If at all possible, turn off your water main before leaving. When we returned from the Volendam yesterday, and opened the door, there was a very musty smell. The carpets squished! Two guys were here to midnight pulling up carpeting and setting up fans. I would hate to see this happen to anyone else.

Hi Gizmo - how'd you like the Volendam. Lucky you. We always turned off the taps to the washing machine and turned off the water heater, but never thought about the main water tap before. I leave Sat. for the Veendam and now you got me thinking. Thanks.

After my daughter read my post she phoned me and warned me not to turn off the main water supply as we live in a cold country and the pipes could freeze. Never thought of that. I had the upstairs bathroom pipes freeze this winter and luckily they did not burst as I would have been in BIG trouble. If you live in a warm climate, I guess it is OK, but think twice if winter is still on your doorstep.

Gizmo,

Will you be writing up a review of your recent trip on the Volendam? The web is in serious need of reviews of this new ship. I have read a few and am hungry for more because I leave three months from tomorrow on the Zaandam. If you will be reviewing the Volendam please post a message when it's ready telling us where to look for it.

Thanks in advance

Gizmo, your topic on water shutoff is well taken. Maybe we should change this forum to---Cruise talk and plumbing Mart.
I have a marker board in the kitchen. Before leaving on vacation it reads as follows;
tickets and passport
US money
wallet
Check all appliances "off"
Lower thermostat to 19
Shutoff water
Lock front door on leaving

Concerning shutting off the water, this has nothing to do with pipe freezing. Lowering the house temperature too much to economize on fuel is the usual culprit.

Maybe this should be a plumbing and heating forum.
topgun - your lower the temp. to 19? - I don't have it that high during the day. Burlington can't be that much colder than Toronto, or maybe I am used to a cold house!!!! I lower mine to 15-16 at night and that is what I will leave it at when I go away. The reason the pipes froze in the bathroom is that the shower pipes are on the wall of the dormer, facing east, and it was a bitterly cold night and even tho it is insulated it still froze. I should have known better, and turned the tap on to let it drip a bit, but I didn't.
Gizmo - was it maybe your water heater that sprung a leak. I know this has happened to us even when we are home and it has run all over the carpet and tiles. A real mess.
I unplug all my kitchen appliances. This year I have to do it all myself, last year had a husband to do it - hope I don't forget anything. This will be an adventure for me!!

Actually, Sympatico it is for that exact reason of pipes freezing and bursting that you want to turn off your water main in colder climates. Just make sure that you also turn off the water heater as well. If your furnace fails, that is when the pipes will freeze, not when the furnace is working properly. You said that your upstairs pipes froze during the winter. Imagine if this happened and they did burst. What a mess. Having the mains turned off will not allow your pipes to freeze but failure of the heating system and sometimes unduly cold weather will cause some pipes to freeze.

topgun....I have one more to add to your list.
A couple of cruises ago someone moved into my neighborhood with a matching code to my automatic garage door opener. My alarm was ringing and the door was going up and down like an elevator. Between my next-door friend with my house key, the alarm company and the the sheriff they were ready to check for poltergeists.
I now pull the door opener plug and slide the inside bolt shut.
All you need do is remember this when comming home.

shuting off the main alone will not keep the pipes from freezing! First shut off the water heater, shut off the main, then drain the system. Otherwise the system is still full and pressurized leaving the expanding water nowhere to expand too! Granted that with the main off if the pipes freeze, burst and then thaw you will not have a flood but still broken pipes. Most of our houses are set up to drain the system in about ten minutes. Some with just gravity others with a place to hook up an air line.

Tempature here is too warm to freeze pipes this time of the year. 70's. My toilet was the problem. The fans are still going!
Sympatico,
Have a good trip. (Weather was great last week low to mid 80's.)
Fore & Aft,
I will do a review on the Volendam soon. Will let you know when its done.

Sympatico...Have a great time. Good luck with the weather!!!! I will be going on the March 26 sailing of the Norwegian Sky!
My mother is worried about her pipes. It's still freezing at night where she lives. (Cascade Mountains, Washington State) She is getting a house sitter.
