Brad buys $325m boat

April 12, 2007 - 10:05AM

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are treating themselves to an Italian luxury yacht fitted with a swimming pool, a heliport and a submarine.

The yacht will be built in the shipyard of Civitavecchia, a port town north of Rome, by luxury shipbuilder Privilege Yard SpA, which said on Wednesday that the couple had commissioned an 85-metre-long yacht for $325 million.

Delivery is set for July 2009.

The passenger cabin will include two 300-square-metre apartments, plus two guest suites of 150 square metres each.

Other features include a swimming pool, a heliport, speedboats and a small submarine that will allow guests to explore the sea up to a depth of 300 metres.

How on earth does $325 million buy you only an 85 meter long yacht?? Are they making it with crystals or something!?!

This yacht will have some very fancy 'bells & whistles.' I suspect that the mini submarine alone could account for a huge portion of the cost. Plus, this is a custom designed one-off vessel, which adds to the tab. And lastly, the Dollar/Euro exchange rate is not very favorable to Americans at the moment, which also drives up the cost in USD.

The yachts can be somewhat like Pelorus or Octopus. The shipyard is not very recognized in the yacht-building scene so I don't know why that price that would fit a Lurssen built yacht like the previously named ones. For the one's who don't know much about yachts here are the pictures of Octopus and Pelorus. Octopus belongs to Paul Allen and has two heli-pads, a hangar for the helicopter and it's own submarine plus everything you can find on a cruise ship, but on a yacht.

And this is Pelorus, my personal favorite, which is about the size of the yachts ordered by Brad and Angelina.

Personally i like Octopus the best out of all i have seen it is different looking from the outside and i like the blue. I was out on the boat a while back and passed by it at Mayport here in Jacksonville it was gigantic plus it has a 35 ft. fishing boat and a little 25 ft. bow rider it was amazing looking.

As I recall, Celebrity Mercury was delivered for 375$ million, Vision of the Seas, $280 million, so wow a yacht for 325. Well I hope it looks good, personally the Platinum is very plain.

Well other reports I have seen place the number at 70M pounds or 190M NZD, which comes to like 138M USD. Not sure where the SMH got the 325M AUD price, which is like 268M USD. I am not sure that they are actually wealthy enough to afford 268M, or even 138M USD. That is really alot, and they only make on average 20M USD a picture I think.

And we complain about some of the cruise pricing. LOL Even Bill Gates doesn't go for all the expensive toys. It was only a few years ago he bought a corporate jet for Microsoft.

Funny enough, I was just reading last night about Paul Allen taking Octopus around Antarctica in February. rather a lot of money's worth to risk in the icebergs. Eric

325 Millions $ seems pretty excessive. You can easily build a 50000 or 60000 grt cruise ship for that cost, even with the €/$ rate. More over, I'm not sure if Pitt and Jolie could actually afford it (they are rich, but not that much, or it means they would spend at least half of their wealth to build this yacht). And you can have very nice and brand new 50 meters boats for "only" 30 Millions. I can't imagine a 85 meters costing more than 10 times that amount. Are you sure it's not 125 Millions instead of 325 ?

Is this a publicity stunt? I doubt that they would invest that kind of money (or even if they have that knd of money) on a yacht. Oprah Winfrey is far richer (1.5 billion) than both of them combined and she leases a yacht if needed. She does however have a Boeing 737 on order to replace her much smaller private jet which she uses to travel between her studios in Chicago and home in Montecito, California.

Maybe they can afford to build the yacht, maintaining it will be the problem. Many hollywood stars just charter yachts, the most famous is the Onassis Christina O, I haven't heard of any actors buying a megayacht this big.

Ecstasea is more the size we are looking at and she cost reportedly around US$72m a couple of years back [maybe 3 now]. I don't think she has a sub?, so add a bit more and take into account the exchange rate fluctuation & price rises, perhaps the costs stated in the reports are a bit out.

For that price you could have the France as a yacht.

That must be some yacht.
But what waste of money. These people that get rich because the public is for some strange reason obsessed with them, do they do any good with the money? Do they build town in africa(that kind of money could do alot there) No. They go an buy the most expensive yacht they can find. Like they really need a yacht that costs more than some cruise ships.

Ectasea is Roman A's second largest yacht after pelorus. I believe she is about 272' long and she is outfitted with a turbine, she's a big fast yacht.

EVERY country seems to have their celebrities that they follow.

Soon we will be getting Brits David Beckham and his nasty looking wife here in L.A.. Since most Americans don't care for soccer I don't understand the excitement.

They are in the market for a cozy little house here in L.A. in the $20-30 million dollar range.

By the way, Oprah Winfrey spent $40 million on a school in Africa last year and of course Bill Gates and Warren Bufffet give away billions every year through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation so all is not bad. Now we need to get the newest 2nd richest man in the World (Mexico's Carlos Slim) to loosen the purse strings but apparently charity is not his thing.

Nobody wants the FRANCE. Nobody. If they did she wouldnt be stuck in the mud in India rotting and rusting away. She wouldnt have been sitting around for the last 3 years. She is where she belongs. On a beach getting ready to get cut up for scrap. Get past it.

Private citizens have the right to do with their money whatever they choose to do as long as its no breaking the law. Its their money, not yours.

No loving couple wants to be stuck on an oversized 1,000-ft cruise ship alone. If they wanted to charter a 50-60,000 ton cruise ship they could have. They wanted the intimacy, privacy, and convenience a private yacht can offer.

Several reports I have read indicate the true cost of the yacht to be around $140 million dollars.

Correction: nobody with the money to do something about it, wants the France.

Secondly while people are starving in Africa, and other places of the world, two overpaid idiots are buying what is probably the worlds most expensive yacht, so they can sail around on it a couple months a year untill they get bored with it.

And also I am not saying somone would want a 1,000 + ft ship as a yacht(well except for me) I'm just saying it as a comparison.

I still don't believe this story. This couple does not seem the type that would need such an expensive over-the-top yacht. I had spoken w/a friend in the entertainment business a few weeks ago who has worked w/them on a few projects and he told me their personal life is very difficult. They are literally forced to stay home much of the time while in L.A. (or anywhere in the World they visit) as the paparazzi are always hunting them down. Can any of us imagine not being able to leave your home to go shopping or to a friend's while paparazzi are hiding behind every bush (or chasing your car) trying to get that special photo?

A yacht may be the only place they can be that will offer some real privacy but I don't believe it would help their image and Angelina Jolie's charitable work w/UNICEF if they ordered such an expensive ship. They most likely would lease one as there are plenty available.

His interesting waterfront home in Seattle seems to be his biggest toy but then again he lives there.

Even #2 richest Warren Buffet lives in the same modest home in Nebraska. He even drives a older model GM car-nothing flashy except the $50 plus billion dollars he is giving away everyday to charity. He won't even help his children or relatives w/money believing that they should earn their own.
