Would really appreciate any information about RCI cruises out of San Diego or LA to Mexico. Has anyone been there done that what were the ports of call like? We are considering booking later in the year. We cruised NCL in October last year were a bit disappointed thought we would return to RCI. Thanks in advance

Bluekiwi---I can't say that I've been on a Mexico cruise but I have looked into it. You can actually call Royal Caribbean at 1-800-327-6700 and speak with a reservation agent about it...or you can call that number and ask for the number to get brochures. When you order brochures, ask for the Mexico, Panama Canal, Alaska for 2000-2001. It has a wealth of information. And the two ships doing Mexico are Rhapsody of the Seas(7+ nights) and the Viking Serenade(3 & 4 nights).
Hope that helps....

I have been to the Mexican Riviera twice in as many years and wouldn't mind at all going again and again! The last cruise was on the Elation. I think the next time will be on the Rhapsody of the Seas. Very pretty ship. We drove to Vancouver B.C. to get a look at her. My favorite port was Puerto Vallarta. We went to Paradise Village. A beautiful Five Star resort on the best beach in the area. Mazatlan has the best Strawberry Margaritas and most interesting cab rides! Also the cheapest shopping. Cabo, go on the glass bottom boat tour around the rocks at Los Arcos. We did that twice and it was the highlight of the cruise both times. The water is cooler here , so I didn't want to snorkel. You actually see many tropical fish through the glass. I could go on and on. If you have any specific questions just ask!

We did the Elation this time last year, and I won't rush to do it again. There was no problem with the cruise, the air travel from the east coast is a bother. The ports were not all that interesting, we booked dayrooms at resorts in both PV and Maz., and spent the day on the beach. The shopping in Maz. is the cheapest in Mexico to our experience. I enjoyed the morining in Caob sufficiently to possibly make it a destination for a land (heaven forbid) vacation.

Hi Bluekiwi - we did the Mexican cruise x- San Diego in Nov'99 on HAL' Statendam with stops in Cabo San Lucas (tendered), Mazatlan (docked), Acapulco (docked), Zihuatenejo (tendered) and Puerto Vallarta (docked). Air temperatures ranged from 66F to 86F - humidity was high. Mexico is Mexico - interesting handicrafts available in all ports - you must haggle to get an acceptable price - Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta offer much but you are hounded by street vendors. Yes, we'd do it again - but not for a few years.

P.S. We flew Toronto to Los Angeles and endured a 3 hour bus ride to San Diego - on our return we were bussed back to Los Angeles - will not do that again! Fortunately on our outbound we had an overnight in San Diego - the return to Toronto was one v-e-r-y l-o-n-g exhausting day. Next time? we'll add an extra day to the inbound.

Thanks guys for the information it is food for thought we may look at doing the Western Caribbean instead have done the Southern. Which ever way we go it is one hell of a long flight for us from New Zealand. We love cruising but airfares make it an expensive holiday for us.

I will have to remember your point of embarkation before I complain about an airline flight!!!
How large is the cruise industry in your part of the world? What itineraries are on a regular scheduled basis?

The only regular cruise that run here are around the Pacific Islands Fiji etc, but they are only for certain periods of the year. Yes you are right I chuckle to myself when I see people complaining about $600 airfares to join their cruise it cost us about $2600 each to join our last Caribbean cruise ($1350 USD) but it was worth it. That's the price we pay for living in this lovely clean green country miles from anywhere. *S*

Yes you are right Legend of the Seas did call into Auckland but it was the one and only visit, I think they called here because we are staging the America's Cup in yacht racing at the moment. I see in their latest brochure Auckland is not included. Thanks for the thought though.

HAL's "Rotterdam" called at Aukland,N.Z.,last year on their World Cruise. That is where I joined for my segment to Bali.

In 2001,the same ship is including Aukland again on their World Cruise (February). This segment goes to Hong Kong (23 days).Don't be put off by the term "World Cruise"....the segment prices are competitive with regular cruise prices and don't forget, the airfare is included,as are transfers etc. Check it out with your travel agent. This particular segment calls at Wellington,Sydney,Cairns,Darwin,Lombok,Indonesia,Manila,Phillipines and Hong Kong.

Hope this has been of some help for you Kiwis!!!
