What celebrities have you seen, either in person or performing, that were way past-their-prime when you saw them.

I definately have to say it was seeing Bobby Rydell perform on the Song of Norway in 1995.

QE2 used to regularly have Craig Douglas on westbound crossings in the 1980's. I always found it amusing when he did his "hits" from 1959 and the early 60's. Most of them were "cover" versions of US hits by US singers and the predominantly american audience would start looking at one another saying such things as "That was a Sam Cooke song" (Only Sixteen) or "Wasn't that was a Gene McDaniels Song" (A Hundred Pounds of Clay), etc. A predominantly british audience would not have questioned the "hits" claim but Craig never seemed to get booked on UK cruises.

In October 1984 Brook Benton made a controversial appearance on QE2 on an eastbound crossing. He was well past his prime (about 20 years) and many in the audience in the Queen's Room walked out in disgust. He was a little better, but not much, when he did a 2nd performance the next night in the Double Room.

Brian, do you remember Roy and Jackie Toaduff from QE2? I've recently had some quite interesting correspondance with Jackie.

Yes. I remember Roy and Jackie but I haven't seen them since about 1979 or 1980. They were billed as World Clog Dancing Champions. I remember exchanging one liners with Jackie on deck one time as QE2 was leaving Southampton. Captain Bob Arnott was a big fan and referred to Roy and Jackie as "world class" entertainers in his 1982 book "Captain of the Queen".

I assume cruise ships even have a range of ‘celebrities’ that are only famous onboard cruise ships?

Many cruise lines have celebrities on board who are "has-beens" -- let's face it, you're not going to have a Celine Dion or anyone else in their prime doing cruise ship shows. The living conditions, the relatively small audiences and the pay scale are way below what they are accustomed to.

However, for someone who's been out of the spotlight for a while, it's a great opportunity to perform and get back among their fans. This also is very exciting for the passengers to see and meet a celebrity since they are usually very accessable on a ship.

Well they do say the band played on until the very end. There has been much debate as to what tunes they played. I suspect no was was listening very carefully.

Except for Shirley Bassey, I've never heard of any of the artists you quoted.

Maybe. But oldies like me have heard of all the entertainers mentioned so far in this thread (and many more not yet mentioned. )

Although I wasn't aboard at the time, I remember a Dame Vera Lynn perfomance on deck on QE2 that was televised live on PBS in the USA on the 50th anniversery of D-Day. Even at her advanced age, she was great because she had kept her voice in shape over the years. I have seen a few of her concerts for veterans and have always found it striking that half the audience have tears rolling down their faces when she sings "We'll meet again".

Marty Allen and his wife on the Grand Princess in March on 01. He was very funny and she was a terrific singer. Both were very down to earth. He still looks like a large troll doll!!!

Our first cruise on the Norway featured Jack Jones in cabaret and he got his father - Alan Jones - out of the audience to join him. My mother nearly fainted from excitement. As did I when on a Transatlantic on QE2 we had the fantastic Petula Clark in cabaret..............

On a less starry note, we were at a cocktail party on the Canberra many years ago. My mother was talking to another lady and asked her what she was doing on board - the woman replied "I'm one of the plumbers". "Heavens," said my mother, " that must be very physical, with all those wrenches and things". The woman looked simultaneously furious and icy - "You misunderstand," shge hissed. "I am one half of The Plummers - the novelty xylophone act"! Oooops.
