After reading the post about RCI charging for Jonny Rockets' food and know of Princess charge extra for ice cream, I really would like to know where is the cruising expenerience head to. We go on cruise almost the same go to the exotic resorts, all inclusive. We pay more because it's more luxorious and it's resort on the sea. So we choose the cruise line, the cruise ship to go with because what they offer with their all inclusive prices. All inclusive, means everything included, right?

I can understand that they charge for cocktail and drinks, maybe it need to be imported?? Most all-inclusive resorts also include all beverage may it be alcoholic or not. However, ice cream, italian or other cuisine restaurants, why? Don't we choose the cruise line for their cuisine because they serve good cuisine beside they ALTERNATIVE CASUAL dinning? Why are passenger being charged for not eating at dinning room? I don't really appreciate the idea.

Also, the extra charges for facilities: Voyager of the Seas charges for use of Rock climbing, golf similator, skating rink, and Jazuzzi? Don't we pay MORE already becasue the ship has these facilities, now the passeager has to pay the panelty to use the extra facilities? I am very discouraged.

What do everyone think? Any voices?

I would not sail on that cruise line. Maybe they would change the policy if bookings dropped.

Dont ask me how this happened I registered as DianaD, have posted under that name and now it comes up as Phyllis. Dont understand it.
Anyhow to get to the subject, I do thoroughly agree with you. The only comment I do have is if you are getting a really good price on the cruise it is a lot cheaper than going to an all inclusive like Sandals or Superclubs. At least on the cruise you can ignore the things you have to pay extra for but there is a lot of entertainment on the ship that you would not find on a land property. You really have to drink a lot to make up the difference.

I just came across this article in our local paper and thought it was interesting:
RCL's Voyageur of the Seas boasts many unique features, such as a rock climbing wall, ice skating and in-line skating rinks and Johnny Rockets, cruisedom's first chain eatery.
But while passengers may never be bored, they may go broke as Voyageur stretches the term "all inclusive" to new lows.
While most lines charge for such "extras" as spa service, shore excursions, liquor, sodas and gambling, VOTS is dunning passengers who take advantage of the very features that have lured them on board.
The ship's ice and inline-skating rinks charge $6U.S. an hour (per person, including rentals). The rock-climbing wall is $8 for 90 minutes. An hour on the golf simulator is $25. They are even raising the price of spa services; a 60 minute massage costing $79 on any other RCL ship is $99.
Many lines charge on-board fees. Cruise industry observers urge you to keep this in mind when computing final costs of that $699 per person Caribbean cruise". When booking, inquire about extra charges.

My husband and I eagerly awaited the arrival of the Voyager of the Seas. We had planned to book a Feb. cruise on her. But when I learned of all the extra cost of so many things, it bugged me so much, we changed our minds. Thankfully there are still plenty of ships out there to choose from. I really hate the new trend and hope it will not become an industry standard. Even if you don't indulge in these new facilities. They take up space on the ship, that you can not use unless you fork out money.

I have been predicting the advent of a'la catre cruising and I think we are seeing the beginnings of it. It will not be long before you will pay extra for the dinning room as a weekly package option, or a reduction in fare if you choose not to use the dinning room, just the buffets and lido restaurants.

I have to disagree with you about "a la carte" cruising. The whole idea of cruising is BECAUSE it is ALL-INCLUSIVE. One price and that is that! Except for personal items like drinks,hair-do's,massages and the like, there is nothing extra to pay. At least, not on Holland-America.

If the cruise lines started to sell packages, like you suggest, with having to pay extra a la carte prices in the dining room, then I'm afraid there would be an almighty drop in bookings. I for one would never go on another cruise if that ever happened. As long as HAL deliver their usual all-inclusive deals, then I shall always return to them.In fact,I have 2 cruises coming up in the next 12 months on HAL. I have sailed with HAL 10 times and have been extremely satisfied with each cruise.

I'm with your Terri Lee. I've been on many cruises and the most annoying aspect in the constant attempt to get into my wallet by the cruise line. There are all kinds of ways tried now; disposable cameras in your room (several friends thought they were free!), bottled water for a fee in your cabin and in the dining room (they actually refused to serve a glass of tap water "for health concerns"-the same water their ice was made from!!), and now food. Cruise lines should look at the resort industry as the most rapidly growing sector sure seems to be all inclusive resorts. One cruise line I recently sailed had an exclusive arrangement with a soft drink I did not like; so in the next port I purchased a 24 can flat of what I usually drank and they tried to take it off me until we disembarked! Once they start charging for meals I'm going back to resorts!

This year (in Canada) there were more All Inclusive resorts in our Brochures than ever before and of course they include all alcoholic drinks. Just a thought. I really believe the cruise lines will watch carefully what people want, there is a very large inventory, getting larger each year, of cruise berths. They truly cant afford to lose passengers they have to gain more.

I don't like paying extra either. BUT! I remember several years ago an elderly gentleman was talking at the dinner table one night about how the cruise lines have changed since he first cruised. He said that almost all of the lines over the years take something away. BUT! He continued to remind everyone crusing for the money per day is a still a very cheap vacation.

