SNCF operated great boat trains from Paris-Nord to Le Harvre for "France's" sailings and to Cherbourg for "QE2." The beauty of the operation was that, once our baggage was checked aboard the train, we next saw it in our cabin aboard ship! These were the most painless embarkation procedures we had ever encountered.

En route, we had an excellent meal in the dining car, fixed menu according to class booked on the ship. It was certainly superior to traveling that distance by bus....er coach!

And our wine and liqueur purchaes from Fauchon, not many just one or two, traveled aboard the same train. We next saw them, undamaged, when we disembarked in NYC. A great and seamless system....then.

Found this picture off the Wilhelminakade terminal.
The ship is the t.s.s. Veendam.

Only special trains drive all the way to the Wilhelminakade terminal. There was no direct link between the HAL terminal and the railway network. Before 1959 passengers from abroad (mainly frome the east) and eastern/southern parts off the Netherlands arriving by train at the Maasstation. Thene take a taxicab ore bus / trolly to go to the wilhelminakade.

Passengers comming frome Brittain by boat and passengers frome the northern parts off the Netherlands arriving by train at the Delftse Port station. Thene take a taxicab ore bus / trolly to go to the wilhelminakade.

After 1959 all passengers arriving by train arrived at the new Central Station Rotterdam in the center off the city.

I remember arriving in Southampton once in the early '80s aboard CANBERRA. You disembarked the ship into the terminal, collected your luggage and boarded the train which was standing inside the terminal, just next to the luggage area.

It was a great system with everything close together and under one roof, without going out into the elements!

It was certainly a grand way to travel.

Just imagen those big and massiv steam engines witte those elegant traincars. Bringing here passengers to a terminal in Southampton , Le Havre etc. so they cane board a grand liner as Normandie, Queen Mary, Europa ore Nieuw Amsterdam.

Nice pic's Ocean Liners.

Southampton's Southwestern Hotel, about half a mile from the dock (maybe less?) had it's very own station.

Passengers staying overnight could catch the train to the Ocean Terminal, from their doorstep. The train then crossed the main road on its way to the docks.

Photograph Above: The South Western Hotel was taken over by the Royal Navy in August 1940 and given the name HMS Shrapnel. It was used for various naval administrative purposes, and as a transit camp for naval personnel. This photograph was taken after an air raid on the 23rd November and shows some damage to the rear of the hotel and to the Terminus Station.

It was used for various naval administrative purposes, and as a transit camp for naval personnel. The hotel remained in government hands until 1953, after which it continued to be used as offices by various organisations, including the BBC and Cunard Line. It was converted into apartments in 2001, and is now called Imperial House. This photograph shows naval staff working in the converted hotel.

Dover Marine station has now become the cruise terminal. Cars arrive instead of trains.

Dover Marine Station 1921.

Dover had the rather nice, Lord Warden hotel near the port, which was within walking distance of the dock. Once again the trains pulled right into the dock itself. In fact a 'boat train' was actually put on the 'boat', to France!

Canadian Pacific Lines used to run boat trains from London's Euston Station to the floating landing stage in Liverpool. Pursers staff used to man the train (not as drivers) and your liner check in was done enroute. Baggage checked into the van on the train was delivered to your stateroom. The most interesting part of the trip was the train going down the main street in Liverpool to the landing stage with Bobbies stopping the traffic at each cross street.

Approaching Liverpool Riverside Station

From www.subbrit.org.uk

Notes: Riverside Station was provided by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board specifically for boat trains (in particular the LNWR American Specials) running thorough the Waterloo Tunnel from Edge Hill.

The tunnel is/was from Edge Hill to Waterloo Road just across from E.Waterloo Dock adjacent to Princess Dock and Landing Stage.

In 1957, The Boat train was resumed service from Tokyo station to Yokohama port, but on the freight line(aka Takashima line) from Tsurumi to Yokohama Port was unelectrified so that Electric Locomotive "EF58" pulled from Tokyo to Tsurumi and made technical stop to exchange for "Steam" since 1959.

Tokaido main lines were completely electrified in the Autumn of 1956.
The last electrified portion was between Maibara and Kyoto.
