I have often picked up the odd few swizzle sticks. Most these days are nothing interesting, just generic plastic or wooden 'stirrers', with a logo of the cruiseline somewhere. They get filed away to be forgotten, maybe never even to be found again, as 'filing' is often a cardboard box of junk.

One bunch however, I keep out in a glass [from a pub] on the side in the kitchen. Just plastic, but a few different pictures of Shaw Savill ships & 'scenes' onboard Southern Cross. The centre pieces 'swing' as would a real English Pub sign.

I was wondering what other swizzle sticks have been produced in the past, that CT'ers may have? I am sure in the days gone by there must have been some quite elaborate decorative ones about?

Pam

A very nice collection Pam!

Even on Cunard these days, all you get in a blue plastic stick with the Cunard logo, no swinging Pub signs!

Hello PamM-----I have a few Pub sign plastic sticks from Shaw-Savills "Northern Star"------and a couple of metal(red & blue) Cunard "arrows"---used as olive picks from RMS Carinthia ex Liverpool in the early 60's. Sorry I cant send a pic as I am the original computer dummy!! Cheers.

Nice collection indeed. A second hand store in my neighbourhood also has a jar with swizzle sticks for 25 cent. Every now and then I look if they have new ones but as yet I haven’t found a one of a liner company.

swizzle sticks are funny things, I don’t know if they belong in the “take it your self” souvenir category or not. I once had an argument with a waiter at a restaurant who saw that the swizzle sticks was missing from the glass. Of course I had placed it inside my back pack because it was a nice looking design and I thought what does it matter. Well the waiter added one and one and began insisting I gave the plastic thing back to him. Not in the mood to make a fuzz I gave it back, but of course he did not get a tip from me!

Do cruise lines make a fuzz about taking swizzle sticks?

I have never heard of a cruise line expecting to have the swizzle stick returned--these items are just thrown away along with the paper napkins and paper coasters. It seems unbelievable that they would take the time to wash them for re-use!

Of course it's difficult to even find nice plastic swizzle sticks anymore--on some lines they are made of wood, supposedly because this is more environmentally-friendly than disposable plastic.

The red one just to right of centre says "ss Northern Star & ss Southern Cross Sports Deck" on the reverse [as per the one far left]; so the same set I expect were on all Shaw Savill's ships. Must be quite a few around still, but a fun conversation opener sometimes when people see them.

Onno, these things are just binned. I cannot imagine any of the bar staff being upset. They would soften & bend in the heat of a dishwasher at the temps required on ships. The wooden ones, being 'germ' collecters, would not be permitted to be reused. I did as a youngster save a few umbrellas too, used to be pricey things, but nowadays bags of any number can be purchased for £1.. but they do fall apart quicker!

You have interesting 2nd hand stores. I occasionally look around the ones near here & the charity shops, to see if there is anything shippy of interest, but never found much wrong type of area.

I wondered myself why the waiter was making all that fuzz, maybe he just had a bad day or something or maybe they ran out that day ?! Anyway I give the Swizzle Sticks a good lick before I stuck it in my back pack, so there wasn’t the need for a dish washer!

A while back I was googling and came on a site which had a bunch of cruise Swizzle Sticks from Princess and others for sale. Sometimes there are some on E-bay.

As for the second-hand markets and shops, you need to know the places and I mostly discover them by accident. 90% of the time you only find junk but every now and then I stumble on something interesting. A couple of years ago, during a vacation in England, I went to a huge flea-market in Canterbury (during the return trip to Dover), there was so much I wanted to buy which I could never take home with me (a real pity now that I think of it) But I did get a lot of SF collectables for low prices.

For years I saved swizzle sticks from every ship I sailed and every pub and hotel lounge I visited - mostly plastic but a few were wooden. Book matches too were a collector's item. I travelled a lot and my luggage was plastered with glitzy city and hotel labels. I recall applying varnish to a much used cabin trunk to keep the labels on!

When you have a house with an attic and a basement, storage is no problem. Comes time to downsize and something (read many, many boxes) has to go. I tossed the lot. My one remaining ship souvenir is a much faded blue velvet-clad sailor boy from R.M.S. Franconia. Somewhere I think there's an embroidered blue silk handkerchief from The Duchess of York.

Thinking back, I believe I posted a picture of my sailor boy on the Travel Page/Cruise Travel board.

I'm happy to be a long time member of this great group - Thank you Joe!
