With all the flight going to Europe being cancelled I wonder how this affects cruising/vacations which are starting now. Anyone have a problem??
This could be a disaster both globally and economically.
Ash of this magnitude could also affect global warming-actually it could cool off the Earth.

I'm sure the cruises have been seriously affected - I'm waiting to hear from my friend on Eurodam what is happening. His wife was supposed to board on Monday (don't know which port) but she's flying in from Tokyo.

My son was to fly out tonight to Portugal via Frankfurt on business and his flight has been cancelled. Right now he's hoping to re-book for mid-May, but who knows what will happen.

DD's business partner is stuck in England and has no idea when he will get back home.

What a mess. If I hear anything more I'll post it here.

I sure hope those cruisers have insurance.

Actually not. It's not so much the ash but the 'sulfur' (actually sulfur oxide or hydrogen sulfide) which can have a cooling effect - also on a global scale. This indeed happened in the case of other volcanic eruptions, however, the presently ongoing eruption in Iceland did not emit too much sulfur into the atmosphere.

I am supposed to fly from Miami to London on Wednesday to catch the QM2 back to NY. Right now your guess is as good as mine if this will actually happen. Frankly I'm not stressed. I'm at home and not stuck anywhere, and should I be forced to cancel I will receive a refund and book something else. All this is out of anyones control so no use getting worked up over it.

I agree that should this situation continue, almost every cruise line will feel a major impact. I just posted my thoughts on "QM2 as an express liner" thread.

This sounds like the travel disruptions (in Europe anyway) of 1939.

That's actually a good questions.
I hope you can go on your trip or that you at least get your money back since it seems as if some travel insurance contracts do not cover cancellations caused by this eruption.

Luckily in my personal situation a refund will not be an issue.

I'm glad we did not book a river cruise this Summer. This volcano seems not letting up. It could be months or who know when it will abate.
This is surely going to affect US cruisers going to Europe this Summer.

The volcano has now largely stopped erupting. The northern edge of the ash cloud is definitely moving south. There is a low pressure system heading down the north sea which will probably bring stronger winds than we've had over the last few days (although still northerly) so that may have an effect as well.

Scottish and northern English airspace is reopening at 0600Z tomorrow (Tuesday), and there is a hope that southern English airspace (particularly London airports) will be able to reopen at about 1800Z tomorrow. All London airports (other than London City) have been given permission to operate 24 hours a day for the immediate future.

Yesterday morning Travelmole advised that TUI were using ISLAND ESCAPE to bring passengers directly back to Falmouth along with a further 300 holidaymakers from Madeira and THOMSON DREAM was to be ferrying holidaymakers from Majorca to Barcelona for onward coach travel.

Today it is all over the news [Travelmole report] that instead of her 2 dys of launch celebrations, CELEBRITY ECLIPSE will be sailing this evening for Bilbao 2 collect 2,000 stranded holidaymakers.

"Company chairman and CEO of parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Richard Fain said:“The events affecting air travel are completely unprecedented, and it is in times like these that the global travel industry needs to pull together.
“Collecting stranded British and Irish holidaymakers is a fitting first mission for new ship Celebrity Eclipse – what better way for a ship dedicated to the UK to mark her arrival?”

“We hope that guests initially invited to join the launch celebrations on 22 April will understand the change of plan, and we look forward to welcoming as many of them as possible to the naming ceremony on 24 April instead.”

Celebrity Cruises is working with major UK tour operators to try to assist with their challenge to repatriate as many of their customers as possible. "
