I hear that the navigation equipment on the QM2 will be removed and replaced with new equipment. Only a few years ago the QM2 bridge equipment was labelled most innovative and " state of the art ". Anybody have any details as to why this is happening so soon ?

Where did you hear this? When is it supposed to happen? It sounds unlikely. How reliable is your source?

QM2 is scheduled to go into dry dock in early November to have her 4th pod re-installed. It was removed for repairs in May, after being damaged in January. Could it be that the pod was more badly damaged than originally thought and that it was decided to build and install a completely new one? That scenario is more believable than the one you are asking about.

This information came from two sources, the first from someone in marine operations of a sister company of Cunard and it was later confirmed by a technician who works for the company which supposedly received the contract. The present equipment is manufactured by the British company Kelvin Hughes, while the new equipment will be supplied and installed by the German company SAM Electronics, a division of L3 Communications. I don't think this has anything with the pod problem. I am just wondering why they would replace the equipment so soon, is it reliability, functionality, etc....?

At least the original was not supplied by the British firm Lucas Electronics (better known as the 'Prince of Darkness')

Nonesense....all you need on hand to fix Lucas products is this. I will admit once the smoke escapes the wires it is very difficult to get it back in

It's a cheeky nic name given to Lucas Electric highlighting their percieved unreliability.

A popular joke is
"why do the English drink warm beer.......because they have lucas refrigerators"

I think they meant that the bridge would be altered. Two meter sections will be added to the bridgewings during her next refit.

Yes this will be done next week during the "pod replacement" drydocking mentioned above.

There was a ‘rumour’ that Princess discussed replacing all of the Bridge equipment on the QM2 to have the same equipment as on the other (Princess) ships in the fleet.

If true, I guess that this was maybe more to do with 'staff flexibility' between ships than the kit being out of date or worn out? Of course this would be a very expensive thing to do. Therefore it may have been no more than a discussion and may not actually happen?

Time will tell.

Just wondering, If they extend the bridge wings will they also extend the Deck 11 Observation deck? Cheers Chateausmith.

My take:

The Kelvin Hughes is a Ford, and Captain Fussypants wants a Mercedes (SAM electronics)
