hi all;
I'm new to this forum. I live in Canada. Here's the challenge, if anybody is up to it.
Thank God I don't have a criminal record!
However the bad news is that I have a terrible resume, with unbelievable gaps in employment. I haven't worked in years. I'm in relatively decent physical shape.
what are my chances of getting employed and WHAT do you suggested that I do. I would be willing to work on a very low level job, and if need be work the grave yard shift.
Gratefully yours,
tyll

Your decent physical shape is a good start, but I am guessing you have very few skills since you said your CV is very thin, correct?

If you don't mind labouring jobs, such as cleaning, start there. To see whether there are any positions vacant, do an online search for ship crew agencies and submit a query. Good luck.

Cheers

Thanks bulbousbow;
Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. Start at the bottom and build up.
Oh, by the way, I saw an advertisement for Handwriting Analysis. The author claimed that he taught a mini class(intro to handwriting analysis in exchange for a very cheap cruise. I think he claimed that he paid 20 U.s. a day for a 5 day cruise. He claimed that he only taught for the first evening only.
I suspect that cruiselines might be looking for something different like that. Not necessarily handwriting analysis, but something intriguing and interesting.
Definitely, gotta know your stuff.
Anyways, just a thought...
bye.

Yes, cruise lines are always looking for someone who can do lectures on interesting stuff, but you gotta know your thing. In return they get a cruise. Remember though, that everything is not given to you free. You still have to pay for your drinks, etc. I think we've discussed this before on CT. Maybe do a search under Cruise Lines and Cruise Ships or even Midships Lounge.

Why do you not try working as cruise staff? Canadians are usually hired for this position and it should pay you an average of US$2000.00 per month, based on a 6 month contract. This will allow you to experience life on board, as well as what other positions would be available to you in the future, should you decide that ships are in your crystal ball.

Cruise staff would be a good option as long as you have good people skills, are comfortable on a microphone in front of large groups, and have no shame... seriously though I've been cruise staff and it's a very fun job and they do like to hire Canadians for the position. Other alternatives are: gift shop sales clerk (retail sales is an asset), or front desk (pursers department). Both have entry level positions which start at roughly $1400 US (and both require very little experience to start). Incidentally the starting wage for cruise staff has come down in the last year or so (at least on the line I work for which shall remain nameless) so the starting pay there will likely be closer to $1500.

Hope you find this helpful and if you have any specific questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Cheers,
DJ Kevin
