Being half-term last week, I took the opportunity to fit in another crossing to Calais. Carefully laid plans to book the ferries I have not sailed went to waste as Pride of Calais was withdrawn from service earlier in the week due to major thruster? problems and sent to dry dock at H&W for repair.

Our 7.30am sailing on Pride of Burgundy was cancelled, becoming the 8:25 on Pride of Dover.. bummer [we could also have had another hour in bed instead of leaving home at 03:45] ... guess what, she was also the vessel we got to come back on.. Grrrrrrr. Everytime I take care to book specific ferries [and this was only the day before] they get messed up. Anyway.. the weather was glorious, if not a bit cold and windy, and I took plenty of photos:-

A gallery is here, and many more indexed here.

How very lucky you are. It appears to be about 2 hours from Cambridge to Dover? How cool it would be to jump in the car and 2 hours later be crossing the English Channel! What do you do once in Calais? It akes about 5 hours to cross?

The states really dont have these kind of opportunities unless you count the ferries in Seattle or Alaska. But most of use dont live 2 hours from Seattle either.

Even so, crossing the English Channel, though taken for granted by those who get to do it often, would be as good as taking a Caribbean cruise to me.

Yes we are lucky.. far enough away not to become blasé, yet near enough to enjoy a day out. It's about 2hrs 15 mins from where I am to Dover with a clear run... yet with evening traffic it can take up to, even over, 3 - 4 hrs to get home

The crossing is only 1hr 15 or 20 mins, a bit too short for more than a coffee and something to eat, but enjoyable all the same. [The Chunnel only takes 35/40 mins, but you don't get to see the ships!]. Ships are often everywhere as you make your way across the shipping lanes. There are always many vessels in sight, but not always close enough for a decent photo.

In Calais.. oh there is plenty to do to spend a few hours. The Coastal road is a treat, with glorious views of the shipping, and countryside, cliffs etc one could never tire. Then there is the shopping, half price for us Brits. Fill up with cheaper petrol too whilst there. I have never actually had the time to explore the main town of Calais, but looks lovely.. I always tend to take others who don't want to do much other than shop On this trip I had my mother, who needed to stock up on [shh] washing powder.. my son and a friend of his [who was so excited about going on a ferry having only been on one before], who wanted to buy some sports gear. After we had seen to that, and having the time there cut by an hour, we could only stop for a quick Expresso. Next time I have told them I will be going alone, other people are a nuisance.. LOL... well the price is cheap, and costs no more for 1 or 6 in the car.

Sometimes the UK newspapers do a deal for foot passengers where you can go to Calais (off peak, mid week) for £1.

She and her sister Berlioz are both nice ships. Berlioz has the more interesting story since SeaFrance needed a sister but the Aker order book coulnd't deliver. They went to Chantiers and ordered Berlioz as a near identical sister and then Aker took over Chantiers so they are both Akers ships. You can tell them apart by the Bridge windows. The struts are black on the B, white on the Rodin.

Bits of their design were pinched for the Maersk ships also shown, notably that side 2 deck high atrium like space.

They will also have 2 near sisters with Viking Line and Tallink ordering newbuilds (Tallink Star, Viking unnamed) based on the design for the Helsinki - Tallinn service.

Lovely pics Pam. Lets see some good Norway ones next?!

There are plenty of trains from London [Victoria/Charing Cross] to Dover Priory and a 30 min walk or 5 mins and £5+ in a taxi to the ferry terminal, but for the Normandy beaches you need to go from Portsmouth to Caen preferably or Cherbourg, a longer sailing. Even then you would need transport to get to the beaches. There are some good maps here to get your bearings.

Pam,

what a lovely day you had!
I love crossing from Dover because of the photo opportunities.
As you rightly say other people can be a real nuisance, but if the ferry have a nice cafeteria, you can leave them there whilst you shoot ships from the decks!
BTW, there is no service to Cherbourg at present from either Poole or Portsmouth until 26 february and 02 april respectively.
BF has finally released its £15 offer for 2 (day return) with £25 extra for car.
Can't wait for the catamaran service to spend a day in Cherbourg!
