Hello everybody!
I´ve made two videos from the public transports in the archipelago operated by Waxholmsbolaget.
In the winter the traffic is reduced but the islands still have daily communications.

The first is from m/s Vindöga (a rather ugly ship - but she is a good icebreaker) recorded in March 2010:

The second is from m/s Ramsö in January 2011 (recorded by my brother, who happens to be the captain at the first video).

Excellent, enjoyed that thanks So they 'flash' each other when passing as per in a car?

Is it only once a day they cover the route? Most of the ice seemed to have been broken by other vessels fairly recently, but near the beginning is one section where I thought you were going to turn to port and didn't, ploughing straight into ice that didn't look like it had been through for a while. How long does it take for the ice to go back together in that temperature?

It looks pretty precarious boarding in some of that snow, hope no-one slips up.

Pam
{I can't get the 2nd one to play more than 50% at present, will try again later}

Nice videos! For sure I'd like to visit that area using the same means of transportation, both in winter and in summer.

That may look trivial or obvious, but in the RAMSÖ video, I'm amazed by the skill of the crew man for throwing the mooring rope. Sure he's accostumed to do that, but it seems he's able to catch the bollard everytime at his first try.

Thanks for sharing Jepp.

Thanks all!
Yes, the motorships says ”hello” with their lights. The steamships uses their whistles :-)
Most islands have one or two connection per day in the winter, but some have five or more some days (and considerably more in the summertime).

In the winter only a few boats departs from Stockholm. Usually you have to start your journey travelling by bus and then change to boat .

In the Vindöga-video the icebreaking in the beginning was a strategic move during a trip Stavsnäs-Sollenkroka (two bus-to-boat-switching-points) without passengers to make the return to Stavsnäs, a few hours later, faster to catch the next departure time. You can see how the speed (FOG at the gps) is 3 knots in the ice and 11 knots otherwise.

Speaking of throwing the mooring rope, I am rather amazed myself; I have seen them miss, but it doesn´t happens often.

In the summer there are far more ships in service and a few of them are steamers:

In this video you can see a "fast" journey from the archipelago to Stockholm with several stops at islands between:

Thanks for sharing the link to that nice video.

Since this thread was started I added some video clips to my webpage that were filmed in the Stockholm Archipelago - I may take this opportunity to share them here too:

Navigating the Stockholm Archipelago aboard Birka Stockholm (ex Birka Paradise)

Navigating the Stockholm Archipelago at night aboard Birger Jarl

Leaving Stockholm aboard Viking Grace
