Is this really a problem? I was going to stuff a couple of fifths of Wild Turkey in my suitcase and call it day. I mean they don't check, do they? Surely not. But then, I start thinking, "Well, they have to check somehow because what if someone brings a bomb on board?" Do they use x-ray or anything? I refuse to pay these outrageous prices when I have plenty of good hooch at the house to bring with me. Ideas?

I have taken an interest in this issue, and have made something of a "study" of it. To the best on my knowledge, no cruise line has used the Xray scanners to impound any carry-on liquor. I agree with you that they surely must be able to see it in the bags, but apparently they wisely keep their security program separate from their bar-revenue-protection program.

Of the major lines, only Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Holland do not object to carry-on alcohol. These same three lines will also allow you to immediately pick up liquor purchased in the on-board shops (although Holland now adds a surcharge on immediate deliveries that brings it up to regular U.S. prices). The other major lines (Carnival, NCL, and Celebrity) will impound alcohol being openly brought on board, and will not allow immediate pick-up of on-board liquor purchases.

One other thing to keep in mind is mixers, if you use them. To my knowledge, no cruise line sells soft drinks or mixers on board, except by the glass. So you have to stash that in your bags, too.

to add on to what's gone before, the decent cruise lines do allow you to bring your own booze on board - they discourage serving it on deck & public places but what you do in your own cabin is your business. In regard to mixers, etc, Princess, Cunard, HAl will all send canned/bottled soda to your cabin & also setups for parties - at a charge of course, but no problems.

We mix our before dinner drinks in our cabin with stuff we bring on board. anything else we purchase i.e. the drink of the day. I like my pepsi and do bring a 6-pack on board because I feel that 1.80 a can is outrageous. On that note I object to the fact that Carnival charges for soda during dinner. I know RCCL doesn't how about the others?

In answer to Pam's question about charging for soft drinks - Celebrity charges for all sodas, at all times, even during dinner. That's all I drink, unless they happen to put out lemonade at the buffets, so it can get costly for a week of sodas in the hot sun!
