Mediterranean discovery cruise with an overnight in Istanbul and a 14-night Northern Europe cruise visiting Iceland, Scotland, Ireland and England.

Celebrity Century is the oldest ship in the Celebrity fleet and, apart from the 98-passenger Galápagos vessel, Celebrity Xpedition, the smallest. It is currently operating from Port Everglades, offering varied Panama Canal, Bahamas and Caribbean cruises, to be followed by Pacific coastal voyages and a return to Alaska in the summer.

A mid-September cruise will reposition the ship from San Francisco to Sydney for the balance of 2014 and early 2015. In February 2015, Celebrity Century will embark on a series of cruises from Singapore, capped with a sailing to Dubai in late March.

A cruise from Dubai via the Suez Canal will take the ship to the Mediterranean, arriving in Civitavecchia in late April 2015.

So sorry to see her leave Celebrity. I liked her decor better than any other ship in the fleet.
I don't think Zenith is any smaller than Horizon. She may carry fewer pax, but they are sisters otherwise.

So will Zenith go back to Pullmantur? NAL, I think they mean CENTURY is larger than ZENITH, the wording is ambiguous. CENTURY is upscale as she has more balconies.. so the more balconies the more upscale a vessel is? - interesting Having sailed both ships, I think I prefer ZENITH anyway especially as she has been given a refit.

I re-read the post and I think you are correct Pam. I sailed both Horizon and Zenith on the old Bermuda run from NYC when they were first with Celebrity. I am sure they have both been updated. I did like what was done to Century in 2006 or so. Horizon and Zenith were terrible seaboats on the old NYC Bermuda run. That can be a very rough stretch of water. Once, on the same run, on the old Volendam, ex Brasil, we had the bow going under and the Observatory above the bridge was taking waves. She was a good seaboat, but did a wild dance for the entire day.

NAL, what I hate most about modern boxboats is the stiff, jiggling, non-symmetrical lorry/truck like ride.

The old liners and the QM2 have gentle symmetrical waterbed motions like the Mid Century Moore McCormack twins.

Funny is my partner gets seasick on the QM2, and I am fine, where he is undisturbed on the buckboard riding R-ships where I get uncomfortable.

Back to topic is the CDF, that does both French and Spanish language cruises, has a wonderful addition to the fleet, and older tonnage does not mean less of a cruise experience.
