Word leaked out of Seattle that HAL will start a big, splashy new re-branding of Holland America commencing with the inaugural of the Zaandam this May.

HAL will launch a new consumer/trade awareness campaign with new trade and consumer ads, new slogans, programs, on board activities and amenities. The jist of the campaign, I am told, is to convey the message that "it's not your Grandparent's Cruise Line" anymore.

More dining options, more late night activities, more contemporary entertainment. And you can expect to find the 70's "wonder band" SRO performing on the Zaandam. And this will just be the
start.

HAL is gunning for the baby boomer set and desperately wants to woo younger
passengers to their fleet. They'll offer a wider variety of 7 night
Caribbean cruises, and as we know, the Westerdam will launch a series of 5
and 8 night Caribbean cruises starting in January 2001.

And, I managed to sneak a peek at HAL's upcoming "Cruise 9000" series ships, the first of which is scheduled to debut in 2002. These ships WILL be HAL's most magnificent to date. HAL die hards will love them and they most certainly will help HAL attract the more contemporary passenger they're working so hard to attract right now. Dare I say it, but these ships are just as magnificent if not more so than Celebrity's "Millennium Class".

More details will be forthcoming from Holland America and as soon as I have more information I will let you know.

Regards,

--Tim

Yes, do let us know all you find out about the Zaandam. We're booked on her for August and are very anxious to hear all about this. Hopefully, these will all be positive changes and not change the "product" that we've read so much about and are looking forward to. We did a lot of research before we booked this our first cruise and have spent almost a year now reading cruise boards and cruise news. But then we're both teachers and have this idea that knowledge is power and being prepared is important. Everyone on this board has been so helpful and informative. This is our favorite source of information.

For untold thousands of us, HAL was never a ‘Grandparent's Cruise Line’. True to its brochures, HAL provides refined ambiance, pleasant décor, excellent and friendly service by the Indonesian and Filipino cruise staff, elegant dining with several entrée choices each evening, all in most pleasant surroundings; then after-dinner shows, movies, dancing, a leisurely stroll around the deck, casino, late night disco etc. etc. Daytime activities have always been many and varied - indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, sauna, exercise rooms, a usually well stocked library, card games if you are so inclined, tennis and jogging tracks. Organized events too – Shore excursions, lectures, bingo, team games – all are available.

Holland America Line ships provide what I think cruising is all about – a chance to forget everyday responsibilities; do nothing and not feel guilty; experience new places and meet new faces – all these things because YOU want to do them.

Heaven forbid that ALL Holland America Line ships try to emulate those ‘rah, rah, rah’ Lines with someone pressuring and cajoling you to join in this or that from the crack of dawn until you fall, exhausted, into bed. I think it’s probably possible to do that on a HAL ship but have no desire to prove it.

Many so called ‘baby boomers’ (50+ I guess) certainly appear to have ample disposable income but they too are coming to the realization that the flesh may be willing but the spirit (stamina) is weak. Had a long conversation with just such a couple last week – they took a 7 day cruise and went ashore only once – they checked out the ‘rah, rah, rah’ activities and late night venues but admitted that they enjoyed much more the quiet after dinner drinks and conversations with new found friends. They’re back to the grind now, well refreshed, and, presumably, aiming to make more money.

A Cruise Line’s survival depends on adapting and changing with the times – as does our own. It is to be hoped that HAL will not go overboard with its ‘wooing of the younger set’ strategy.

I doubt very much that everyone will agree with my 'take' on this but there it is.
It will be interesting to read the feed back!

Happy cruisin'

Green....

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say about HAL as they are today. Heaven forbid that they try and compete for the younger crowd. The younger crowd cannot afford to sail as many times a year as we more mature folk and I really think that HAL should cater to their constant cruisers.Maybe I am wrong in thinking this way but that's the way I feel.

After all,the younger folk have their "late-night rave" every night after llpm in the Crow's Nest.So I reckon HAL already caters to them.

I,for one, would cease to sail with HAL if they change their policies. As it sits now,I know that I can really relax and thoroughly enjoy myself on HAL.

And that's my two-pennyworth.

I agree with both Green and Terri Lee. If HAL changes too much I will not be sailing with them and will be looking elsewhere. This very thing happened to the club my husband and I used to belong to and after 44 years at the club I resigned along with many other older members. They cater to the yuppies and there was nothing there for me. Please HAL don't go overboard in your changes

Folks,

HAL is not trying to turn themselves into Carnival! HAL is in a period of evolution. There is a misconception that HAL is staid, stodgy and essentially a floating nursing home.

HAL is just trying to shake that image. They will still be catering to their die hard fans, more mature cruisers and be offering a schedule of longer cruises (ten days plus. They will still offer all of the simpler, quiet enjoyment but offer more OPTIONS to their passengers.

But HAL must do something to attract a more contemporary crowd (40-60) if they are to fill all of their new ships. What they will be doing is offering more variety and more options which is what that age group demands. They will also be updating their entertainment and offering more late night entertainment options for those who want them.

Most of the changes will take place on the seven night cruises to allow HAL to better compete with the likes of Princess, Celebrity and RCI.

HAL is commited to maintaining their high standards and provide the same, high quality, premium product. That will not change.

Don't know why I had to re-register but....

Timber...
Thanks for the clarification. I feel more at ease now. Also glad to hear that HAL will be doing more of the longer cruises(over 10 days).

Green,
As a "baby boomer", I just wanted to let you know that I agree wholeheartedly with the idea that when I go on a cruise, I want to relax and leave all the stresses behind. I want to be able to have activities to choose to do things, but I also want to be able to just sit and read a book or look at the stars. The idea of a Carnival ship as a party ship is the last place I want to go for a nice vacation. I want to be able to find quiet places as well as dance, shop, go to the shows and on excursions, etc. Hopefully Timber is right and HAL knows they have a market niche already for those of us in this category.

I'm not too sure about playing 70's music. I didn't think it was much to dance to in the 70's much less now. Hope they keep someplace for those of us into ballroom dancing. With the rage here being swing, seems like they should know that?

Terri Lee - I too had to re-register - really wondered if I had committed some real'no no' on the board - Joe set my mind at ease and all seems to be fine now.

Mary Ann - Let's just keep our fingers crossed - if Carnival/HAL does go 'overboard' with changes, the Alumni will set them straight - like they did before.

I am also a baby boomer, and I like HAL just they way it is. If I wanted the "RAH "RAH" I would use another line. I agree with everything you said.

It is about time HAL has something more exciting than plywood horse racing and piano music. I can see it now! Little Richard, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, and even ELVIS will make appearances. I would also like to see woodstock type concerts on the lido deck.

As I said in my earlier post, to each his own – it’s your vacation. I cannot, and do not have any objection to your entertainment preferences. I, and others it seems, just don’t want them on ALL HAL SHIPS.
Nothing wrong with Elvis - he had a great voice!

cncservo,starfish,geno-r,
I would not mind some of the Beach Boys, Little Richard or Elvis in the Crows Nest, but I don't think I could take Jimmy Hendricks when I am relaxing at the pool. Ever do a 50 60 cruise? You might like them. The Norway has one coming up in Sept. The Westerdam also has them a couple of times a year. Never did the Westerdam but did 3 on the Norway.
geno-r,
Be carefull of those wet tee shirts. Your wife may do more than cut off your drinks.

Yes indeed many boomer ARE grandparents but I would bet you are as lot different than YOUR grandparents. And I think that's what HAL is trying to get at.

There are many advantages in going with the older crowd. Let me name a few.
More room on the pool deck and the work out area, fewer snorklers, many of them cannot smoke or drink that much. They go to bed early. They are normally well-mannered and they are a crack up. HAL what are you thinking!

well, Ascendancy has a good point but, on the HAL cruises we have on there were times the pool was pretty empty, as some were taking naps so they would be up late. They beat you up to get in any type of game. Some were in better shape than my wife and I. We had a terriffic time

If HAL is going to have a problem filling all of its berths and must change its character to fill them, my question is "why add so many, larger ships to the line?" If you have to draw passengers from Carnival, RCI, etc. in order to fill the berths, why not go with fewer ships, a la Crystal, and maintain quiet elegance and a classic product, rather than create a hybrid line. A lot of people I know who used to cruise HAL, are going Renaissance or Orient -- as well as Crystal -- and enjoying the smaller ships without art auctions or "mosh pit" effect!

I hope Hal changes the perception but not the consistency of its ships. I was 42 when I discovered this line and fell in love with it. My mother in Law who was 80 thought it was awfully quiet and wore out the dance floor. I think Hal will keep its consistency or the alumni will straighten it out fast. The Baby boomers on board are having a good time because they didnt bring their teenagers.
The day I arrive on a Hal ship and there is no Explorer's lounge with string trios I will probably switch lines. Hal should figure out that we dont really go there for the Show Revues, but for the crew, the Lido, the extra space by the pool, the teak decks that noone else has, and the assurance of consitent good service and the no tipping required (but expected policy). The limited announcements on board etc...etc.... and the list goes on.
Arriving on a HAL ship is like arriving home.
Imagine the day the Carnival crowd becomes grandparent? I am 50 now and hope I can sail Hal for a long time to come.

P.S. My husband says to mention their Bread Pudding on the Lido is as good as mine. Who needs wet t-shirts. (We must be getting old)

Justine - from one Canadian to another, I agree about HAL - it is like "arriving home". Everything you said is so true and I am sure they will not change that much, for as you said "the alumni will scream". See you on one of those "dam" ships some day, or maybe I alread have!
