Never did care for Five Guys (burger or fries).
Ernie
The SoCal business is still privately owned (no franchises) by the young granddaughter of the founders! Talk about one wealthy girl

Yup, I know. I'm glad it's still privately owned. No pesky stock holders pressuring you to reduce quality to increase profits! I'm not too keen on the Bible passages underneath all the cups, but I can live with it.
I forgot I love Johnny Rockets too. They come in second for me, tied with Sonic. Not the Johnny Rockets found on ships, because I've found it's a totally different product (both in quality and preparation).

I've had Fuddruckers before and it was very good, there are just not too many of them to be found.

Is that a lesbian hangout?
I think it's ok that the ownership puts the Bible verses on the bottom of the cups, hey if you don't appreciate it don't read them. They are just establishing that they are a Christian family, and they run their business based on their values.
We have Five Guys here in Minneapolis, and they are ok, but don't compare to In-N-Out

They have without a doubt the best hot dogs, onion rings, and of course an order would not be completed without a Jumbo FO (frosted orange). What's even more fun is the atmosphere and hearing, "whadll ya hav, whadll ya hav". Anyone else been there?
OMG you just had to bring up The Varsity! I have been eating there for decades, my parents first took me there when I was a little bitty kid (I'm 51 now). I have even taken vacations when I lived in NC back down to Atlanta just so I could eat again at The Varsity. If nothing else The Varsity is an 'experience'. LOVE the onion rings and the simple but delicious chili dogs. Mmmmm.....

I always crave the #2 combo (cheeseburger w/extra spread and pickles, fries and an 'Arnold Palmer' (ice tea and lemonade-the real kind not 7-up ) when I see the In-N-Out right near the north runway at LAX!

I don't anymore.

Lived in ATL for 11 years, and ate at the Varsity once. It gave me the worse indigestion I've ever had ... and the rudest service to go with it!
I guess I never got the appeal of The Varsity, but people love it.
We do have Portillo's -Italian beef sandwiches also the Chicago Style hotdog:Vienna hotdog, mustard, relish, onion, pickle, and hot peppers. NEVER PUT CATSUP on a Chicago hotdog!!!!
Frosty 4

Don't forget the poppy seed bun and celery salt! Chicago hot dogs (dawgs) are a whole different 'breed'. I took a vacation to Chicago a few years back and made sure I stopped in at the iconic SUPERDAWG drive-in having been featured on the Travel Channel as well as the Food Network. There is also something special about the relish, which is a brighter green than standard sweet relish. And you're correct about NO catsup on a Chicago dog, that's blasphemy!
Charlotte NC has a restaurant downtown called Matt's Chicago Dogs; I would take Amtrak down from Salisbury once a month just to eat there. Mmmm, good stuff!
Love me some hot dogs!

No doubt. If you want the real deal, go to Hot Doug's. On Fridays and Saturdays they have duck fat fries, something you need to do once.
For uncased meats, go to Kuma's Corner-- and block out at least two hours, because they are slow but easily worth it. They elevate Chicago burgers to a culinary art form. It helps a great deal if you have at least an ironic appreciation of heavy metal music to appreciate the gestalt of this place. If not, it's still easy to unironically appreciate the well-above-average draft beer selection.
We used to have Taste Haste Dog.(and they meant it) where it was a vegetable garden on the dog or hamburger. A really MONSTER. It had everything!!
I have never had a NY dog . They put sauerkraut on theirs.Chili dogs also are popular.
I remember going to CA. and their dogs were bad as it was just a dog on a plain bun and you had to use packaged condiments. Nasty.
We also have Chicago style pizza. I prefer thin crust. But pan pizza (deep dish) is very popular.
Gyros --- YUMMY!!!Easy onions, sauce on the side.

Are we the only ones that get that?
Chicago and New York constantly have 'pizza wars' over whose is best. I have never had the thick pie version of a Chicago-style pizza but it looks great. I don't care for a lot of fast food style pizzas like Little Caesar's or Papa Johns, although Dominos has taken a huge jump forward in taste.
Ernie, sorry you had such a bad experience at The Varsity. It is definitely an Atlanta institution. I love the chaos at the order counter!
Nathan, I agree, once you've had a What-a-burger you never forget. Their hamburgers remind me of an early 70's drive-in root beer joint I used to hit when I was a young teen in Mississippi.

You are brave to admit that! Most people love to criticize how bad and evil McDonald's is, but the fact is that it is the most popular and profitable restaurant in the world! Obviously people must like it, although few seem to admit to ever visiting one! LOL

Lol!
In in outs is the best cheeseburger place anywhere. I feel sorry for the other states that don't have it ... (thats 1 of the things i hated about living in louisiana ) but in a way i am kind of glad it's only in california and the other west coast states.
Has anyone here ever had Busy Bees in San Pedro? That place is good!
