Rod Stewart and his girlfriend(wife?) were onboard my QM2 crossing to NY on August 3rd. I saw them board with two bellboys who were dressed in red, to help them with their hand lugguage. (My wife and I did not get the assistence of bell boys!)

I heard Rod say 'shes very big' as he entered with the Social Hostess (Amanda from the Cruise TV show), so I assume that it was his first crossing on her. Someone told me that he was a fan of the QE2?

Unfortunately Rod did not do any singing for us. 'We are sailing' would have done nicely!

I also saw him disembarking. They had a great big trolley filled with modern day 'steamer-trunk' type luggage.

Have any cruisetalkers seen celebs on ships?

Gary Grant (and his daughter) were on an Alaskan cruise on SS Mariposa in the late 1970s. It was a round trip from L.A. and I spoke w/him and his daughter many times. I am close to his daughter's age so we hung out together as there were very few other young people on board. He was reserved but ate in the dining room w/the rest of the passengers and went on shore excursions as well. Since the ship was small by today's standards, you would see him frequently. The Puerto Rican/American actress Rita Moreno was on a QE2 cruise w/us in the late 80s. She sang during one show and was a 'regular' passenger for the rest of the trip.

Here's a pic of me and Bert Lancaster. It was on the wonderful SEA PRINCESS in 1987, on long cruise from Bangkok down to Sydney. That cruise still ranks as one of my all time favorites (for a variety of reasons!).

I remember those drapes! I always wondered if they were left over from her Kungsholm days.

It is good to read that Cunard managed to transfer the celebrities from QE2 to QM2 on the crossings; IIRC there were some misgivings in the beginnings.

Nice pic Ernie, and probably good memories !

I have never been on board Kungsholm, but those drapes don't look "scandinavian", but rather American, I think.

I just found my Kungsholm brochure from 1966 and those drapes were there. They were in the cinema (covering the screen) as well as covering the windows of a bar/lounge. The drapes have a very European/French look IMO. Interesting that SAL and P&O kept the same style of drapes for all those years.

Malcolm ... you will have to fill me in on what "new romantic" means?????

I can say I was VERY happy on that cruise, and I only wish I could go back and do it all over again. It was just fantastic. I also met my dear friend Ruth Card on that voyage. She was known as Ruth Anasson back then and went on to marry marine artist Stephen Card many years later. It seems now I speak with Stephen more than Ruth! Even so, Ruth and I shared many memories on several cruises since SEA PRINCESS. She was a great "cruising buddy".

Rod's embarkation photo is here. Say no more

Pam

Malcolm's reply:-

Pam, how on earth did you firnd that? I'm sure I heard him say something like "oh the ship looks so much bigger than the QE2" - thus I assumed it was his first crossing on it? The text suggests otherwise.

Ernie, 'New Romantic's was a style of pop music and dressing in the mid 1980's. I suppose it was mainly a U.K. thing; Boy Geoarge, Duran Duran etc. They had big hair and flamboyant clothes;

"The New Romantic phenomenon was similar to that of glam rock during the early 1970s, in that (male) New Romantics dressed in effeminate clothing, often with frilly "fop" shirts, and wore cosmetics".

It's not an insult Ernie. Your trousers look a bit 'new romantic'.

Pam .... or Malcolm ... whomever wrote this

Thanks the info. I never heard the phrase before, and I don't take it as an insult at all. I was all about the 80's, believe me. I LOVED the 80's and wish I could go back. Nothing like big hair, lots of eye make-up, and Dallas, Knots Landing, and Dynasty to boot! What a great time.

You are right Ernie, the 80s were the BEST! Incredible Music, over the top fun fashion, great campy TV and just good TV. I think the major U.S. TV networks wish they could turn the clock back to reclaim their last 'golden age'. Go Alexis and Abby!!

Forgot to mention the music. Thanks for bringing it up. I LOVE 80's music and still listen to it. The 80's were just such an over the top period and seemed so innocent compared to now. I was young and naive and didn't know anything about politics or world affairs ..... and frankly I didn't want to know. Now that I'm older I worry about all that stuff. Back then, my biggest concern was which friends to go out with on the weekend and what bars to hit! No internet, cell phones, DVD's, or CD's to distract you. Cable TV was in it's infancy and MTV actually played music!

I spent the 80's (and my youth) in Los Angeles. It was such a great place to be young (and gay) and the city will always have a special place in my heart. I don't feel quite the same way about it today, but I can always "remember when".

As an L.A. native I totally agree. That is what happens to a city when you add a million or so people to the region! The So Cal of my youth is gone and it is sad.

LA is still a great place, but the negatives started to out way the positives which is one reason I left. My partner (a native Angeleno - Calabasas actually) was also ready for a change.

Unfortunately I'm watching Atlanta make all the mistakes LA made. There has been a huge influx of new residents over the last 10 years, and the growth is completely uncontrolled. The city is spreading out instead of up and we now have some of the worst smog and traffic problems in the country, rivaling LA. Atlanta is still a great city though, and I love all the trees (those that haven't been cut down). Atlanta used to be the most forested major city in the US ... I don't know if that holds true anymore?

I crossed on the QE2 and George Hamilton was on with his ex-wife & son, there was a message in the daily paper asking other passengers to leave him alone when he was with his son, but he would meet with anyone at other times.
Another cruise on the QE2, Robert Vaughn was on promoting his Superman movie and he was quite snooty as he passed on the main deck, but was all smiles on the upper level, Duh.

George Hamilton (the man famous for who the heck knows) was married to Alana Hamilton who later married Rod Stewart. It is musical chairs-but w/spouses . I have heard that Mr. Vaughn is rather full of himself.

While he may not have been a famous figure in Hollywood, on my first sailing on QE2, Walter Lord was on board.
For the few folks who don't know who he was, Mr. Lord was the author of "A Night To Remember", about the sinking of TITANIC. He was on board to promote his latest book, "The Night Lives On". A lovely, gracious man.
It just so happened that Frank Braynard was on board as well. Another joyous soul.
Karen Allen from "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" was on board QM2's July 1st '04 sailing.

I hung out with the CURE when they were on a QE2 crossing. I had no idea who they were...I walked by these guys in the Yacht Club, while we were in New York preparing for departure, and I thought it was a bit odd that these punkers were aboard the QE2. I was talking with my co-worker and mentioned that I saw these punkers earlier that day, and he said.."Don't you know who they are?" I said no...and he said, " That's the Cure." then I said...the cure for what? Honestly...I didn't know who the cure was. Now my brother is a big fan of this kind of music, so I went to talk to them. They were very nice...I showed them a few magic tricks and asked if they'd be ok if we took a photo. They were so enamered with my tricks they invited me to hang out in their suite to party. I declined, it was late and I had to get up early the next morning. My brother still brags to his friends that his older brother hung out with Cure. By the way, one of the guys sang in the passenger talent show, and he was absolutely terrible.

I met many other celebrities on QE2, Suzanne Sommers, Neil Diamond, Marvin Hamlisch, John Maxtone-Graham, Roger Ebert, and a few others.