I still think when you get the price of a cruise to cheap you may end sailing with rude, trashy, lower class of people. These people could care less about the fine beauty of art and enjoy destroying whatever they can get their hands on and make other passengers vacation week miserable. If you didn't read about the group of adults and their children that trashed the VISION OF THE SEAS on this thread - you should!

If I would have been the captain I'd "kicked then all off" at the first port. Parents should be held accountable for the actions of their children! All the cruise lines have to do is make their policy know and enforce it.

NOW! I got to cruise on V.O.T.S. in December and I loved the ship. At 60 years young. I don't ice skate, climb rocks, inline skate, play basket ball etc. Their didn't get any of my money but I should had fun watching. I paid for a malt at Johnney Rockets. (Nice touch if you long for the 50's - but I "ain't" paying one penny on any cruise ship for "darn" hamburger!

My wife always manages to get a 12 pack of pop on board. I have room in my suitcase for a 5th of Jack Daniel. Forget the massages. Here at home I pay $30 dollars for a one hour massage. BUT! I still visited the steam room and sauna daily!

I also learned years ago it is a waste of money to buy all of those pictures. Though we still like to have nice pictures of the ship show friends.

Even watching our money we still end up gambling a couple a hundred dollars in the casinos and my wife loves to buy jewelry.

Give me the open sea and a gorgeous cruise ship and I'm in heaven!

I am truly appalled!!!!!
If I hear one more word about the "trashy lower class of people, I will explode!" Having a lot of money, does not mean that they are nice and polite people. It is usually the opposite! The worst behavior I have ever seen was from a wealthy couple we met on board our last cruise. Just because someone is rich, it doesn't make them a better person. Grow Up!

Here Here Mercy, I'm in full agreement with you.
Billiboy
I take it that you only travel on the most expensive lines and only in the Grande Suites, you know the $10-20,000 a week per person jobs. Let's face it you wouldn't want to rub elbows with common folk. Why might I ask if you have all this class and obvoiusly according to your statement mucho dinaro do you smuggle a 12 pack of pop on board and a fifth of Jack Daniels. Classy, I doubt it, trashy perhaps.

Enjoy your time and don't belittle others or it will come home to roost.

Enjoycruising.

Some of the lines are "shooting themselves in the foot" by trying to milk passengers for items which should be included. I can understand a nearly reasonable charge for alcoholic beverages and soft drinks but I resent being charged for expresso or capuccino after dinner. As the "all-inclusiveness" of cruising gradually evaporates, so will savy travelers.

Sorry I pulled some people's chain when I used the word "low class". The point I was trying to make was the 200 some kids on the Vision of the sea sometime around Xmas who trashed the ship and made a lot of people miserable. The story is on one of these threads. I suggest everyone read it. If you can't find it I will post it again.

I have no idea the age of the kids but the story makes it clear they were out of control. Damaging paintings, throwing chairs overboard, blocking isles etc. Meantime the parents stood by watching and thought it was cute.

I have never ever heard of anything like this happening. I don't now if they were rich - poor. I don't care. The point I was trying to make is parents should be held responsible for the actions of their children.

Again I appolize for ruffling some feathers. No! I never been in a suite and never had an outside cabin with a verenda. We always book inside. I still working for a living.

I just love to cruise and I like reading this chat line to hear from fellow cruisers.

Have a nice day!

Does Royal Caribbean charge for ice cream? I am booked on Voyager at the end of this month, and have heard they have a little ice cream/yogurt shop ("Sprinkles") on the Royal Promenade...does anybody know if this is free??? Also, I've read that Royal Caribbean doesn't charge for sodas during dinner in the dining room? Is this true? (Voyager, in particular...)

It doesn't bother me that they charge for some of the activities on the ship...it keeps the crowds down. (As long as they don't go overboard!) I guarantee that if they didn't have a small fee, there would be unbearable lines for the more popular things, like in-line skating, etc... Also, our travel agent gave us a "coupon book" full of coupons so that we could do these activities for less, (and even free in some cases).

However, it does concern me that some lines are now charging extra for food...especially little things like ice cream, etc.. However, I read on another bulletin board that the reason they charge for the alternative dining rooms is to give the waiters in these restaurants a "tip." You don't have to tip your waiter in the dining room when you don't eat there, so that money goes toward a tip for the waiters in the alternative dining rooms (who aren't getting tips like the waiters in the main dining rooms. If this is true, it makes good sense, and it doesn't bother me to pay $5 to eat there. If anybody knows if this is true, let us know!

No matter what, I'll keep on cruising! I'm addicted!

On Voyager, the ice cream on the Promenade and the sodas with dinner are both free.

The $5pp charge at Portofino is a gratuity. But I don't think most people reduce the tip for the regular dining room staff even if they don't always eat there. Our waiter tole me staff rotate among the dining room, alternative dining and buffets (where they don't get tips).
