We have booked a cabin on the ex-Nieuw Amsterdam, now the Patriot, on United States Lines (American Hawaii) for next December. It's mighty pricey, however, and I'd like to do better.

Does anyone know of a cruise to Hawaii from the U.S. next December on another line that might be more reasonable in cost, or at least return more value for the cost? The bottom cabin on the Patriot is $1849 per person, plus insurance, plus airfare. There is a $250 early-booking discount right now, but that's still mighty spendy!

Hi - How long is this cruise - what's the itinerary?
Have sailed the Nieuw Amsterdam when she was HAL ship - Alaska and Caribbean - very nice, small and easy to get around - some cabins were a bit noisy.
We’ve done two fabulous trips to Hawaii ex Los Angles on the Rotterdam V - we sure paid a lot more than $1849. They were 16 and 18 day jaunts.
Understand Premier has done a great job with her as the Rembrandt.
Have no idea how they will treat the Nieuw Amsterdam.
As I'm sure you know, there are usually some very good discounts when you book a long time ahead. .As HAL Alumni you get the advertised across-the-board discount plus the Alumni discount - worth considering.
Hope this is of some help.

The Nieuw Amsterdam will be transferred to American Hawaii, which by then will be the United States Lines. We've been on the NA before, so we're acquainted with that.

The cruise is the standard 7-day one out of and returning to Honolulu that AH has been doing for quite a while (and we did twice on the dear departed Constitution).

Can anyone recommend a good hawaiian cruise? Do they tend to be more expensive than the caribbean? What similarities do the hawaiian island and the caribbean islands have? What differences? Are there any mega ships that go to Hawaii because my family and I only like the BIG DADDIES

If you meant Dec. 2000, RCI has some Ensenada to Hawaii cruises. This cruise is on Vision of the Seas, one of my favorites, built in 1998. The brochure rate for the lowest category is $1699. but I'm sure a good travel agent can beat any brochure rate.

Hey Mifox, I love Hawaii, hence my screen name but I have not tried a cruise there. I love spending lazy days there on the island itself. But, I would love to cruise there because there are no all inclusive resorts there. So you have to pay for every meal. Shopping can be expensive though. Not many Caribbean type deals here.

RCI's Vision class ships make Hawaii runs regularly.

We've cruised to Hawaii twice with HAL. The first time on the Rotterdam V and the second on the Statendam. Loved the long sea days getting there and returning. The islands are very, very different from the Caribbean. In Kaui we even went to a shopping mall. You won't find the hawkers bothering you as you step off the dock. Beaches, flowers, food, chocolate covered madadamia nuts (to die for), Kona coffee, Hilo Hatties where you can buy your mumu or Hawaiin shirts. Then there are the excursions to see the volcanos, Canyons, etc. There is so much to see and do. Honolulu is just another American city so get out into the countryside. We were very fortunate as we have a friend who lives there and she drove us up the coast and we so many wonderful things and places. Go and have a wonderful time. I hope to get back there again soon. HAL will sail from San Diego in 2000 winter, spring and fall. Try it you'll love it.
P.S. yes it is expensive but then you don't have to take an expensive cabin and it is well worth the money.

We have done the American Hawaii cruise twice before. They have a monopoly on the "all Hawaii" cruise, so it tends to be expensive. But it is a great cruise, without a lot of the problems you see on Caribbean cruises, such as money changing, language problems, etc.

I've checked everyone out, and I can't find another cruise at that same time. This is for my wife's 50th birthday, but we cancelled our reservation because it was just going to be too expensive.
