Aker Yards delivered TallinkŽs big cruise ferry
April 18, 2006

Today (April 18, 2006), the cruise ferry "GALAXY" was delivered to Tallink from Aker Yards shipyard in Rauma. The contract worth 165 million Euro was signed in October 2004. The vessel will start cruises from Helsinki to Tallinn.

The vessel is one of the biggest cruise ferries in the Baltic Sea, having capacity for 2,800 passengers. The guiding principle in designing the vessel is paying attention to the comfort and luxury of present-day passengers. The use of high-tech solutions onboard is maximal.

927 cabins, several restaurants and places to entertain of various style and class as well as a remarkable conference centre with over 450 seats make the new ship a multi functional sea-based hotel with excellent ambience.

The vessel will start regular cruises between Helsinki and Tallinn. On that route now, the cruise ferry "ROMANTIKA", delivered from Aker Yards in spring 2002, will start cruising between Stockholm and Tallinn together with the sister ship "VICTORIA", built in Rauma in 2004.

In addition to the "GALAXY", Tallink has ordered from Aker Yards a sister vessel for the big cruise ferry for delivery in summer 2008 as well as a fast passenger day ferry for delivery in spring 2007.

MS GALAXY is designed to carry passengers, private cars and freight units, and has 1,130 lanemetres, i.e. over a kilometre of vehicle deck space. The vessel has a length of 212 metres, a beam of 29 metres and a gross tonnage of 48,300. Propulsion by four diesel engines totalling 26,240 kW will provide a service speed of 22 knots. Classification of the vessel is to the highest ice-class - 1 A Super. The catalytic reduction units to be installed for better control of exhaust emissions will make the vessel most environmentally friendly.

I would try faktaomfartyg.com. It is the swedish bible when it comes to ferries. Go through the alphabetical listing of ships or companies and you will find it. I'd be surprised if there weren't interior pics soon after she enters service. But if previous Tallink newbuilds are anything to go by, expect a lot of glitz.

The FoF page is here. There are a few pics. She looks a cross between a Dairylea Cheese packet and a yoghourt pot

Is this for camouflage? Do they want to hide her? I would not be surprised if a helicopter crashes into this ship....
I have certainly nothing against children - also nothing against chidren aboard ships - but they should not allow the to paint the ship!

The blue is far too dark. The original rendering was pale baby blue with a white funnel, see here, which looks a lot better.

I agree with PamM

I am asking why this horrible blue.It disturds the good design of the ferry.

The paint job is a gimmick yes, but helicopters crashing into her, come on! The penguins were a nice idea, but they are natives of the south polar regions not the Baltic, same as the African animals. Maybe polar bears and rein deer would have been a better proposition. Go figure!

She would have been a very good looking ferry without this "superstructure art". I think it's really, really, really, tacky. I just hope other lines won't follow Tallink example.

oh, come on you guys...

are you really so conservative? Most of you seems to think that only real ships are those black-hulled old liners from thirties. This is cruise forum and we discuss about modern cruise ships. this is 2006 not 1906 Modern times needs modern ships...

I love modern ferries and cruise ships and like the idea that shippinglines also have fresh ideas. quite many in Finland likes that desing. but i quess we have bit less conservative that people in US

There's nothing wrong with this good looking ferry, maybe just that the blue sky and clouds is a bit too much. If the people of the Baltic like her, then they've got it right.

I would imagine if she was here in Australia she'd be painted in aboriginal earthy colours and have kangaroos, emus, goannas and maybe even a koala or two. That would be a sight to see!

I think it's OK. I think we will see a lot more of this on cruise ships in the years to come. NCL is certainly going this way. Who knows? In a few years many current color schemes like HAL, P&O, and even Carnival might seem old fashioned.

The interiors look quite good. It's much better and much more tasty than some Farcus works.
Too bad the exterior paint scheme is so ugly.

Those interiors are very much more upmarket and calm than the other recent builds Romantika and Victoria I - however they must only be a few of the spaces, wonder what the rest is like.
