Portuscale cruises who are now the owners of the Classic 1955 built ' Princess Danae ', which is now named ' Lisboa', have annouced that the planned cruises for 2014 have been cancelled.

Costs to return the ship to service and also meet the new 2015 pollution regulations are proving to be more costly than expected.

This could mean that both her and her sister ' Princess Daphne ' , which is laid up in Crete, could be heading to the breakers.

Hi, the Daphne is NOT owned by Portuscale Cruises, but the Potamianos brothers are said to try to raise funds to purcahse her.

Hi Dack -

I just mentioned that the ' Princess Daphne ' was laid up in Crete , not that she was owned by Portuscale Cruises !

The ' Princess Daphne ' could finish up as a replacement for the ' Ocean Countess ' subject to the cost of returning her to service and meeting the new regulations which start in January 2015,

The ' Princess Daphne ' has in the past been owned by Majaestic International Cruises and sailed as ' Ocean Monarch ' .

I believe the owners were able to keep the Princess Daphne while the rest of the old firm went into liquidation and was sold off to become Portuscale. As I recall that was the deal with the banks.

Officially they said they were going to restart the firm with the Daphne and that they had charters lined up. But based on the condition that the Portuscale ships are in I would bet the Daphne is in need of a lot of maintenance/upgrades to sail again. Indeed the reports from Portugal is that her sister the Danae is in very poor condition. It seems one of the issues has to do with the refit from the 1970s. The materials did not stand up like the original 1950s hull and so they are having to do a lot of upper body work on the Danae. It is just a guess but I would think the Daphne has similar wastage in her structure.

Quietly she went up for sale and recently I have been seeing listing for her in a variety of places with a suggested US$13 million price.

I suspect the brothers simply held on to her/took her in the bank settlement thinking they could resell her once they had clear title and recoup some of their lost monies.

The market for a ship like this is basically non existent especially if she needs work. Odds are she sits around rusting and heads off to the scrap yards.

I doubt even Majestic would take her on because they will not want to pay for the refits necessary and their are far better small ships they could easily get as a replacement to the destroyed ex. Cunard Countess.

Lisboa photos (ex-Princess Danae)

Here you can find the most recent update from Lisboa (ex-Princess Danae). It leave the dry dock, to continue the works at quay near the other Portuscale ships. Lisboa is in new colors. He hope that they will do all works, this is the reason why they canceled all cruises for 2014.

best regards

Hi Pam

The ' Lisboa ' was cruising for the French market after they had opened an office in Cannes..

The cruises, for which I downloaded their first French brochure in December 2013, were advertised then from the 23rd March 2014 until the 23rd October 2014.

There was also talk of a round the world winter cruise much as she had operated before when under charter from CIC.

Their French website below -

The ex ' mv Athena ' sailed from Marseilles today where she has been since September 2012.

Having been refurbished and renamed ' Azores ' by her new owners she is heading at 15 knots to Lisbon where she is due to arrive about 08.00 hrs on the 7th February 2014.

Next month she starts her german charter which runs until November 2014.

It appears that the first two cruises for Ambience with AZORES have been cancelled due to low take up but there is nothing mentioned on their website.

Thanks, yes it's the cruises of 3 and 12 April which have been cancelled. A no single supplement offer on 16 March too. 29 March is a good price indeed.

Do the brothers actually have a clear title to her?
I read a notice today issued by the Chania port Authority, dated 5 March, approving her removal to outside the port of Chania as she's blocking the pier - to be done within one month. There are also other reports about saying that notice was given to the 18 creditors back in Dec to remove her by the end of Jan. it appears as if it is the port authority either trying to find a buyer, or scrap.

Sad but by all reports here hull and motors were pretty clapped out after all these years. I remember when she was an exciting new ship when Carras brought her to New York. Hard to believe that was 1977!
