The Norwegian Breakaway made news yesterday when she broke down in the Hudson River. She reportedly had a problem with her propulsion which caused her to sit in the Hudson River just off the pier for three hours till a tug boat could get there to assist her into the berth.

I'd be more concerned over why it took 3 hours for a tug to be available. It was a problem with a thruster according to the USCG.

In the past New York made the cruise ships have tugs on standby even when they were maneuvering on their own. I thought they still did (at least on the sailings) but maybe they finally dropped that requirement. Also the docking pilot generally got on and off on the tug.

USCG said thrusters but in the video it looks like the thruster was working when they were coming alongside. I suspect it was a pod problem not thruster.

The passengers are just lucky that to keep to schedule the line did not decide to tender them to shore <grin>.

In the old'en days the captains of the Queens, the United States, etc. actually were able to dock without thrusters or tugs on a few occasions. Granted the Norwegian Breakaway is a lot bigger with a large sail area but with propulsion and some skill you would think they could still have slowly edged her in if need be without the thrusters as long as the tide was not against them and the winds.

Seems we never know half the truth. NCL said a small technical maintenance issue with one of the pods, the delay was apparently due to having to wait for better tide/current conditions [thought that was the point of tugs to assist in unfavourable conditions].. but all this might be complete rubbish as it now appears a whale was the cause.

Yes a million different answers and possibilities.

Maybe they simply did not have enough tug power on hand to counter the tide and make the 90 degree turn if the ship's own propulsion was off line. When she did come alongside there is video that shows the thrusters were working. Maybe the engineers had been working frantically in the three hours to get everything on line?

NCL admits they hit and killed a whale but they say it was in the lower harbor and had nothing to do with the power problems. You have to wonder though if they whale did not have an impact on the pod or something?

As long as they do not have more problems tomorrow I assume this story has died though.

How could a whale hit a pod, which is situated aft? A thruster malfunction was stated by the USCG, which is located clsoe to teh bow, where the whale was hit.
am I worng?

Don't assume the whale strike was only on the bow first off. It could have some how hit the stern or the prop or the injured animal might have drifted along the hull or ..... or ........

When the ship docked the video shows the thruster appeared to be working. Norwegian has consistently said it was a "minor propulsion issue" and no matter what it seems to have cleared up because there have not been further reports of problems.
