On this lovely sunny, but freezing cold, Oct day here in the UK it has reminded me of some links I received last week.

We have all seen photos of ships covered in ice before, but these two are amazing. I would not like to have been a crew member on these. See here and here.

Thanks for these amazing pics Pam. Never saw that quantity on large modern merchant ships before.

I hardly dare to figure how much weight it causes in the highs of the ships! Several photos exist showing crew breaking ice to avoid stability problems aboard destroyers whilst the Campaign of Norway or aboard Terre Neuve fishing ships.

Thats really dangerous to have high ice, it disturbs the center of gravity of the ship, and greatly increases the risk of capsizing.
When this happens for Bering Sea fisherman, its 20lb sledge hammers and a lot of ice breaking for hour and hours.
