Oh come on, they aren't that bad! I've had one very nice RCCL cruise that I don't have any major complaints about. Can't ever say it was as bad as the Norway was!

To add to that train (or ship) of thought, we've been on three RCCL cruises and two NCL - INCLUDING Norway (which we loved), and have no complaints about either line. We had good service, good food, and met good people on each cruise. RCCL's ships are gorgeous. Norway is a classic. Dreamward had a few traffic problems, but loved the dining room views. Every cruise is unique in and of itself. But we've been blessed with great experiences. We hope to try a different line in 2000, and expect another great cruise.

(and we'll be back on Norway four weeks from this very moment!)

No, No, N0! You both misunderstand me. I was being critical!

I wanted to know why they are called 'Royal'. In the UK that means that a company is endorsed by Her Majesty the Queen!

...the above should have read "I was NOT being critical".

Sorry

I'll try again! Why is the Royal caribbean cruise line called 'Royal'? Any ideas?

(I'm pretty sure that it's nothing to do with our Queen!)

Doesn't Norway have a some sort of royalty as well? a king and Queen? Did you know that Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines is no longer called by this title? Their new title is: Royal Caribbean International. You may also ask why Princess named one of their ships "Royal Princess"....or the old Royal Viking Lines had "Royal" ships too. I think the basic idea in naming the cruise line was to suggest that by cruising on our ships you will be treated as if you were "Royalty". The original owners of Royal Caribbean were Norwegian. I believe the ships were even registered in Oslo, Norway, I'm not sure about now. I think the basic idea was to give the impression that a little bit of royalty combined with the Caribbean would give a sense of luxury, exclusivity and comfort. I think they did well in selecting their name.

Thanks Barry, you are probably right. In the UK, I think you must have the Queens approval to use the title 'Royal'...it is pretty rare i.e Royal Ascot (Hourse Racing) Royal Mail (mail) Royal Windsor...etc

I would tend to agree that there was (or possibly still is, I do not know for certain) royalty involved with Norway, although I also suspect that it may be little more than a marketing tool.

Norway has a long history of a Royalty going back as far back as 800AD. Norway's more recent Royal family would most likely begin with the state's unification, through the Middle Ages, and up to 1814. More important milestones are the secession from Denmark in 1814, and the dissolution of the union with Sweden in 1905. Perhaps the most important period was that following Norway's total independence in 1905. Up into recent days where in this past decade Norway their most beloved King Olav V who's passing was truly a grievous time for the entire Country of Norway.

Todays Norwegian Royal Family - King Harald V, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise. Pictured below:

Thus endeth the History lesson on Norway.

NCL is still connected to royalty, Joe - there's a royal portrait in the Norway's Club Internationale - I believe King Harald, the current King of Norway. I think I remember seeing a royal portrait on Dreamward, too, (before she was stretched but I could be wrong.

I think people will go on a cruise line
ROyal Carribbean because they do research and people think that if is called "Royal"
it must be good. Look at all the ships with Royal in their names:ROYAL PRINCESS,REGAL PRINCESS,CROWN PRINCESS,ROYAL VIKING SUN.
People expect quality if something is called
royal. Remember Royal Cruise Lines.
THey should have members of the Norwegian Royal family to launch their new ships.
