Being an overprotective parent I would love to see the cruise lines incorporate a pager type system or something better on the cruise ships. Trying to find your kido can be quite trying especially at nite. Maybe some already have this available.

You pushed my button on this one, we take great pride in taking our kids with us on any vacation, The Smoky Mountains, Chicago, Washington DC, Disney World, Cruising or where ever we end up. These are some of the best times we have spent together and who are you to tell anyone what to do with their kids. What if one or has a medical condition, did that cross your mind. The best I've seen is Celebrity's Mercury. They have phones all over the ship that you can pick up and call your stateroom. When my son's were in the card room , I called them and talked to them. There is also a answering machine in the room. So they can call from an area and leave you a message. I didn't see anything like this on Carnival ships. We had a rule. Leave a note where you will be and when you will be back. My son's are older, so we weren't too worried. I would keep a closer eye on younger children. When we went to the Western Caribbean. There were hundreds of kids on the ship and they were all having a great time. I'm with you. Kids are great as long as they are well behaved and polite. Just like the grown ups are expected to be

I have had children. I also hold the firm opinion that unsupervised children are making a real nuisance of themselves shipboard. This I think was her point.
To answer the original question on the location of persons there is a system available called Magellan. It operates on the Global Positioning System. By putting an electronic bug on a person, the handheld locator will point by arrows either up or down, fore or aft. By following this you can locate your rugrat fast.
As a point interest, this devise can also be used to pinpoint the location of the ship, its speed and heading. For this reason the betting on the ships daily mileage was discontinued

God help us if parents resort to Magellan to locate their rugrats on a cruise ship!
Cncservo – It’s great that you take and enjoy family vacations but I can relate to Kas and Mercy too.
If your kids are teens they should surely by now have learned some house rules - like curfew time – telling you where they are going and with whom – touching base if they are going to be late, etc. etc.- which means, of course, they have to know their parents whereabouts.
If they’re not yet teenagers , should they be out alone at night?
As for a child with a medical condition, for sure I’d be keeping close tabs – otherwise I’d be worried sick.
Most cruise lines do a wonderful job with kids programmes but I don’t believe they can be expected to provide 24 hour supervision.
Any cruise ship I’ve been on has telephones from which you can call any cabin. I was not aware that you could call a certain location and speak with a specific person – never tried it actually!
Seems to me we'd all be better off if we respected other peoples rights and thought less about our own personal preferences.

Daley, my point is:

All good parents worry about their kids! Leaving the kids at home is neither a kind or practical option for most of us. A number of 'Adventure Parks' have pager type systems, so I think a similar system for a mega-ship is an interesting idea from cncservo.

I am also hold the firm opinion that unsupervised children can cause a real nuisance, shipboard. So can some adults!

O.K. Daley you said you were confused so let's try to straighten this out.

To answer your first question, "What does Kas having no kids got to do with this subject?" Malcolm's post earlier in this topic was just a quick quip, something he is known for here. It was not meant to incite.

To answer your second question, "What bearing has ill behaved adults have to do with communication?" The adult comment wasn't to address "communications" but was in response to your post where you wrote, "I also hold the firm opinion that unsupervised children are making a real nuisance of themselves shipboard."

I have not even noticed children on the past 10 cruises because they have behaved so well. But I would suggest the $50 handheld radios for children who are old enough to use them. Of course younger children should not be wandering on their own anyway. These radios would work both ways, for the parents to find the kids and for the kids to find the parents. Usually children can expect to find their parents at home, but a cabin is not where you would expect to find anyone except when they are sleeping.

Hey folks, lets stay cool. At least MagnmPI is on my wavelength! My 'quick quip' about Kas having no kids (possibly?), was NOT a useful contribution to this debate. I just felt that maybe Kas did not fully understand the problems of being a parent - I may well be totally wrong?. Sorry Kas, It was not meant to incite.

At least we have all learned how imotive the subject of children on ships can be.

Kids can not be all lumped together as one! Some kids were very well behaved. Some were definitely NOT.There was an eight year old at one of the shows sitting in the front row. Now this was a Carnival ship, so the show girls were wearing G strings. Every time a dancer would get close he would jump out of his seat and grab her costume! His parents thought this was CUTE! No one else did, especially the dancers. On the same cruise we took videos of some adorable kids dancing to the Caribbean music. When you get a LOT of people in a small area, it is important that everyone try to keep in mind that everyone else is trying to enjoy their vacation too. I DO have kids, but I couldn't afford to go on a cruise until they were 18 and 19, so I can't say if I would have taken them before. I don't see why this is such a sensitive subject. Rude is rude if it's an adult or kids. That was my point I was TRYING to make. I hope I didn't offend anyone. DO remember that there has been instances on ships where child molesting has taken place. Keep a close eye on the kids and don't let your guard down.

Rather than an annoying paging system onboard, we use the FRS radios. We also use them in the mall, and at many other venues with large areas or crowds.

It seems that some elderly people are intimidated by youth, an answer for which I have none.

No, just an observation from the people I have seen and observed. Maybe it is inaccurate, and maybe not. When a person has trouble walking and another crosses in front of them, they falter. It is the fault of those ilmannered kids, right?

As a lover of cruises and good manners also parent of 2 teenagers I understand and empathise with the varied opinons. Our children used the phones on Celebrity as did we. Called the teenage room and used a post it note system in the cabin. There were only a dozen kids on the cruise so there presence was conspicous by the lack of numbers. All were very well behaved. If we were doing seperate activities we would always organise a meeting time. If late wait.

I guess some clarification on Magellan from a pilot who uses GPS daily might be in order, if anyone is interested. First, Magellan is a brand of GPS not a system. Second, while it is a GPS satellite receiver, it is not a transmitter, which the bug you relate to would have to be. Sorry, the military owns all the GPS satellites and won't allow anybody to transmit a signal to them. In fact, they purposely put a little inaccuracy into the civilian use system to thwart terrorists. Most are accurate to within 15 meters. When Desert Storm occurred, they turned off the jammer that caused the inaccuracy and were able to navigate to within inches, amazing!
The product eluded to must be something different.
The statement about being able to track airplanes and ETAs is true however. But the unit is only tracking it's own speed in relation to the satellites, not some kid. That's why you can walk around with one and see your ground speed, direction, etc.

My only comment on bringing unruly kids onboard, or not wanting to watch the kids you bring is to bite the bullet and pay the $8.00/hr for a babysitter.

Gordy - thanks for the clarification on Magellan. I really had no idea what it is or how it worked. Could only envision little people all over the place with 'attachments' through which they could listen and talk back. Thought it might be like the 'cellphone plague' now sweeping the land - can't have a coffee these days without overhearing several inane conversations.

My husband & I are going on the Grand Princess Jan.30th. We are taking 2-way radios to keep up with each other. I also like the idea of the post-it notes.

One reason I take cruises is to get away from pagers, beepers etc. I hear enough of that at work. I feel a paging system or beepers going off would disturb other passengers.

Gordy, concerning Daleys introduction of GPS. I look on it as a sideswipe to what he thought was the idiocy of the question. It seems to be generally agreed that kids aboard cruiseships are a pain. In most cases they are not even fare paying passengers. To cater to them in any way seems absurd.

The cruise ships do use radio communications between staff members, as to what frequency I do not know. If you can find the infomoration supplied with the radio it will probable indicate for use in the United States only!!! Let us know.
