A preliminary agreement has been sign between STX Finland and Viking Line for an envirnmentally friendly cruise ferry, possibly using LNG as the fuel.

A very smart looking vessel. Rendering here.

Main report at STX Europe.
This is all subject to various things, including environmental grants from Finland, but hope this all goes ahead, and the sister ship.

Im living in Sweden and have done a lot of cruises between Stockholm and Turku. This is great news for us ship lovers here in Scandinavia. With the current figures she will be as big as Silja Lines Symphony and Serenade.

Yes! I'm surprised that you are so fast or you have been monitoring this long allmoust year long debate between VikingLine and STX.

It sure is a good thing for shipyard in Turku where jobs are been terminated for moust of us at friday this week when AOTS is leaving for caribbean.

Many 'here' have been monitoring this closely and are compassionate with you and your colleagues. Fingers crossed that this works out fine.
An LNG fueled passenger ship would be very, very cool.

I'm a bit surprised that they select the cruise/ferry concept to Turku-Stockholm route. Even more surprised that the ship is so big. I guess the ship is smaller than what they originally planned. They have themselves stated that cruising on these water with car farriers are not the thing anymore.

This ship model would suite better Helsinki routes and Im am not sure would Stockholm be the right direction of should they head to St. Petersburg? Hmm... ship running with gas might be smarter to be fueled in Russia. of course Turku-Stockholm is smart for cargo route but is that ship best for that purposes?

Thanks Ernst!

I sure this consept is just right for Turku - Stockhol route there is about 500,000 potensial pax in that area and ships Viking operates now was out of date allready 10 years ago. Silja (TallinkSilja) 's new Galaxy is not really a masterpeace meyi of people don't like it (me included) it is cheap and old style ship like from '80 or something. I'm sure innovative ship will pays back very soon (Oasis for example)

It's not impossible that after renewing turku route helsinki will follow and maybe even with bigger ships...

Aker builder the news report was quick to shoot around the web this morning, appearing in a number of forums and news sites. The shipyards must be kept alive, lose the expertise and it's almost impossible to get going again

It must be very difficult for all involved with working on such projects as Oasis and Allure to then suddenly find oneself at a loose end. Fingers crossed this all goes ahead for many reasons

Aker Builder: I really hope your yard gets this deal (and a sistership too)! I understand the yard is being mothballed until the work on the (possible) Viking Line ship starts sometime next year. Best of luck in the meantime and many thanks for extensive contributions!

In finnish press is strong rumours that VikingLine will anounce the new ship order jet before christmas, thats next week. The company say's they have a LNG supplier in sweden and looks like they are gonna get the environmental support from finnish goverment, so it all looks green for now.
And possible RCI order early next year... lets hope it will be those 7 ship, new class replacing vision class, wow we have something to hope for, maybe its gonna be christmas this year after all.

Merry upcoming Christmas to you all!

The agreement has been signed

"STX Finland Oy and Viking Line ABP have signed an agreement for the construction of an environmentally friendly, new generation cruise ferry for Viking Line. The agreement includes an option for a sister ship. The contract price is about 240 million euros. The ship will be built at Turku shipyard and will be delivered to Viking Line at the beginning of 2013. The signed agreement represents approximately 2600 man-years employment.".. see above link for more.

Excellent news, it will be an interesting vessel.
[I can only find an empty folder for the project in the download centre, maybe someone else can find the picture please they are referring to].

Has a definite decision on the use of LNG been made yet?

Yes it was a requirement of environmental support from the state. But those engines can run allso on heavy oil.

Thanks for the nice graphics.
So, will the new TUI ship also run on LNG?

No, TUI is normal 'conventional' ship!

Some new renderings from Viking Line:
