My mind is a whirl. I need suggestions. I have never cruised before and am receiving conflicting advice. I like the unique and unusual kind of experience. I like food - itinerary is it important or not? Do you actually have time to see the islands?

No one can say enough good things about Celebrity - yet, I'm hesitant after reading travelpage.com. Maybe it is too expected, too bland, not unusual enough. Anyone have experience on Costa Romantica or Holland America? I've been told I'm too young (31) for HAL - could this be right? And not to bother with the others, because Celebrity rules. HELP. I can only leave from Fla. port cities - my new husband doesn't fly (will not fly).

Thanks Christine

Hi Christine...I’m afraid that there are no answers to your questions..just differing opinions! One mans meat is another mans poison.

I do agree that it is difficult to judge a Cruise experience before you have experienced it! Celebrity are good, but so are most of the other major cruise lines. As for Costa, this web site summed up one of their ships nicely "...if you are uncomfortable in the presence of foreigners, stay away because this welcoming ship is not specifically geared to the English speaking North American market.. However, if meeting people from other countries and cultures and making friends with people who don't live down the block is as much your style as it is mine....then by all means consider the COSTA ALLEGRA".

Cruise choice all depends what you are looking for. Do you want ‘fun’ or a more refined experience? Does the size and type of ship matter to you? Are the ports of call important or do you just want to relax and enjoy the ships facilities. Are you on a tight budget? Maybe you are a Carnival or Disney person, or maybe a Princess or Cunard? Lets not forget HAL, NCL and RCL!

As for age, I'm in the younger bracket - but I don't have a problem mixing with older people. In fact I often find them more interesting. Other people would not share my view at all.

My advice is that you read all the major brochures, buy a good guide book and check these forums. However, at the end of the day only you can decide which ship and line. Whatever you do...please do try it!

Hi Christine - I started cruising with my husband when we were in our late 40's. On our second cruise a group of young gals from RI and a young couple from Canada went everywhere with us the whole cruise and we all had a great time. I asked them why they wanted to be with us "old folks" and they said because we were so much fun. We have cruised exclusively with HAL for 18 years and love it. Have never tried other ships so I am biased. On our first cruise we had passengers from 5-90 (she was a TV actor who played the old lady on the Mary Tyler Moore show) and she had a great time. Young or old it doesn't matter. It's what you want. HAL passengers vary and yes there are older folks on board, especially the longer cruises as they have the time to cruise. I agree with Malcolm - GO, have a great time and enjoy yourself.

Hello, I'm not sure how "unique and unusual" an experience can be found in the Caribbean. To me unique and unusual would be a "soft" expedition type cruise to the Galapagos Islands. But anyways back to the Caribbean, you've got plenty to pick from.

Sounds like your choices are between three cruise lines. Between HAL and Celebrity, in my opinion, it's a toss up. Both are very good lines. Never been on either, but looking at both for next years trips. I'm 29 and I would love to cruise HAL. Malcolm's right about Costa, but that could be the unique cruise you were looking for.

We took our first cruise this year, and it was on Celebrity; and, yes, it was all they said it would be. We really enjoyed the cruise, and the food was very good--some nights were as good as a 5-star restaurant. Our service (esp in the dining room) was superb! It was an Alaskan cruise, and there were people of all ages! We are going on a Southern Caribbean cruise on the Galaxy early December. I do not believe you could go wrong on Celebrity, but having been on only one cruise line, I am not an expert! If you go with an open mind, however, I believe you will love your cruise no matter what the line!

Hi Christine,
We are taking a cruise with HAL in January. My priority was itinerary and I did not want the "Carnival" experience. Yes, I have heard that the passengers on board will be a more mature group (I am 40), BUT, people are people first, not ages. I am a graduate student and have friends in their early 20s.
Everything I have been told about HAL is sounds great. I made my choice for the following reason: I was limited to traveling in January. Wanted a "different" itinerary (have been to Carribean) and, again did not want the Party boat atmosphere! I decided on a cruise because my brain is fried from school and I do not want to HAVE TO think about ANYTHING (except maybe which entree and dessert I want to enjoy)I do want some time alone with my husband, lots of relaxation, enjoyable dinner conversation, good food, good wine...
I think you need to list your priorities, then see which line / itinerary meets your needs. Good luck!

O.K., I'm going to throw my two cents in. I have cruised Celebrity twice and Carnival twice and I won't be going on Carnival again. As far as the "Party Boat" thing. The Mercury was a lot more fun than the Carnival ships. They had a great Caribbean band, and the staff were much better at getting people up and dancing! I have heard TERRIBLE things about Costa Cruise Lines from the Cruise Opinion web site. We were considering a Costa Victoria cruise, but after reading the horrible reviews , we changed our minds.I have heard a lot of good things about Royal Caribbean, Princess and Holland America. We will be going on Celebrity or Royal Caribbean next. We haven't decided. It's only the differant itineraries that we don't know about yet. Mexican Riviera or Eastern Caribbean?? I always try to find itineraries with more stops. Some have only three stops in a 7 day period.

Well, if only to shake it up..I have to put
my oar in for the Carnival 7 nite Fantasy
class and mega-ships. Compared to NCL
and RCCL...it is not a contest anymore,
Carnival has surpassed them in most major
areas including food. You do not have to
book a suite on CCL to get a roomy cabin..
they far surpass the shoeboxes offered on
the pricier cruise-lines. Now, Celebrity and
Princess (especially Celebrity) do have a
higher level of food...Carnival is very
good banquet food with an attempt at gourmet
presentation with good service.But Celebrity
approaches 5 star with 5 star service. But
what Carnival loses in the dining room, it
gains in the nightlife. Even CCL critics
begrudgingly admit Carnival rules all others
when the sun goes down..best entertainment,
hottest casinos and discos...Carnival is
excitingly glitzy...or terribly tacky dpending on your point of view. But it is
NEVER boring..and I think it is the perfect
first time cruise. You will either A.have
trouble ever choosing any other cruise line
or B. decide you might want to try the
more sedate, more gourmet, and more expensive
cruises next time. But you will have a wonderful first cruise on Carnival. If you
don't smoke..the Paradise is considered the
ship an anti-CCLer is most likely to enjoy
because it is not garish like some other
Carnival ships...it's clientele are just a
tad more upscale..entertainment choices are
vast..Try Carnival first.

Choosing is very much a personal decision that should be discussed with a professional cruise travel agent as to fit you to the ship that best portrays what you're looking for. Each cruise line has its strong points as well as weak points but you'll find many similarities with all of them.

Many people are Carnival bashers but they didn't get to be the most popular cruise line in the world if they were doing everything wrong. Besides Carnival Corp owns Holland America, Costa, Seaborn and Cunard so think about the offerings here. The name Carnival alone should tell you it's going to be more like a party atmosphere. I agree some of the first Fantasy class vessels were a bit glitzy but their newer vessels have toned down considerably and have a more elegant look to them. But Carnival is known to be the "Fun Ships" and that they are! I personally love the Carnival experience and will be sailing them again next month on the new Triumph. As far as the amenities in the bathroom, I always bring my own shampoo anyway and I don't use a shower cap so I really don't care that they don't provide anything but soap. (I can't believe the number of people that gripe over this!)

I sailed on the Grand Princess last year and had a fantastic time. Awesome ship with a awesome disco! Shows were good but no comparison to Carnival or Norweigan. I enjoy the late night comedians which I didn't find here. Service on Princess was definately a step above her competitors.

Norweigan had some of the best entertainment throughout the week that I've seen at sea. Downside is I think their ships are rather bland looking with little or no elegance and a bit worn and tattered. Food on NCL was consistant with CCL and RCL.

Sailed on RCL Slendour of the Seas and also had a great week. Nicest ship I think I've been on as far as elegance. Older crowd, sedate and the ship was practically dead after 9:30 at night. Excellent food and the best pizza I've had at sea. Down side was no nightlife and average at best shows.

A cruise is really what YOU make it. If you go expecting 5 stars...pick a 5 star cruise line, don't pick Carnival. I typically don't eat in 5 star resturants or stay in 5 star resorts when I go (because I like to go as often as possible) so no matter what line I've gone on I go expecting a fantastic week of fun in the sun along with relaxation. Every cruise I've been on has been one of the 10 best weeks of my life!

Think about what you want and request to be matched up to your expectations.

We just got off a Celebrity cruise (Mercury) and I must say I don't see what the hoopla is all about.

Carnival is a great first cruise, actually. The food is good (and some say improving), the service is good (and not stuffy), there is plenty to do, the price is right, and the ships are visually exciting.

Our personal preference so far is Princess. However, we have had great cruises on HAL and American Hawaii, too. We had a poor cruise on HAL's Westerdam, however; I would avoid that ship at all costs. The Nieuw Amsterdam is smaller and more intimate. The big new ships, such as the Veendam, are also excellent.

See? It's all opinion, isn't it?

I agree on one thing it is what you want to make but I am going on ROTC in 14 days and I will choose what I like. For partying I can stay up all night and party with the people or I can sit in my bunk and get drunk, whatever but I am sure I am going to have good time, it is what you want to make of it. To me it is SHOWTIME!!!

christine - with a new husband in tow think I would opt for something that he's tuned into - HAL is our favourite -just returned from 10 day Mexican Riviera on HAL Statendam - our table for 10 ranged in age from 30's to mid 70's - our mid-70's couple eventually confessed (with blushes) that they were not married - when we were introducing ourselves on the first night out he said "I'm Bert and I've been told to say nothing more..." that was an ice breaker - he was a first class story teller and they we having the time of their lives - the doctor and his wife had endless jokes to tell - the 2 widows regaled us with their observations on the 'singles parties' - the 30's couple were on their first cruise and had endless questions - and then there was us (married 20+ years) - we all had a great time - we met for pre-dinner cocktails - after dinner drinks, bingo, poker games, disco and chat time on deck - a cruise is what you make it. The islands that you can 'really see' are few and far between - at best you have 6/7 hours ashore! You may say "I've been there" but you can't claim to have seen it!
Read Malcolm's comments - he knows what he's talking about - GO and enjoy!

My husband and I are in our late 20s, and have both become "cruise addicts!" Believe me...age doesn't matter at all! No matter what line you're on, you're certain to have a really great time! I've been on HAL (Noordam) and the Dawn Princess and both were very different experiences, but the 2 best vacations of my life. Both ships cater to an older clientele, but it didn't matter whatsoever. There were plenty of younger people, too. We actually had more fun on HAL (I think alot of this had to do with the cruise director and cruise staff...they did an excellent job of keeping us entertained all week long!) The Princess was alot more "sedate" at night, and the entertainment wasn't nearly as good...especially on the ship on the "at sea" days. (We're going on RCCL's new Voyager of the Seas in February, so we'll then have 3 different lines under our belts.)

I think the itineraries make a huge difference. We did a western itinerary on HAL, which gave us more time at sea, and we really loved the ports, especially the Cayman Islands! It was more relaxing, and we really enjoyed those "at sea" days! We did the Southern on the Dawn Princess, and were in a different port almost every day. One of the great things about cruising is that you're able to visit so many different islands, so you're able to get a really good idea of which islands you'd want to go back and stay on for an entire week! On a cruise, if you don't like the island, it doesn't matter, because you're off to a new one the next day!

If you're looking for real adventure, have you considered a Windjammer cruise?

Your best bet is to go to a travel agent that specializes in cruises, and let them point you to the right line. But no matter which one you choose, believe me, it will be the best vacation of your life!!!!

If your looking for something a little unique, you might want to try Premiere's Mayan American cruise. Premier is an excellent cruise line, great food and the ships while older are excellently maintained and feel more intimate
