Aker Yards and Viking Line signed LOI for a passenger ferry
November 21. 2005

Aker Yards and Viking Line Abp have signed a Letter of Intent for delivering a passenger ferry in January 2008. The contract value is within the range EUR 110-130 million. The agreement includes options for two similar vessels.

Aker Yards is planning to build the vessel in Finland, at its yard in Helsinki, where one vessel would give about 1,300 man years of work. In August, it was announced that the Helsinki yard would be made one of the most cost effective yards for building ferries in the industry.

"Viking Line is an old acquaintance of Aker Yards. Previous deliveries for the company include seven vessels, the latest built being MS Cinderella. We are looking forward to excellent cooperation between our two companies also in this new challenging project", says Yrjö Julin, President of Aker Finnyards and responsible for Cruise & Ferries in Aker Yards.

Viking Line is a Finnish listed company offering transport, shopping and recreation services. It owns seven vessels, the transport volume being some 5 million passengers. Turnover is ca. 380 million euro. Viking Line has a personnell of about 2,800.

Cinderella is getting on a bit now, but as had a couple of refits. Now looking very smart

from Fakta om Fartyg. There are also a number of onboard and interior photos linked from the bottom of that page.

Had a quick look around the web, but can't see any renderings of what this new vessel may look like. Too early yet I imagine. Good news anyway.

The Viking Line Chief was on record a couple of days ago as saying that Helsinki Tallin was in most need of new tonnage - he's right. The ageing Rosella looks a real mess and will look more so when yet another 2 new Tallink ferries arrive, one 48,000grt cruise ferry and one 27 or so knot fast conventional day ferry.
The price of 130m is more than Tallink are paying for the day ferry (110m) but less than the cruise ferry (165m), so she must be something in between. The interesting thing is the option for 2 more....

She looks very smart indeed, thanks for that.

Have you found any real images of Galaxy's launch & christening today? There are 3 versions of renderings around [just different hull art] but the only real pic I can find is on Tallink's website and I'm not sure if that's photoshopped or not?

Ouch! Sorry recab.. I don't seem to have received the notifications for ages, & even had to be advised a couple of weeks ago that my pm box was full, I still haven't caught up and apologies to others too, as I had msgs going back quite a while.

Silja Serenade & Symphony, I think these are lovely sisters. The interiors look great especially the cabins which are not unlike any cruise ship. I think these vessels are wasted as ferries.. well from photos, but I have never been aboard any to experience the food etc, which may not be quite the same and more ferryish? I have only seen Silja Symphony alongside at Helsinki [below in Aug 2000], and she did look smart; but as to the 'new' looks - I thought they were having a refurbish early next year? Are there some renderings about? I rpomise I will read my pm's.

Last year I crossed from Helsinki to Stockholm on Silja Serenade. She was quite a special ship, but there was a lot of wear and tear in places.

I had a grand meal in the a la carte restaurant which was very good. Personally I was that impressed with the promenade. The ship was full and it was far too crowded.

I ahd a Silja Class promenade faced cabin which was really enjoyable.

I crossed on the Serenade, which was something special back in 1999 when I did it. Superb food and a real wow factor from the promenade. However they have since suffered from Sea Containers typical shipping philosophy - i.e. all talk no action. An investment by them is like having an appointment made for your company by the grim reaper....

As for this new Viking Line ferry. Interesting are the 2 options - not needed for this route. Also check out the pic and the dimensions. Spot the difference between that, and the new Tallink ship - not very much. Same size, speed, route...

in the 1st photo of *Viking Cinderella*, why does she have a mini mast on her bow instead of a normal flag staff??? and does this mini mast actually serve a function????

Of course the "mini mast" serves a function. There is a searchlight and a radar antenna mounted on that mast.

In the winter - when there is ice - I have often seen that these ferries use their searchlights. Also, these ferries spend a lot of time near the coast or between small islands - so they use this this additional radar - which is usually retractable on most cruise ships - nearly all the time. Nevertheless, this mast certainly is also a desing feature - it could also be a bit less ostentatiouse.
