A rather strange story from the Miami Herald

"Woman taken off cruise ship
A passenger was taken off a Carnival cruise ship on its way to a seven-day Caribbean cruise and brought ashore in Miami at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday for treatment of a rash, a spokesman for the Coast Guard said.
The ship, Paradise, was two to three miles off the coast when the passenger, identified only as an Indian woman believed to be in her mid 30s, was taken to Northshore Medical Center in Miami Beach, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Henry Twist.
The Coast Guard got involved because someone on the ship was afraid hospitals along the Paradise's itinerary would not be able to treat the woman, Twist said.
He did not know where the ship was coming from or how long it had been at sea.
According to Carnival's website, the Paradise -- billed as the world's first no-smoking cruise ship -- sets sail from the Port of Miami-Dade at 4 p.m. every Sunday."

She can only have just commenced her cruise. She must have known about it before embarking, and it must have been bad enough for her to seek almost immediate medical advice. So why did she embark and not seek advice beforehand? Surely it must be more than a "rash" to warrant being taken off??

Pam - You're right, if she had the rash before boarding she should have seen a doctor. However people on a cruise are exposed to a lot of different foods they normally may not eat. It could have been an allergic reaction to a food item. I'm allergic to mushrooms which sometimes causes a problem for me if they're ground up and not visible in a sauce or gravy. I always have to ask before ordering. Some people can get very sick from shellfish while regular seafood causes no ill efects.

Yes, I suppose she could have had a severe reaction to something she had eaten since boarding.
The Miami Herald must be short of news, reporting on that with so little known detail. Don't suppose we'll ever be enlightened as to what actually happened.

Yes, she had a splinter in her index finger and a bit of 'sleep' in her right eye too!

Joking aside, a rash could be a symptom of something serious like menigitus, or of course something very trivial?

Strange things happen! I just received an e-mail from a friend in Scotland - she ate Walnut Cake and within a couple of hours had developed a really bad rash all over her legs and torso - itches like hell she tells me -it's being checked out by her GP.

Is there something to read in The Sun?

Perhaps I should have added .com
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a hard copy available in Cambridge though, some newsagents have quite a selection of overseas papers.
