Just wondering: what would be people's views about the comparitive merits of cruising to the fjords, on a) a typical ex-UK 7 day cruise, eg P&O or Fred Olsen, and b) going one-way on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage?

I know that the latter doesn't stop for very long at most ports of call, but allowing for that, what do people think would be the plusses & minuses of each?

If you want a cruise with nice scenery take A.
If you want to see Norway, the scenery, way of life and people from the water take B.

On a 7 night cruise you will not get to the North Cape.
One way on the NCV you will only see half the ports during daylight. On a round trip, those visited at night are called at during the day and vice versa.

The food on NCV is limited and not cruise ship standard.. but perfectly adequate. You get little time in port, but sufficient to see most things and may get woken from your slumbers at night in port.
You only visit Geiranger northbound in the summer months.

Cruise ships may not always stay close to the coast.. you won't get the views as on NCV. NCV also provide a running commentary of all the landmarks en route. You can visit the bridge.

2 very different ways to visit Norway. Both are enjoyable. B is my choice.

Pam

I don’t know, never having done the ‘Coastal’ trip. I've done a seven day Fjord cruise, it was great. The ports are more unspoilt than Alaska. The scenery is very attractive.

However Amsterdam is sometimes included, which is a very nice city, but I would rather have had another Norwegian port having been their before.

I'd now like to go further now, to the North Cape or even Spitzburgen.

I think a small ship like Olsen’s is a nice way to do a cruise their.

P&O or Fred Olsen would not be my first choice - but in summer it's probably still the better choice.

The Hurtigruten - used to be or is - the more original expierience BUT...

...the short time in port also has the disadvantage that you have to do excursion disembarking in one port and embarking in another (..which somehow makes it more rushed than a conventional cruise - other than most people going with Hurtigruten would say...)

...the Hurtiruten ships are really cute but also VERY crowed in summer.

...the food is not as good (and not original) as one would expect for the price - not the main issue but still.

My recommendation: Summer - coventional cruise
Winter - Hurtigruten (excellent expierience!)

Bear in mind P&O & all the big ships have to go round the outside of the Islands. FO's black watch is largest ship that can get up insde passage for best scenery & they have to lower the mast to get under the bridges. the 7 night cruise concentrate on bottom end of Norway so to get the best you need to for that as well as a north Cape trip on a ship that can get up the inside passage. I have been looking at a Norwegian Fjord cruise on the Century next May. The itinerary is as follows:

Amsterdam(Rotterdam),Holland Boarding Depart 5:00 PM
Day 2 At Sea
Day 3 Oslo, Norway Docked Arrive 7:00 AM Depart 3:00 PM
Day 4 Stavanger, Norway Docked Arrive 9:00 AM Depart 4:00 PM
Day 5 Flam, Norway Docked Arrive 7:30 AM Depart 6:00 PM
Day 6 Alesund, Norway Docked Arrive 8:00 AM Depart 6:00 PM
Day 7 Bergen, Norway Docked Arrive 8:00 AM Depart 5:00 PM
Day 8 At Sea
Day 9 Amsterdam(Rotterdam),Holland Departure Arrive 5:00 AM

Would there be any fjord cruising time in the itinerary? I see that the ship does not go into Geiranger Fjord.

Any general thoughts about this cruise, or other traditional cruises during May that might be better?

Thanks for you help

Whether or not and to which extent they are doing some scenic cruising is of course not clear - but you can not avoid it - e.g. you have to go trough the Oslofjord.

Cruise with P & O, or Fred Olsen (or indeed any of the lines which visit Norway during the summer) and you'll get to see the scenery not only from the sea as you sail into and out of the fjords, but also from the land if you take an excursion.

You'll also get food and entertainment of the standard associated with each line.

Although the Hurtigruten ships also offer excursions, they are limited because the time in port is much shorter. Their food is better than adequate, but not on a par with cruise ship food in terms of variety and availability. And entertainment is even more limited.

Plus (and I'm surprised "£100-a-day Malcolm" hasn't mentioned this) Hurtigruten voyages are much more expensive.

There is a nice article in the current Ships Monthly about the Hurtigruten.

Patsy.. all the cruiselines do the same excursions. US based ships will charge more for them.

I'll stick with P&O then, Pam. Just need to compare dates and prices when the 08 itineries come out.

Tom, I nearly had a seizure when I saw the prices on their site. Winter would be better pricewise but I turn blue when it gets under a certain temperature - literally. It would also be better if flights were included in those prices. So they are definitely off my list of options.

