From MSN:

American households are substantially poorer -- and a whole lot thriftier -- than they were when the recession started. Many families are cutting expenses that once seemed hardly worth quibbling over. They're avoiding ATM fees, nixing "extravagances" such as delivery charges and declining to pay extra for more-convenient parking at ballgames and other events.

MSN Money readers have sounded off on our message boards about the things they now go out of their way to avoid paying for. Click through the slide show to see what the top 15 are.

I quit going to Starbucks last year. I make my own Frappaccino style drinks at home for 1/10th the cost. I buy Caffe d'Amore drink mixes on line (their Green Tea frap mix is rich and delicious-much better than Starbucks) and save a bundle

Fortunately for me I do not drink(booze) tea or coffee. I also never smoked.
These are some other things that are pricey.
I do drink pop which is getting more expensive lately. I heard sugar prices are going up.
Most of the US sugar comes from Central America now. C&H has moved out of Hawaii. Now they are growing Macadamia nut trees. Yummy but these nuts are also $$.

I agree with Desirod - especially re celebrity drink prices (and RCCL) but I would like to say that the fairest and least rip-offy cruise line in the world is Fred. Olsen. The price of drinks, the tipping guidelines, the wine prices and the sometimes cheap and often complimentary shuttle buses are all terrific. And, of course, Balmoral is the loveliest cruise ship in the world.

I'll jump on this bandwagon. Not as steep as $550, but my monthly cable & internet package runs $165, and my 2-line cell phone service w/broadband internet is $130. As much as I don't get to watch TV at home I still like having all 300 channels to surf through on my days off as I am simultaneously browsing the internet and calling my family.

Man, I need a life....
