We're planning to go to Alaska in September on the Norwegian Wind or the Rhapsody of the Seas. My husband and I are in our 30's and this will be our first cruise. We're looking for total relaxation along with some stimulating activities thrown in here and there. Has anyone out there been on both cruise lines and can give us some food for thought? Thanks in advance.

Have been on both lines. On NCL the Norway and the Dreamward, on RCI the Splendour of the Seas. RCI's ships are beautiful -- very modern. Thought the activities and food were better on NCL. I would go with whatever has the best itinerary and prices.

Our first cruise (in '96) was on the Wind(ward), and we have also cruised on the Norway and on RCI's Grandeur and Nordic Empress.

Both lines are great for a first cruise. They are mid-priced and mid-activity (that is, not too rowdy or too sedate). RCI's ships are glitzier and mostly bigger than NCL's, which tend to be more subtle and nautical. We've found food and service to be about equal overall between the two lines -- very good in both cases. Buffet dining is better on RCI (it's never been a priority for NCL), but the Wind's three main dining rooms, plus Lebistro, make its dining experience quieter and less crowded, more like a fine restaurant and less like a banquet hall. If you choose the Wind, try to get one of the terraced dining rooms aft; they're especially nice.

I've liked the entertainment better on NCL, but not everyone agrees with that. Both do a good job in the main theaters, but I find NCL's other entertainment venues to be better utilized (though this really applies more to the Norway than the Wind).

My first cruise was a Royal Caribbean cruise, and I loved it. We found the food to be great. We were not a bit disappointed. Royal Caribbean has some beautiful ships. I hope you have a great time on your cruise.
