Hi there, I'm a newbie on this forum and stumbled onto this interesting website surfing the net... I think a cruise ship job would be something I'd like to do, being single, enjoying travel and working with people from all over the world. I've spent hours researching the net, got lots of info on cruise lines, trips, jobs aso and I'm overwhelmed. Applying for a job seems fairly easy, my question is which job? I've worked seven years as a Bellman in a hotel in Waikiki, Hawaii, and learned the meaning of "Aloha", so I'm good with people, can take care of groups and individual guests. I also worked as an english teacher in Tokyo and recently in Thailand, where I live. I speak fluent german, english and french, some japanese and greek. I'd love to get a job as a shore excursion assistant, but it looks that I'd have to be working on cruise ships for a year and would be able to move up from a lower position. What position should I apply for? Would the lines decide on which cruise to employ me? I think a med cruise would be the best for starters, since there'd be a lot of european guests....
Any thoughts, suggestions, tips appreciated by this greenhorn!

Go for a cruise staff job which will give you lots of time off to explore and enjoy. This would also be a natural progression into the shore excursion department or even becoming a Cruise Director. With your language skills, you should have no problems getting "in".

Thanks for your quick reply!
What kind of 'cruise staff jobs' are there? Since I never worked on a ship I have no idea what to expect; any job descriptions? Or is 'cruise staff position' a general term? I wouldn't mind being a bellman again, or concierge.
The lines that appeal to me are Star Cruises, RCI, Princess, Celebrity, Royal Olympic, Mediterranean Shipping Cruises; guess I'll send a resume to all of them. Any opinions on those lines or recommendations?
Contacting them directly or through their agents seems to be the way to go, any advice there or email addresses, or good sites to check?
Thanks for the help!

Have you cruised? Maybe you should take a mini-cruise so you can see first-hand life onboard a modern cruise ship.

Not a bad idea! Could have been mine - instead of finding a job, going on a cruise...hmmm...
Seriously, which "mini-cruise" would you recommend, considering the fact that I live in Thailand?
I've read something somewhere about a Phuket-Langkawi-Singapore cruise, forgot which line, any comments? -

You can check-out STAR CRUISES SuperStar Virgo sailing from Singapore to Penang,Malaysia and Phuket,Thailand. Check with a local agent to see if boarding in Phuket is allowed. If not, you must board at Singapore. Here is the link to Virgo's itinerary.

Virgo itinerary

Also, OCEAN PRINCESS CRUISES has the small Ocean Princess that sails from Phuket starting in October on 4d/3n and 3d/2n cruises calling at small islands. At the moment, most of the website in in Thai, but it is easy to decipher and the pictures help.

Ocean Cruises.

Finally there is Coco Explorer 2, which sails from and to Bangkok (Laem Chabang) starting in November. ALthough the English website is not complete, you can nevertheless get info now.

Here is their website.

If the link for Ocean Cruises is not clickable, use this LINK to get to their homepage. Once there, the first large box on the left (blue) will have a red clickable link on the bottom of the box. That will take you to cabins, public rooms, etc,.

Hope this helps you.

Regards,
Mike--in Taipei, heading to Pattaya shortly

Thanks for the info, Mike, and have fun in Pattaya! Are you a regular there?
Guess the cruise has to wait, I've got the feeling I'm loosing my focus here...
Applicationwise I guess 'shore excursion staff' would be the position to go for. Anybody out there who can give me info on job description, how's the money, anything I might need to know?
Any comments to the questions in my second post? Which lines mentioned would you recommend (which lines do you guys work for?) and how to contact are their agents?
(Some of the websites are for guests/reservartions only, no info on jobs/employment agencies).
Thanks!
If anybody has a question concerning hotel employment in Waikiki, Hawaii, I might be able to help, worked there for seven years.

Took me a while to find my private mail box! - - -
The more I surf the net the more confused I get... The application process seemed fairly easy at first, applying directly to the cruiselines. Those "pay-fifty-bucks-and-we-do-everything-for-you-and-even- send-you-a-nice-video" sites are a sham, obviously.
Most lines have their sole agents through whom they hire, but they are sometimes difficult to find. Most websites are for potential customers planning a cruise, no info on available jobs or their agent. Applying unsolicited by email doesn't seem to be very effective; also I read that if I mail the CV in, it has to be directed to the right person, addressed by his/her name... any comments on that process?
Does anybody have the contact addresses for the cruise lines I mentioned above?
And what exactly does the 'crew staff' do all day?
- - - If you need advice on how to survive in Thailand on $500 a month, ask me!
I've got questions, I've got answers.

Well I know that princess hires 'Cruise Staff' (which is specific job title for the entertainment dept.) through their offices in Santa Clarita and you can e-mail your resume to careersatsea@princesscruises.com having said that if you're looking to get to Shore Excursions you need to apply for a front desk position which is the starting point with Princess for a career path to Shorex assistant or shorex Mgr. I can't help you much with the other lines but they do all have websites with job postings on them and contact info there.

If you have any questions about Princess or life at sea please don't hesitate, oh and I'll do my best to find out a little more about contacting but no promises I'll get results.

Cheers,
DJK
