Ok, in response to numerous requests I have finally created Rail Talk (...I picked Rail Talk over Train Talk because is allowed for broader universe of topics).

The URL for Rail Talk is http://www.travelserver.net/forums/railtalk

It's running on the Snitz software that I was thinking about converting to a while back. You will have to re-register there for now if you want to participate in Rail Talk?

This will also be a good chance to test the software again. If you are interested in becoming a moderator of Rail Talk let me know and I will set you up as such. Also, feel free to suggest other forum categories.

Good afternoon,

And thanks a million, Joe.
This is great.

Before I became a cruise enthusiast, I was ( and still very much am ) a rail enthisiast.
This new forum will certainly be attracting lots of chatters; it will also be interested to find out how many of us are indeed rail afficionados as well, without knowing it or wanting to admit to it...
Thanks
Cheers
CG

I have joined and posted. However, I found somthing strange, Joe. It says that there are 29 members of whom 17 have made posts. Looking at the "member list" I see that the 28 members who joined before me all joined in 2003 and none have made a single post since 2003.

Could it be that these 29 "members" were actually just testing the "new" software that you were thinking of using for Cruise Talk a couple of years ago? It does seem strange that people can join a list 2 years before it is set up.

I might be wrong, but it certainly appears that I am the first member of "Rail Talk".

Brian

Oops! I see that someone joined in 2004 but has never posted. However that does change my claim of appearing to be the first legitimate member.

Brian,

That is exactly the case. I deleted the old messages but forgot to delete the old members.

Thanks Joe for setting up Rail Talk. Hopefully in between posts to Cruise Talk I can find the time to add my 2 cents worth here as well.

Joe:
I am having a hassle "re-registering." Possibly because I have elected a new posting name for rail talk? Can I do so, or shall I stay with my cruise talk "non de maritime?"

Cambodge:

Maasdam and I have both registered since Joe set up Rail Talk and have both used our Cruise Talk nicknames. I used the same nickname since I figured that most of the starting members would be fellow CT'ers who already "know" me by that name. I assume Maasdam did likewise for the same reason. There is no need to use a different name, but you can do so if you wish. The choice is yours.

I can understand setting up "rail talk" to test out the new Snitz software and hope for its success, both the new forum and the new software. However, I have been doing some checking and on other forums on this site the following has happened:

Air Talk: 609 postings in over 6 years with most being single postings with no responses.

Hotel Talk: 90 postings in just about 6 years with almost all being single postings with no responses.

Destination Talk: 91 postings in again just about 6 years, again single postings, few or no responses.

Therefore, I can understand why our host is reluctant to start another forum.

If you all look back you will see that we have discussed Air travel, carriers and airports, Hotels all over the world, Destinations both of cruises and other places and Trains, Hovercraft, and just about any other means of transportation right in the normal conversation of the various Cruise Talk threads. It seems to be a natural flow of ideas and comments that stem from a subject that someone puts on the forum and it is just easier to continue the conversation rather than insisting on specialization.

Jumping to a specialized forum just doesn't seem to work too well here on Cruise Talk.

I enjoy the free flow of the threads and we certainly have had some long ones (4 or 5 pages) and even shorter ones that have wandered all over the place, but have stimulated the interest of the various posters and kept many involved.

Again, good luck with the Rail Talk and I will be very pleased if I am proven wrong.

I don't post very often, but read them all and find a pretty good mix of subjects here. What do other CTers think?

Regards,

Jerry

Yeah, it has been disappointing. I posted several times on Air Talk hoping in a response but got nothing. I guess trying to post on several different forums is not that easy, time-wise. Anyhow, hopefully Rail Talk will work.

Thank You very much, Joe
I hope it will work out.
However, I tried to register again
but on clicking the "agree" button on the Privacy statement, I kept returning to this same page.

Perhaps I shall try again later ?

Wrong track.

While pulling out of the station on the postings re the establishment of "Rail Talk," I seem to have switched to the track containing the main themes of the Midships Lounge. The posting re "moderator designate," rightfully belongs here.
