Hi everyone,

Currentlly threading our way through all the ships waiting to enter a very hot and steamy Singapore.
Joined PP in Bangkok for its 30 day cruise to Capetown, and have been to Ho Chi Min City.It was then announced that KL was cancelled due to smoke from bushfires in Indonesia,so we had an overnight in Singapore.
Had a great time. These overnights on a long voyage are great. Now heading into the Straights of Malaca,(trust we avoid the Pirates and the smoke) next stop Colombo..............
but rumour is rife on board that we may miss that port as well due to the current political situation.
The ship is looking great after its refit.
Expected the ship to be full of North Americans, but Malcom and Pam will be pleased to know that there are lots of Brits on board.
Will try and be in touch again, depending on satelite connection.
Looking forward to the upcoming sea days, then leaving the ship in Colombo for 3 1/2 day India Overland to New Delhi,Jaipur,Agra and Taj Mahal.
All the best,
will check back soon.

Thanks for checking in and giving us a nice report.
Do enjoy the rest of your cruise.

I just heard from a friend in KL that the smoke condition is horrible. Better you don't call there.

Mike--still in TaiShan

JAIPUR! Wow! I spent 30 days in India duing my travels and this was one of my MOST favorite cities in India.

I am sure you will LOVE it. Make sure you see:

The Amber Fort
The wind Palace (Hawa Mahal)
Camels pulling carts and Brahma bulls

In New Delhi dont miss the RED FORT...very impressive.

In Agra we spent from sunrise to sunset at the Taj Mahal, the different lighting of the sun painting the marble from pinks to bright white to yellow. We also spent one whole day at Fatehpur Sikri, the city built then abandoned.

I wish you could also see:

Jodhpur: the blue city and the massive Umaid Bhawan palace (now a hotel, we stayed here

Udaipur: the Lake Palace and the stunning Shivniwas Palace (both also now hotels, stayed there also)

Khajuraho: the mysterious and very controversial temples (adult supervision required)

Have fun in India. It is an incredible palce!

P.S. We spent 3 days in Darjeeling up near the Himalayas. Literally takes your breath away. And you know what? They grow tea there too!

:-)

Hi Mike,

Just approaching the top of the Mallaca Straights and about to enter Indian Ocean.Still smoky, but starting to clear, went through the worst of the smoke during the night.Went out on the balcony about 3 am and the smell was very strong.

Hi dmwnc1,
Looking forward to the tour of India. It will be a highlight.I believe that there will be 3 coach loads doing the tour.We fly from Colombo to New Delhi, then on by coach to Jaipur and Agra before flying back to Mumbai to join the ship.

Today is the start of 3 sea days,2nd formal night tonight, only 4 on the cruise.

I too spent some time in Agra, Darjeeling, saw the Red Fort, stayed in the Lake Palace in Udaipur...I've always wanted to arrive to India by ship, and then do a road trip to see the sites again. India is a beautiful place, great wealth and fascinating people. Calcutta smells like campfires everywhere. Have a GREAT trip bmajor, and please give us a review when you return.

Hi again,

We are now in the the Indian Ocean, day 3 of 4 sea days,on a SW course from Mumbai to Mahe in the Seychelles.Formal night tonight and then tomorrow we cross the equator with a poolside ceremony at 2pm when King Neptune will visit.
The 4 days in India were...
awesome..............
a really full on 4 days with early starts, (5am,6am,and late into hotels at night) but I would not have missed one single moment of the amazing trip. The sights seen will be imprinted on my mind forever.India is a vast amazing country, full of contrasts .We have all heard of the teeming throngs of people who live there, but nothing can prepare you for what you see, until you experience it for yourself. The Taj Mahal was magic. We have ridden on elephants, visited grand Forts and Palaces and experienced both City and Country life.

An interesting aside was the bus trip.3 coaches were used ,each with 23 people on board,A very interesting study in human nature.Personality clashes arose as the group, from very diverse backgrounds tried to get on with each other during 4 very busy days in the small enclosed space of a bus.Fights erupted over seating arrangements with some people demanding the front seat each day .At times it got quite quite nasty and was only resolved when the guide swapped some folk over to another bus.But I guess thats life.
The pool gets crowed on sea days, and the old problem of reserving loungers is now appearing.
Oh well, thats cruising, but there always is a lounger to be found somewhere.
We are halfway through the cruise now..............
Where has the time gone.
Will check back again soon.
Internet room gets very busy.

Today was the start of another 3 sea days as we bid farewell to the Islands of the Indian Ocean and make our way over to to our first port of call in South Africa ,Richards Bay.
The cruise , or Voyage to Exotic Ports as I am looking at it, is really going well.
Since last calling in we have been to the Seychelles,Mauritius and Reunion Island.
We have had a little bit of everything as far as sea conditions are concerned, from smooth and glassy to rock and rolling.
Today we have a following sea which is making for very comfortable cruising.
The busiest desk on board seems to be the future cruise sales desk. Although this is only a small ship there is always a queue waiting to book another cruise.
Trust this good weather holds as we move further south, towards Capetown.

As we entered Richards Bay today I saw a Cruise ship moored in the distance which appeared to have the name Deleos.
It is a fairly old cruise ship.
Anyone know anything about her?

If it was 'Doulos', she's not just 'fairly old' she's probably the oldest at 91 years old!

I've been traveling for the last three weeks so getting in on this string late. However, another most interesting city in India is Madras.

Particularly for our Brits on the list is Fort William, where one building has been kept as a museum of the British presence in India. Fascinating things there, including uniforms, weapons, pictures and other relics of the Raj, and even, from the Seven Years War, actual letters, these are the original, from General Clive written during the Battle of Plessy!

Very interesting place.

Thank you for that info.It was indeed Doulos, and it was looking in great codition. The other interesting thing was that during our drive through the game park we saw a van with a Doulos sign on its side,so it must carry its own transport for shore visits.

There is something about leaving India by ship that also has significant emotional impact. In 1963, Nancy and I had arrived in Bombay on the "Punjab Mail" a train from Agra right out of Kipling's India. We had a waterview room in the Taj Mahal Hotel, overlooking the "Gate of India" and the Harbor.

First we saw a classic P&O, "Strath" liner departing. The lines of "A troopship is leaving Bombay," ran through in our minds. Shortly thereafter our "Laos" arrived, a white beauty amid the less-than-colorful ships at anchor and pierside.

The next day, a taxi across to the ship, then boarding, it was our first MM voyage, and a sunset departure, looking across the city toward the "Towers of Silence," as I recall. It was really a moment to be treasured.

We enjoyed our first visit to India, and we returned later, but there was something about that sailing from Bombay.....sigh!!!

Final Day has arrived.

Off the South Coast of South Africa and about to round The Cape.Seas are not as big as I expected them to be ....yet.
Swimsuits and bikinis have given way to jerseys and sweatshirts as the air gets cooler.
Most folk are spending the day packing, and
wondering how they managed to accumulate so much "stuff" in 30 days and also staring in wonderment and disbelief at the final accounts.

It has been a great voyage,on a great ship, with great staff, and wonderful and friendly group of fellow passengers.

Spending a few days in Capetown post cruise, then back home next week.

All the best
bmajor...............
