we're trying to decide whether to take celebrity's century transatlantic 4/24/99 or msc's melody 5/3/99; (other possibilities costa victoria or rembrandt from rio seem less inviting); anyone going on the cent. or mel. transatlantic, or with good/bad experiences or other info. re either ship which you'd be willing to take the time to share, we'd greatly appreciate hearing from you; best email address if don't want to post reply here is ersatzjone@aol.com; thanks very much; ciao

Century and Melody are two totally different types of ships.
The Century is a modern ship which entered service in 1995 and is one of the nicest and most elegand Mega ships (70606 tons) in the cruise industry. Celebrity Cruises is known for having the best food, a very friendly service and excellent shows. If you like elegant surroundings, the Century will be a very good choice because they have a fair value for money. But remember, the Century is new and was not build as a transatlantic liner and might not be that stable when the sea is raw.
The Melody was originally build as Atlantic for the Greek Home Lines in 1982 and was sold in 1989 to Premier Cruise Lines and renamed StarShip Atlantic. In 1997 she was sold to MSC Mediterranean Shipping Cruises (ex. Starlauro Lines) and renamed Melody. It's now the largest ship of MSC (35143 tons). It's a good Middle-class ship offering cruises in typical Italian style so expect a warm, friendly but loud ambiance. The Melody has nice public lounges and the service is friendly.
The choice is up to your taste about comfort level and ship size.
Both lines are very good in their category.

Well we sailed on the Century last
year and had a wonderful time!
Beautiful ship, outside cabin 9125
vista deck. Had the late seating for
dinner. I wish they had an alternative
dinning option....don't get me wrong
the food and the service was great!
I adored the spa, and everything else.
They don't really have a room service
menu with anything on it, my husband
was sick one night and that was a problem getting him something to eat.
On RCI ships who now owns Celebrity
they have alternative dinning, and you
can order dinner for room service, but
they maybe stopping that.
Well.... this 2-7-99 we are going on
Costa's Victoria and cruising to
key west, cozumel, grand caymen &
ocho rios. I am very excited the ship
is new and we have an outside cabin
in a good location.
Looking forward to the Italian cruising style... still a little nervous about wearing a toga for the
last night at dinner... but I don't
think they do that in the European sailings! Will let you know how it
goes...lauri.

Hi, ersatz, Have cruised on Century two times to the Caribbean. The food and service were outstanding on both cruises. I would think that Century would be just about the ideal ship for a transatlantic. Lots and lots of public rooms and outdoor spaces; this isn't just a big girl, she's roomy! I have nothing but fond memories of time spent on that beautiful ship. As far as Melody, I know that bargains abound for that ship/itinerary, but it's a much smaller, older ship, without many of the amenities that Century offers. If you can find a quote for Century that's even in the same ballpark as Melody, snatch up ANY cabin on Century.

Ersatz,
I know the two ships.
Don't hesitate for Your transatlantic: choose
Century!
I agree totally with Patrick but if the sea is raw the best way is...the bed!
During last summer I saw Melody sailing from Genoa port (Italy)and cruising in front of my house each Sunday and be sure that with raw sea dancing is assured!
Bye! Roberto
