I haven't cruised in a number of years. Terrorism has become a bigger worry, so I was wondering whether Port of Miami uses metal detectors or other airport-style methods of keeping weapons and other dangerous material off the ships. For that matter, a couple months ago, there was talk on this site about Carnival and NCL searching carry on bags for liquor. Can anyone confirm or refute this rumour?

I have some security questions too.
I do not plan to wear jewelry in port, but enjoy wearing it when I am dressed up. Have past cruisers had any bad experiences with valuables kept in room safe?

Also we have extended our stay in final port for several days with HAL. Booked through the cruise line for safety issues. Is hotel security considered by the cruise lines when making these arrangements? Should I consider my personal valuables safe there as well.
(We're not talking about the Hope diamond by any stretch of the imagination)

Good for you tg_lindo. Don't wear expensive jewellery ashore - just costume. You wouldn't believe the women who get off the ship loaded with diamons rings, gold necklaces and gold hoop earings. A thief is very quick and the chains and earings could be gone in seconds. I have even mentioned this to passengers getting off the ship and they look at you as if I am crazy. On the ship is fine.
Swanny all HAL cabins have a safe, except the three older ones and if you are unsure about leaving your good things in the room, put them in a safety deposit box at the Front Office.
Regarding the hotel you are staying at, which you booked through HAL, I know that Pier 66 has safety deposit boxes available through the Front Office (I have used them). Most hotels do have safety deposit boxes so check when you arrive at the Hotel. Pier 66 has Security Guards walking around the property at all times. Have sailed on HAL for many, many years and never had any problems.
Have a wonderful time

All cruise terminals have security procedures just like Airports - tickets are checked, bags are x-rayed, and passengers pass through metal detectors.

Passengers are issued boarding passes, no unorthorised members of the public are allowed onboard ships - ever!

You are very safe.

Thank you sympatico. I should have been a little more precise. It's not Ft. Lauderdale's hotel I am concerned about. Our final port is Santiago, Chile. Do not yet have details on lodging.

I have sailed on Carnival every year for the last 5 years and have never had my carry on luggage searched for liquor or anything else. As well, I have not seen anyone else searched. I have departed from their terminals in Miami, San Juan and LA.

My biggest concern with security is not in port but on board. Carnival has added a security force on board their ships and they are very annoying. I'm am not a big partyer by any means, but myself and my traveling companion were all at some point confronted by security. As well, we observed other passangers being reprimended for doing what Carnival advertizes "HAVING FUN". They were not bothering or endangering other passanges and they were not endangering themselfs.

I have been on a cruises with large groups of teenagers and colleage kids and they were annoying other passagers and unfortunatly endagering themselfs, but the staff and crew handled these situation and in a much more diplimatic way.

Will brings up a good point, onboard security. I have read that Carnival's security force is more visible than the other cruise companies. I believe the increased visibilty is supposed to deter rude and obnoxious behavior but it could produce the reverse effect. With pro-active security guards reprimanding passengers having a good time, they run the risk losing the coveted repeat passenger.

In this sites Cruise News theres an article about Carnival obtaining the A-Pass system. This is the security sytem that Grand Princess has and many other Princess ships already have them or are still implementing them. Basically your cruise card can open your cabin door, pay for your drinks, and be used as a boarding pass. When you first board you place the card into this machine which takes a digital picture of yourself. Then everytime you re-embark at another port of call you place your card inside and your picture pops up in a screen that a crew member monitors. If you look different than the photo, then there's a problem.

Have just returned from an eleven day cruise out of Hawaii with NCL never had our bag xrayed or checked in anyway. We carried on duty free liquor to drink in our cabin, I know you are not supposed to but with the prices the cruise lines charge what do they expect.