We recently did a 14 day Crystal Serenity from Copenhagen to Dover in June/July that included the North Cape, Spitsbergen, and Geiranger, and four other stops. Excellent and expensive.

Next year we've scheduled a 22 day round trip New York, er, Brooklyn, on the Queen Mary 2 that includes a 10 day rt from Southampton. Six Norway stops are: Bergen, Alesund, Trondheim, Hellesylt/Geiranger, Flam, and Stavanger. Also, one day at le Havre. Rates are quite reasonable!

YAY - just booked a round trip on the Hurtigruten, flying from Stansted on 29/9, sailing that evening, 11 nights round trip then one night in a Bergen Hotel and fly back to Stansted. Half board on the ship. £1125, guaranteed cabin basis, single occupancy.
As they say, it pays to keep an eye on the offer!

A bit of combination with the 1976-2006 thread.

The Norvegian Fjords are among the oldest cruise destination, and the choice is immense, from mega ship, to budget classic.

I have seen departures for ships like Athena and Van Gogh, Costa Ships, Century, QE2, QM2, Albatros (nd probably sisters Black Watch and Boudicca), Maxim Gorkiy, Mona Lisa.

So you can really choose from
classic ex Transatlantic Liners like QE2 or Mona Lisa (for some ridiculous prices, Malcolm with his £100 a day would be in tears), so both in English and German

to smaller classics like Maxim Gorki(I am not sure of Marco Polo), Athena

I don't know if Van Gogh or Lili Marleen can be called classics

Modern british traditionals like P&O's various ships

British mass market Thomson Celebration

Modern american luxury like Century and Constellation, and i think also more massmarket american cruisers of RCI

and state-of-the-art Transatlantic liners like QM2

and of course the hybrid Hurtigruten

and this list is certainly not ended

Variety is immense : british, german, italian, american, norvegian ships, of all ages, sizes and types and budgets.

I'm resurrecting this thread because I've just received the November Hurtigruten Newsletter which contains information about a 7-night cruise from London Tower Bridge to Bergen, Sognefjord, Geirangerfjord and Alsefjord, on Nordkapp. The date is April 13th, and the price is given as 'from £695' (inside cabin) and £895 (outside cabin).

This looks pretty good, in fact; perhaps not as cheap as P&O or Fred Olsen, but a newer ship, and with the advantage of sailing with a Norwegian company. I could be quite tempted if I wasn't already fully-booked, cruise-wise, for next summer... The only drawback might be that date: April 13th is pretty early for a fjords cruise.

Does anyone know if cruises from London are a new thing for them, or is this in fact an annual event of which I was ignorant?

This is rather new. To my knowledge Hurtigruten ships have deviated from thier traditional route only for the Antarctica trips and for promoting their new ships. (excluding vessels which are not serving on the traditional route anymore - like the Nordsternjen) Indeed a very interesting itinerary.

Are they just selling one portion of the repositioning from Antarctica back to Norway for the summer season, perhaps?

I thought the same Globaliser, as I know there was a bit of chit chat in the forums when Nordnorge? called at Tower Bridge on her return to Norway from Antarctica this year. There were people who wanted to join the remainder of the trip but were told no.. so I automatically assumed they were going to add this in from Tom's post.

But see here. The cruise starts and ends at Tower Bridge. Visits both Geiranger and Sognefjord.. fabulous in April I would suggest? and a bargain price too.

Pam

Well, that is interesting. I'll get to see her twice in a week! (Although knowing my luck I expect that she'll probably be moored up by Belfast rather than outside my front window.)

For those interested krooze-cams is carrying webcam pics from Nordnorge & Nordkapp. Should be some interesting pictures during their Antactic season. Today Nordnorge is along side the old pier at Punta Arenas, the one we tied up to 50 years ago! Larger ships tie up to new pier some distance away. Her map is out of date though, shows her still in Norwegian fjords. Nordkapp's map would seem to be about right, off River Plate on way down. Eric

While on the Polarlys last month I noticed posters for cruises on Hurtigruten ships to the Baltic and to the Med. They are obviously deviating more than we thought, from the coastal voyage.
Observation - prices are high, but everything in Norway is expensive. The Hurtigruten is a wonderful way to see Norway. Not to cruise (though the ships are nice, they are limited) but to actually get up close, short stops but not a lot to do anyway. Food, OK. North or South - everyone I spoke to on my r/t agreed North. John
