I've been finding it won't be cost effective to travel alone on a cruise. Although not single, I have my heart set on an independant trip, but keep seeing 200% of double on all the brochures. Is there any cruise line that gives single fares a bit of a break, and would any other independant cruisers care to share their experiences with a rookie?? thx.

You can tell the cruise company that you would like to share, this way you would only pay your fare. Sometimes you will find that there was no one to share with you and will end up on your own at the single price.

I know what you mean. I now must travel on my own and really do not want to share with a stranger. Holland America charges 150% of double occupany rate on certain cabins and on the Westerdam Cat.I is 135%. I do believe they have a guaranteed share program and as Phil said sometimes you can get lucky and no one shows up to share with you. Guess if we don't want to share we will have to pay the price. Good luck.

Several Lines do have a limited number of single cabins - tried to get one on HAL's Rotterdam V1 - I was late in thinking about it and ended up paying the additional percentage - 150% I think. Was advised that you really have to book 'way ahead.

P.S. Think I goofed on this - checked a bit further and HAL brochure shows no singles - my trip was 2 years ago - things change!

Cunard's Caronia has a significant number of single cabins. In looking at the listed rates they appear to be about 25% more than the double occupancy rate for a similar class cabin. Depending upon discounts available, early booking, prior travel on Cunard etc. there may be significant discounts from the advertised rate. We just booked a cruise in August for about 1/3 off the listed fare (for double occupancy). I don't know if there is less discounting of the single cabins compared with the doubles.

The best deal I have heard is this lady on her fifth RTW 104 day cruise on QE 2. She paid US$15,000 for a inside M class share double room. But she got the room all to herself for the entire cruise, and the ship even moved away the 2nd bed from the room, and put in a small refrigerator and extra set of drawers for her. I suppose this is possible because it seems the RTW cruises are never full, usually only 1000 or so pax as against a full capacity of 1600.

It's not too bad on HAL's World Cruises, for singles who don't wish to share...nothing like having your own bathroom!

Segments can be booked in their Singles Program thus:

Cat.I thru M (inside):120%
Cat.FF,G,H (outside):130%
Cat.C,D,E,F (outside):140%
Cat.A&B (mini-suites w/verandah):160%
Cat.PS&S(penthouse & suites w/verandah)190%

I have been twice on the World Cruise this way and I always book one of the inside cabins. However, each time I was upgraded to an outside cabin by the time it came to leave.
Also, remember that on the World Cruise, your airfare and transfers(and overnight hotel if necessary) are included in the price.Personally,I find a segment on a World Cruise is worth every penny if you know how to spend it.

Even if I travel with anyone else,I always pay the single supplement so that I can have my privacy when I want it.It sure beats listening to someone snoring all night!!!
